Stereoklang have had the opportunity to deep dive into the charismatic world of Polyverse Music’s latest release Filterverse. The company themselves describes it as “most powerful and musical multi-filter plug-in available today”, and indeed it is powerful. We have, over the years, tried out an extensive range of filters and Filterverse has definitely owned its place in the top league.

As a musician and music producer you are always on the quest for that unique sound, and especially so if you are into more ambient, abstract or electronic type genres. What immediately strike us is the ease-of-use as it is divided into a top navigation where you can choose your main filter categories and then a lower section where you open up the individual settings.

We think a key parameter that we believe many producers will enjoy is the fine tuning one can do on across your mix. By clicking on the tabs, you will bring forward a range of settings that will enable you to tweak your sound with precision – all the way from subtle variations to completely alter the sound palette. What strikes us most is how warm and natural many of these effects are. Many similar filters out there have quite a drastic effect on the overall sound, but here you will get a smooth transition from your original audio file to the one run through Filterverse. Another common issue with complex filters is that it will reduce the overall audio quality, sometimes with the result that one will need to reinforce the signal strength through additional processing. So far, we have not come across that issue with Filterverse, which adds to the overall experience.

There are of course a number of presets available. These do not only show you the capacity of the filter but can also act as inspiration for further exploration and fine tuning. The range of presets cover everything from glitch, bass, and ambiance to rhythmic and experimental. We believe there is definitively something for everyone to get started. But more likely the real fun will begin once you engage with the inherent sculpting and modulation capabilities of the platform. Meta Knob, sequencer/LFO, ADSR, envelope follower, randomizer, pitch detector, MIDI/CV input, and audio-rate oscillator. A key feature is the fact that your sources can have multiple destinations, and vice versa. This cross-modulation capability feels both new and inspiring when you are creating new sounds and effects. If we look specifically at the oscillator as an example of its ingenuity, we can see that oscillator module has been completely overhauled. It’s an audio-rate oscillator with a variable noise generator option, and by turning up the Audio knob you can feed back the oscillator’s audio into the effects chain. Combined with a MIDI play control and a Factor knob for the natural number multiplier of the frequency as set by the Coarse and Fine controls you can preserve the harmonic relationship with the source content.
