34 Buchla Style Lopass Gate

December 31, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on 34 Buchla Style Lopass Gate

This video is an attempt to achieve the effect of the Buchla Lopass Gate. It uses a lowpass filter and a VCA in order to test the theory. The Lopass Gate is known for its natural and smooth sound. The real ones are vactrol based however so no patch like this will be exact.

A short tune I made using my derived chords trick and an impersonation patch of the Buchla Lopass Gate. I think it sounds quite nice. Hope you do too!

I’ve been intrigued by the Buchla system ever since I first saw pictures of them. Not until several years later did I get to play one. It was the old 200 at EMS studio in Stockholm Sweden. Then the new Buchla 200e series were released and a friend got a few modules. I realized I had to have some. But, as usual, things came in between. Now finally, I’m starting my Buchla journey with a very small order. This video is to celebrate!

Flash based sequencer

December 31, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Flash based sequencer

This sequencer is not using expensive bandpass filters. The oscillators are sine waves, which are frequency modulated with white noise. It may not sound inherently musical, but you can produce great hihats, bass thuds, and airy pitched noises.”

Mindless Faith remix of the Daft Punk TRON theme

December 30, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Mindless Faith remix of the Daft Punk TRON theme

US industrial act Mindless Faith have completed an unofficial remix of Daft Punk’s “The Game Has Changed” – also known as the “TRON Legacy” Theme music. This unofficial remix was done with just the trailers released online and without having the individual tracks like for a real remix. The mix is nothing less but a jewel.

Mindless Faith formed in 1995 in New York and combines the work of Jasin (vocals) and Chris Sevanick (keyboards). Following months of rehearsals and various live performances, the two-team recorded their self-produced and independently released debut album “The Silence” which hit the record stores in 1996. In 1999, Paul Green (drums) became Faith’s third element, while Corey Appleby appeared as the added element for Faith’s live concerts.

Capture the characteristics of the legendary EDP Wasp synthesizer

December 30, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Capture the characteristics of the legendary EDP Wasp synthesizer

Vespine is a free sound a Micropack from Puremagnetik that includes over 30 expertly tailored programs that fully capture the characteristic charm of the legendary EDP Wasp synthesizer. Owners of Ableton Live 8.2.1, Kontakt 3.5 or Logic 8 can load up an arsenal of sounds derived from the classic analog hardware. Get the Vespine Micropak now from http://www.puremagnetik.com/…

The Wasp is a quirky little synthesizer that, despite its toyish look, is quite capable of funky analog sounds. It really is black and yellow too, just like the insect it is named for. Probably its most distinguishing feature is the keyboard and its non-moving touch-sensitive keys. That’s right, the flat little keys are only sensitive to your electro-static touch. It’s a nifty technology for 1978, but in reality they are difficult and unreliable to play. The WASP is powered by two digital oscillators supported by analog filters, envelopes and controls. This makes it one of the earliest digital/analog hybrid synthesizers to come in such a compact package, and it sounds great! The Wasp offers flexible and traditional synthesis of cool bass, synth, and other classic monophonic sounds. Its designer, Chris Hugget, also designed the Oxford Synthesizer Company’s OSCar Synthesizer. The Wasp has been used by 808 State, Dave Holmes, Vince Clarke, WhiteHouse and Add N to (X).

Vespine comes packed with a variety of programs that fully exhibit the characteristic sound of the Electric Dream Plant’s Wasp synthesizer.

Vespine Features:

• Close to 600 hi quality 24-bit multi-samples
• Programmed with modern sampler features for voice layering & polyphony variations
• Live version includes over 30 expertly designed rack instruments
• Kontakt version includes native Kontakt effects and a custom KSP GUI for easy editing

Cool sfx collections – space, rock and creek

December 30, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Cool sfx collections – space, rock and creek

New Sound Lab is an independent sound library site created by Tor Johnson. The library features field recordings from Southern California. From nature to metropolis, Tor’s goal is to have a wide variety of high quality, usable sound packages fit for any sound designer’s collection. All releases are recorded in either 96khz or 192khz using a Sanken CSS-5 microphone and Sound Devices 702 recorder. Photos of recording locations, GPS coordinates and other meta data are included.

