100% true analog circuitry with subtractive synthesis

February 28, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on 100% true analog circuitry with subtractive synthesis

The SYNTHLAB uses a 100% true analog circuitry with subtractive synthesis which is designed in a classic way. This design is not new because it started in the early 70´s with the voltage controlled modular systems. The use of the low pass filter based on the transistor cascade lets the synthlab sound very similar to the well known early Moog synthesizers. Check out the full specs and see some videos inside.

As the SYNTHLAB has a built in MIDI interface you will find it easy to integrate into any MIDI studio setup. The SYNTHLAB also has a built in MIDI-TO-CV/GATE interface which can become very handy, when using vintage equipment. The SYNTHLAB is a hand-made true discrete analogue synthesizer built in Germany. We have used components from the 70s and 80s but also modern technology. There are no DSP´s or such built in, so the sound is true, pure and very experimental like a smal synthesizer laboratory – hence the name: SL-1 SYNTHLAB.

The setup of the SL-1 is very easy-to-use if you have played around with other anlogue synthesizers. Every parameter has its own pot for controlling and playing with the modulation and everything can be controlled manually in real-time. The controls of the modules are diveded into groups on the frontplate so they can be visually seperated for easier use. For basic setup you have 2 VCO´s and an external audioinput. The selected signal can be routed through the VCF and VCA before it reaches the audiooutput. For each VCF and VCA you have an own envelope generator. Additonally you have various modulation routing possibilities through the LFO´s.

Features

* 2 x VCO´s ( 2 waveforms – saw & pulse)
* 1 x VCF (low pass filter 24dB – Moog cascade)

Demonstration of the massive MacBeth M5N

February 28, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Demonstration of the massive MacBeth M5N

Here is a demonstration of the MacBeth M5N being played in 3 note polyphonic via a Kenton Pro4 in polyphonic cyclic mode! I believe that the Pro2000 unit will also do the same thing.
Each of the oscillators on the M5N gets its own CV from the Pro4. I wish my keyboard skills were a little bit better- but this will give you some idea!
Ised three cams for this- a Canon 60D, a Nikon D90 and my small Sanyo Xacti camera that sat on a tripod above things!
Hope you enjoy, Ken M
PS- Sadly, there is a squawky ‘artifact’ on this vid……=/

Modcan Super Delay & Digital Delay Comparison

February 28, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Modcan Super Delay & Digital Delay Comparison

People have been wondering about the difference in sound between the Modcan 30B Super Delay (which is a true analog delay) and the Modcan 59B Digital Delay, so I set up a simple audio demonstration. It’s not meant to be an analog vs. digital contest — as you’ll hear, both of them sound beautiful but have very different tonal characteristics as well as unique reactions to control voltage manipulation.

The Modcan Sequencer is triggering a Modcan 58B VCDO that is passing through a Modcan 68B Matrix Filter (using the 4-Pole Bandpass output). In the first half of the video, that signal is passing through the analog Super Delay — which is a mono device. I twiddle the knobs throughout and then eventually let triangle waveforms from the Modcan 61B Quad LFO take over the invisible finger chores.

The second half of the video is the same sequence and signal chain passing through the Digital Delay, which has been engaged to output the audio in stereo mode. Again, after some manual twiddling I put the 61B Quad LFO to work once more and send a slow-moving triangle waveform into the control voltage inputs.

As may be apparent from the studio configuration, I do love the Modcan modules for their sound, aesthetic beauty and a user interface that squeezes myriad functions per module into a reasonably-sized space. I hope you find this a useful and entertaining video.

Analoguebertragung

while 4/4 isn’t generally released by us, this one escaped destruction. we happened to be recording when this “analog transmission” bounced around the studio inadvertently. while waiting to record a future release we flagged down the drink cart, toasted the invention of analogue, and let the machines pilot themselves for a moment. afterward we coaxed and prodded and this was the result. in it’s entirety it’s over 30 minutes. we edited it down to 5. it is, in the truest sense, an example of control voltages fluctuating, peaking and subsiding. the tr727,while not heard on this track, is the “tightest” machine we have to keep the antiquated midi clock semi controllable. for this project in the (almost finished) studio, everything gets recorded to multiple tracks in one pass. the timing is so loose, good luck capturing dubs that would match.

the gear heard on this recording is: korg ms-10, korg sq-10, roland tr808, moogerfoogers, ensoniq dp/4, memorymoog, akai ax 60, akai s612 samplers.

iQ Audio Plug In Demo

February 28, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on iQ Audio Plug In Demo

EAR MACHINE LAUNCHES iQ

Equalizer plug-in learns the sound you like

Ear Machine today unveiled iQ, an equalizer plug-in designed to learn the user’s preference. iQ recommends equalizer settings by analyzing user ratings of examples. The result is displayed in a traditional equalizer window where users can fine-tune the recommendation.

“The idea for iQ came during a recording session when a client asked me to make the vocal track sound ‘buttery’,” said Andrew Sabin, Ear Machine owner and psychoacoustics researcher. “The client knew what he wanted, but wasn’t able to describe the settings that he was after. We designed iQ to help engineers communicate more easily with their clients, and to help beginning audio engineers figure out the sound they’re looking for.”

With iQ, users indicate how much they like each of a series of example settings by arranging dots from left to right, where each dot represents a different EQ setting. iQ uses a model of auditory perception to gradually hone in on the user’s preference. A meter at the bottom of the window indicates when iQ thinks it has learned what the user wants. The user then clicks “Create EQ” and iQ’s recommendation is displayed in a traditional equalizer window. Users can also double click any dot to display it in the equalizer window.

iQ is the first audio plug-in that is designed to learn a user’s preference. Ear Machine recently launched a related free web app (myMicSound) that is designed to learn a user’s preferred microphone characteristics.

iQ is compatible with AU hosts or VST hosts on the Mac or PC, and is compatible with RTAS wrappers.

See www.ear-machine.com/iQ.html to watch a video, purchase the plug-in, or download a free demo.

Soundsets by eXode

eXode has announced a brand new soundset for Reason 5 – Club Soundset V1. Here’s what eXode has to say about it…

I have been at hard work designing sound that work well for the clubs.

You can listen to three teasers of this soundset on my soundcloud site. Also the original wav files are downloadable so that you can listen to them in all their uncompressed glory.

I’ve tried to show some of the sounds in a musical context and not just presets on parade. An ambition with this soundset was to create sounds for Reason that could rival with Sylenth1 and DUNE in terms of sound.

The Club Soundset V1 contains the following:

  • 128 Thor patches
  • 64 Combinator patches
  • 12 drumkits for Kong

Pricing and Availability:
€25
