Music Torrent Site Oink has been busted, who´s next

October 25, 2007 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Music Torrent Site Oink has been busted, who´s next

Why did these agencies go after oink first, a torrent tracker that was hosting at least some torrents uploaded legitimately by indie labels, and one far smaller and less focused on pre-release albums than bigger trackers like mininova?

As one guy says:

OiNK was very well organized and was draconian about not allowing poorly encoded files to last very long on the tracker. The high quality of the site had to be a consideration when choosing to target it. On the larger free-for-all trackers there is no guarantee of quality… you cannot even be sure you are getting what you download. When such a site is outperforming legitimate retailers of online music in quality (not to mention empowering many independent artists) it makes more and more sense why it would be targeted.

Meanwhile, oink.cd’s homepage has been replaced with an ominous warning:

This site has been closed as a result of a criminal investigation by IFPI, BPI,
Cleveland Police and the Fiscal Investigation Unit of the Dutch Police (FIOD ECD) into
suspected illegal music distribution.

A criminal investigation continues into the identities and activities of the site’s
users.

Play with Rubik´s Cube

October 24, 2007 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Play with Rubik´s Cube

This is not all that new, some of you have probably seen this before, but I still think its worthwhile promoting again and again and again…. :-)

American/Frenchman Douglas Edric Stanley is professor of digital arts at Aix-en-Provence school of art, where he gets to build things like this sequencer controlled by a rubiks cube and there’s a playable online version. This is Douglas’ point: Most electronic instruments have a more-or-less obscure interface (lots of knobs and buttons), which can be intimidating. However, once you know what the knobs do, they’re often very simple to use, with limited possibilities. With this thing, the interface is very immediate (everyone knows how to manipulate a rubiks cube) but it’s phenomenally difficult and complicated to actually play – because every move messes up another side.

Don´t miss out on Audio Damage – Good stuff

October 23, 2007 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Don´t miss out on Audio Damage – Good stuff

Audio Damage has a couple of really nice VSTs, especially fond of their Dr.Device unit

dr_d_ss_2.gif

Dr. Device is two (two! two!) hi-octane analog-style effects in one. First in the chain is a multi-mode filter, featuring our own private reserve 4-pole lowpass, along with 5 other tasty musical modes. Then, your audio takes a trip through our true-stereo analog delay. Couple these effects with a two-node XYZ pad, motion recording, and kinetics (you have to see it to believe it) and you’ve got an effect well-suited for both live performance and studio tweaking.

Oh and by the way – this is an intriguing story…

Trust the Germans to stretch mechanical sound reproduction to the limits of sanity. Optimal Media Production’s VinylDisc features three minutes of vintage vinyl goodness on top of a standard 70 minute CD, enabling you to stage an ‘analog vs. digital’ comparison test in the comfort of your own home with only a single disc. It’s a brilliantly silly gimmick that just might entice a few members of the digital generation into dabbling with turntables. I’m OK with that.
“The VinylDisc is a combination audio CD and special record. It consists of two attached layers. The silver layer contains digital audio information, while the black upper layer can be played on every record player.

The Elegant Universe – pure electronics….

October 22, 2007 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on The Elegant Universe – pure electronics….

The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory is one of my all-time favorite books, published in 1999 which introduces string theory and provides a comprehensive though non-technical assessment of the theory and some of its shortcomings.

If you do not have time to read make sure to view the movies

Beginning with a brief consideration of classical physics, which concentrates on the major conflicts in physics, Greene establishes a historical context for string theory as a necessary means of integrating the probabilistic world of the standard model of particle physics and the deterministic Newtonian physics of the macroscopic world. Greene discusses the essential problem facing modern physics: unification of Albert Einstein’s theory of General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. Greene suggests that string theory is the solution to these two conflicting approaches. Greene frequently uses analogies and thought experiments to provide a means for the layman to come to terms with the theory which has the potential to create a unified theory of physics.

The Elegant Universe was adapted for a three hour program in three parts for television broadcast in late 2003 on the PBS series NOVA.

Free drumkit

October 19, 2007 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Free drumkit

Why not download something for free, before the weekend starts :-)

Sonicccouture has made their popular VA Brush Kit product available for free download. The 150mb Drum kit features mixable direct and ambient microphones, Drum roll emulation via the Roll Control KSP script, multiple velocity layers and articulations. The kit was recorded at Peter Gabriels Real World Studios in Bath, England.

Brush kit is available in Kontakt 2 + 3, Battery 2 + 3 format, and is taken from the larger VA Drums drum library.

Only wish I was more familiar with Kontakt…LOL
