How to: Melodyne Plugin Creating a Snare Drum with Audio to MIDI
In this video tutorial one converts a snare drum recording to MIDI data through Melodyne’s Editor Plugin. With this new MIDI file one can now replace the original Snare drum sound, re-enforce it, or completely change it all together.

New material from Empire State Human and KPT
“Something went wrong” is the newest single from the Glitch / EDM act KPT. The 9:03 track was mastered by Nic Heidt and offers a dark, hypnotic electronics that are a far cry from the more commercial EDM. It is again an example of how styles like EDM can perfectly crossover to other scenes like the dark wave one.
Following on from their 2012 album “The Art”, Empire State Human return with “Soul of the Machine”, their most personal album to date according to the band.
Says Aidan Casserly: “After we released 2012’s ‘The Art’, we got excited about what new doors of electronic pop could open. Having put 2 years of work (between other projects and releases) we felt there was more ground for improvement and development too. So, we went straight into writing/co-writing and producing the new ‘Massive Ego’ album (the first single ‘Sound of the Download’ lands August 2013) and it’s been literally non-stop electronic pop since for us. Remixes for Australian’s synth giants Parralox and up and coming Irish guitar pop band 5 Dollar Shakes have shown us we can be diverse and productive at once. Our new album ‘Soul of the Machine’, is coming from another synth angle to the pop of ‘The Art’.”
To coincide with the album release, there’s a promo video to the albums opening track “Love like Chrome” which you can watch below.
Track listing is as follows:
- LOVE LIKE CHROME
- BELOVED
- NOSTALGIA
- WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE
- SPACELAB ONE
- I FEEL ALIVE
- LIGHT CHASERS
- WELCOME TO THE FUTURE
- CHAMELEONS
- FRAMES OF THE WORLD

Absynth 5: Granular Synthesis with Envelopes and Envelope LFOs
A short video showing a granular synthesis sound design session in Absynth 5.
Notes on setting up the oscillator for granular synthesis.
1) I loaded an audio clip with a computer voice counting from 1-8
2) I set to synth method to Granular
3) Remember Absynth envelopes only subtract so you need set oscillator settings to Trans to 0 and Start to 97. In this way the lowest value of the envelope is the beginning of the sample and the largest values is the end of the sample.
4) In the Mod panel, Time % needs to be set 0 thereby freezing the speed of playback allowing the envelope to control playback speed.
Notes on envelope modulation:
1) The envelope controls the play head.
2) Each envelope segment can have an LFO which further modulates the play head
WOW2 – 21 incredible filter types with the famous vowel mode
SugarBytes dreamt of a WOW2 and now it is here! With a future-dripping user interface, 21 incredible filter types with the famous vowel mode. With distortions that cover your tracks with gas and put them on fire. Modulations that cause more trouble than your modular dark room. And finally that warm and juicy sound, that you were looking for.
– 21 Filter types like Lowpass, Bandpass, Highpass, Bandreject, Comb and much more. Low pass types up to 48 db, including flavors like SVF, Diode Ladder and Transistor Ladder.
The filters and distortions have been designed for best harmonics without aliasing, for high definition audio quality.
– Three different analog modeling overdrives and four digital distortion functions are included. Use them pre or post the filter.
– Modulation is power. Power is sex. Create stunning trance gates with the step sequencer, do some giant wobbles with the wobble generator or let all the modulators interact with each other. The LFO offers many different wave forms, restart options and sync flavors.
– Presets are just one click away. Randomize presets to inspire yourself.
Get WOW2 now! Skrillex, Boys Noise, SiriusMo, Modeselektor, MouseOnMars already did.
WOW2 is the new filter plugin from Sugar Bytes.

A Bit of Audio Mangling
An experiment in destruction of beautiful melodies.
Early 1937 recording processed real-time through a Buchla DIY 200 style clone synthesizer that I built.
Reverb was added via computer plug-in… everything else was one take.
Directre+Buffre Beat Mangling with Synth Noodling
Peff treats us with some nice synth noodling:
Just some weird jamming with directre and buffre. Original drum loops are from a recording of Tim Bulkley.
Time machine: Oberheim Matrix-1000 Analog Synthesizer (1987)
Vintage synthesizer single sound demo by RetroSound
Oberheim Matrix-1000 Analog Synthesizer from the year 1987
The small Oberheim with the big sound! Very underrated analog synthesizer module from Oberheim with six voices, two DCOs per voice, 24 dB low pass filder and matrix modulation like the big brother Matrix-12 and Xpander.
the demo shows self-programmed and factory sounds.
more info: http://www.retrosound.de
About the synth:
The analog Matrix 1000 is essentially 1,000 Matrix 6 patches in a single-space compact rackmount MIDI module. It has the same synth architecture as the Matrix 6. Each of its 6 voices have two DCO’s (digitally controlled analog oscillator), a low pass filter, 2 VCA’s, 3 envelope gens, 2 LFO’s, and 2 ramp gens. The sounds are plentiful and good enough, however sounds can only be edited via MIDI, so you’ll need an external MIDI editor (such as MOTU’s Unisyn) or Access’ Matrix Programmer to edit parameters. You can also load sounds from the Matrix 6 via SysEx or software.
The Matrix 1000 provides an excellent source of pads, textures and ambient sounds. It has 195 “keyboard” sounds, 118 “strings”, 130 “woodwinds & perc”, 239 “synthesizer”, 119 “bass”, 74 “lead” and 125 “effects”. For the price, there is no better way to find genuine analog Oberheim Matrix sounds in a compact and very in-expensive rack module that is loaded with more sounds than you’ll ever need! The older versions of the Matrix 1000 have a black front-panel. The newer models in the ’90’s have a cream colored face-plate.
