Roland SH-101 Vs TR-909 live session

July 31, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Roland SH-101 Vs TR-909 live session

A simple live session with the Roland SH-101 Vs TR-909 recorded from the output of an Soundcraft 200sr mixer through a Steinberg MR816x interface. No additional editing, EQ, effects or compression has been added. Just the boxes, unmixed, into a laptop.
My apologies for the Ken Burns effect, I recorded the video stream seperately and ran out of space and hence lost the video.

Just a simple 1 bar sequence with the sequencer of the 101 triggered from the rimshot of the 909.

Two new free VST plug-ins for Windows

J1000 has released two new free VST plug-ins for Windows. Here’s the details:

MQ55
Parametric mixing equalizer based on MQ57. Most of the functions are the same, except that MQ55 operates only in stereo mode, has more flexible pass filters and has gain ratio that acts like dry/wet control. This is my go-to EQ for music production.

SX36
Three-band stereo processor that separates audio into low, mid and high frequencies and lets you manipulate their stereo properties – width and panning or rotation. Crossover points are easily adjusted with single knob. It has simple meters for each range showing correlation or panning. High-pass filter cuts unwanted frequencies on side channel for more stable bass.

Maxikorg duophony

July 31, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Maxikorg duophony

“Analog sound. Impossible to recreate with today’s synths.”

A popular duophonic/monophonic classic from Korg. It’s got 2 analog oscillators that can be used for one fat monophonic sound or 2 VCO’s per voice for a fat duophonic sound. Flexible design with 2 voltage controlled filters and even a ring modulator. The Maxi-Korg is a great source of early Korg sound that rivals competitors like the OSCar and Roland SH-synths. No MIDI, no memory, but good bass and screechin’ leads! It has no CV input either, though it can be modified to accept externnal control from the less standard Hz/V protocol (also used by Yamaha).

Most people usually understand it best as two separate MiniKorgs inside one keyboard with all the controls to both. Most people will stack both voices as the triggering can be tricky as duophonic. It has the very effective ability to delay one voice before it triggers when played mono.

Mopho Programming In-Depth

July 31, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Mopho Programming In-Depth

The Mopho is actually pretty cool if you treat it like 4 track sequencer.

Mopho is a compact and affordable—but powerful—monophonic analog synthesizer. The voice architecture is identical to a single voice of the Prophet ’08, but with a couple of unique twists to distinguish it from its award-winning sibling. We have added two sub-octave generators—one per oscillator—for additional girth and crushing basses. It also has an audio input that lets you process external audio and mix Mopho’s own audio output back in pre-filter for feedback effects that can range from subtle distortion to extreme skronk. The Push It button is a manual trigger that lets you play a specific note or latch notes and sequences on. It can also step through a sequence to play short melodic lines without a keyboard. Of course, Mopho can also be used with a MIDI controller or external sequencer.

Mopho is fully programmable and all the parameters can be tweaked from the front panel. The four Assignable Parameters controls are assignable per program for optimum performance control. A free editor is available for Mac OS and Windows to facilitate programming. (And, if you already have a Prophet ’08, most of Mopho’s parameters can be controlled from the Prophet’s front panel via MIDI!)

Mopho is perfect for people who want to learn the ins and outs of real analog synthesis without spending a bundle, DJs looking to add some old school sonic spice to their setups, and musicians who will appreciate a great-sounding, very portable mono synth.

  • Affordable, fully programmable mono synth with a 100% analog signal path.
  • Classic, real analog sound—including legendary Curtis analog low-pass filter.
  • Process external audio through the filter and envelopes.
  • Just 7.5″ x 5″ (19.05 cm x 12.7 cm).
  • Free editor for Mac OS and Windows.

Time machine: ELGAM CAROUSEL Vintage Groovebox 1976

July 31, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Time machine: ELGAM CAROUSEL Vintage Groovebox 1976

It’s a combination between analog drum machine and organ. There isn’t too much information (neither pictures) about this drum machine on the web.

“The CAROUSEL is an interesting analog preset rhythmbox with accompaniment made by Elgam, Italy. It has rhythm (like the Elgam Rhythm Match series), bass, chord and 3 arpeggiators! Rare, obscure and very interesting! :-)

I played the Elgam Carousel along with a Roland DEP-5 for dely effects.”

Exploring the KORG Volca series

July 31, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Exploring the KORG Volca series

KORG Volca Beat has two Motion Recorder for track parameter variations in Stutter Delay Depth + Time and PCM Sounds Playback Speed. While in Record, you can automate parameters and, with a bit of skill, you can enhance the whole pattern. Not easy as it seems, but effective.

The KORG Volca Beats has six analog sounds (Kick, Snare, Lo/Hi Tom, Closed/Open Hat) and four PCM sounds (Clap, Agogo, Clave, Crash). In this video, there’s a quick run on the internal sounds, with coverage of main parameters. Warning: do not attempt to hear sounds thru PC internal speakers… especially Kick sound goes very low. No music on this video, just internal sounds from Volca Beats.