There are three sfx collections already available on the site:

  • Space Echo 201 ($25) – Features 75 WAV files (1.01GB) recorded from a RE-201 processor. The samples are collected from the space echo self oscillation, as well the triggered delay from various sound sources. Use these samples for the classic Space Echo sound or chop up and manipulate them for new sound creation/design.
  • Rock Slides ($25) – Includes 57 recordings (272MB) of various small rock, pebble, and other debris slides.
  • San Antonio Creek ($25) – Features 32 recordings (1.17GB) of the remote San Antonio creek located in the Angeles National Forest. The creek morphs from almost a trickle at 8,000 feet to a large waterfall below, allowing for a wide range of moving water sounds to be captured.

There’s another library coming soon, called LAX Aircraft, featuring recordings of several airplanes, such as Airbus A330, Boeing 737, 757, 747, and Bombardier 800.

Omnichord and analog waveshape performance by Lukas Ligeti on drums & glockenspiel and Miguel Frasconi on omnichord & analog waveshapers

I’m playing omnichord and analog waveshapers (see details below) with Lukas Ligeti on drums and glockenspiel.

More specifically, I’m playing an omnichord put through a Metasonix TM-1SE, into a Moog FM-102 ring-mod, into an Electro Harmonix Micro-POG, into a Pigtronics Echolution.”

Video Description:
“Ligeti & Frasconi @ The Tank.
Lukas Ligeti: drums & glockenspiel
Miguel Frasconi: omnichord & analog waveshapers.
December 8, 2010. NYC.

Transcending the boundaries of genre, Lukas Ligeti has developed a musical style that draws upon downtown New York experimentalism, contemporary classical music, jazz, electronica, and world music. Known for his non-conformity and diverse interests, Lukas creates music ranging from the through-composed to the free-improvised, often exploring polyrhythmic/polytempo structures, non-tempered tunings, and non-western elements.

While best known for his menagerie of glass musical instruments, Miguel Frasconi has long explored the sonic possibilities of electronics. Tonight he will be using a combination of devices that enable tactile control over a vast array of electronic sounds. Frasconi is the director of Ne(x)tworks, one of NYC’s leading new music ensembles, and teaches at Bard College where he directs the Bard Laptop Orchestra (BLOrk).

Granular synthesizer for iOS

December 30, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Granular synthesizer for iOS

Curtis Heavy, first Granular Synthesizer for iPhone, from app maker The Strange Agency LLC. Now there is Curtis for iPad version 2.0. The first granular synthesizer for the iPhone comes to the iPad.

Granular synthesis works by combining many tiny grains of sound from an existing recording, creating new sounds with the texture of the original, now with endless temporal possibilities. Play the sound forward, backward, or even a single point. Unlike scratching a record, pitch doesn’t depend on how quickly you move through the recording. Try with spoken word, singing, synths. Mangle your recordings or create soft, gentle textures!

This release allows you to record audio with your iPad or add your own WAV files via iTunes. No more in-app server setup; just drag-and-drop! Available at the app store at http://itunes.apple.com/us/a…

Cyber Step – the first DAW touchscreen smartbook

December 30, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Cyber Step – the first DAW touchscreen smartbook

CyberStep has introduced a first of its kind DAW touchscreen smartbook, the KDJ-ONE, featuring an advanced synthesizer, sequencer, and multitrack audio editing with ACIDized WAV support.

Built-in speakers, mic, WLAN, and lithium battery are included to let the KDJ-ONE be used as a portable and wireless handheld production environment.

The KDJ-One also features something unusual for a DAW – a vibration system, which “adds force feedback to your music creating experience”.

Check out the details below

KDJ-ONE

The KDJ-ONE features combination of multi-touch screen, keypad, and jog dial. Its runs Intel MeeGo Handset Edition as its OS, and supports all of MeeGo’s features including web browser, Skype, media player, and more. The built-in KDJ2 Synth features 10 synthesis algorithms, 20 effects, 7 filters, and 4 modulation units including step modulation.

ACID formatted samples may be loaded directly into KDJ-ONE’s audio tracks and time-stretched just as in ACID; likewise, patterns created with the KDJ-ONE may be exported directly to ACIDized WAV format.

The 6 track pattern sequencer includes automation/motion sequencing, loop recording, step recording, piano roll, and other standard sequencer features.

The KDJ-ONE also features a Unique Song Mode, which allows DJ style mixing of two patterns in real time and may be used as a VST, via built-in wireless LAN; internal settings and data are also editable from the computer.

The “QW” vibration system sends vibrations from your music directly to your fingertips, adding a new element of force feedback to your music production experience; the vibration system even works with KDJ’s built-in games.

CyberStep will be exhibiting the KDJ-ONE at 2011 NAMM Show (January 13th – 16th, 2011 Anaheim Convention Center).  We’ll have more details as they are announced.
