Anatomy of a Drum Machine: Roland TR-909 Emulator JOMOX 09

September 30, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Anatomy of a Drum Machine: Roland TR-909 Emulator JOMOX 09

massivebeatzzoffers his take on the Roland TR-909 inspired drum machine, the Jomox XBase 09
Built from 1997-2005 this now legendary drum box was first reviewed in June 1997 by SOS (Sound On Sound Magazine) asking: “So what do you get when you cross ’80s retro with ’90s know-how?”
They wrote:
XBase 09 is serious about emulating the Roland TR-909. Like the 909, it is an analog drum machine, and it sounds just like the 909, and more! It offers the same types of analog controls that the TR-808 and TR-909 did such as tuning, level, decay, snap, etc. However it provides more of these controls for more sounds than the originals ever did and has MIDI implementation and Patch memory making the XBase 09 a much more versatile machine than those originals.

Kick and snare are true analog, not emulation and not sampled. The Hihats, cymbal, ride, rimshot, claps and noise sounds are samples but are still quite tweakable. All your edited sounds can be stored into the 100 patches of memory. Use the built-in LFOs to modulate the Bass drum pitch, Snare Tune, Snare Snap, Snare Noise Tune, HiHat Tune or LFO 2.

The XBase 09’s built-in sequencer is also more advanced yet faithful to the style of its mentors. Step or Real-Time programming just like it’s done on the 909 and 808! However, on the XBase, any edits to the sounds will also be stored with the pattern or song! This really liven’s up your beats and allows you freedom and control to do things not easily possible on the original beat boxes! There’s also an extensive Shuffle mode. Of course the XBase 09 is also happy as a simple drum tone module, with all editable controls accessible using MIDI. The controls also send MIDI data when tweaked so you can record real-time edits into your external sequencer.

The XBase09′s editable controls include…
Bass drum — TUNE (controls the pitch envelope amount), PITCH (VCO tuning parameter), DECAY (controls the decay time), HARMONICS (changes the harmonics of the VCO using a diode limiter), PULSE (square wave impulse), NOISE (clap-like sound), ATTACK (controls how much of the PULSE and NOISE mix is added), EQ (smoothes the sound with a filter).
Snare drum — TUNE (controls the pitch of the two oscillators), NOISE TUNE (tunes the noise filter), XSNAPP (controls the proportion of noise), DECAY (noise decay time), DETUNE (detunes the two oscillators), NOISE TUNE (tunes the noise filter).
Sample section — OH DECAY (controls the decay time of the analog volume envelope for sample assigned to OHH), CH DECAY (same but for CHH), HH BAL (controls the volume balance between the samples assigned to OH and CH), TUNE defines the playback speed (pitch) of the sample.

MS-20 Mini With Added Sequencer (Mods)

Added a CD4022 based sequencer to a MS-20. Used the clock from the LFO to trigger the sequencer. Pretty basic for now

A Voice for the Voiceless

In this video one uses a TC-Helicon VoiceWorks, VirSyn HarmonyVoice app, Ableton Live and abunch of Moog and other synth gear to create an interesting vocal performance environment. Analog Control Voltage step sequencing created by Ableton Live and a Moog Multi-Pedal ad an interesting rhythmic dimension.

ALESIS ANDROMEDA A6 – Step sequencer

September 30, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on ALESIS ANDROMEDA A6 – Step sequencer

Alesis Andromeda A6 analog synthesizer step sequencer keyboard demo. Performing live ambient space music on Alesis A6 Andromeda analogue synth keyboard using the built-in step sequencer. Created using 2 oscillators, LFOs, filter / envelope adjustments, portamento, unison detune, delay effects on vintage Alesis A6 Andromeda analog synthesizer keyboard. Performed live, no external processing. Excerpt from a longer session.

Alesis_Andromeda_A6_back

The Andromeda A6 is a true analog synthesizer using two analog oscillators per voice, sub-oscillators, hard and soft sync and more! It features 16-voice polyphony. With the Andromeda, you’ll find a huge range of tonal possibilities: searing leads, warm pads, fat bass lines, extreme sound effects and more. And of course there are plenty of knobs (72) and buttons (144), even an assignable ribbon controller for addictive hands-on real-time control! The large high-resolution LCD display is excellent and shows you actual rather than relative values of parameters. Andromeda will integrate seamlessly into any studio with its total MIDI control and sync, individual voice outputs, stereo outputs and several audio inputs.

Andromeda is completely analog – no emulation! It features two analog filters per voice that sound great! They are a multimode 2-pole and a 4-pole lowpass. External audio can be routed through these filters too (three 1/4″ jacks)! As for modulation, Andromeda has three LFOs, each with six waveforms and they can be synced to MIDI clock. And there are three 7-stage envelopes with very creative and flexible functions. Also onboard is an extensive mod matrix for enormous freedom in configuring Andromeda’s sounds!

No analog synth would be complete without a set of classic effects and features. Andromeda also offers Portamento with nine slopes and legato functions. A built-in arpeggiator and analog-style sequencer are available, with MIDI sync! There are also some high quality digital effects such as reverbs, chorus, echo, distortion and more! Andromeda comes with 256 breathtaking preset patches plus 128 user. A PCMCIA-format memory card slot allows for additional programs and mixes. Andromeda is pure analog bliss, with all the features, stability and widgets of modern digital synths.

DSI Tempest as a 6-voice polysynth module

No effects added. Tempest stereo outputs to USB audio interface into ableton

This video takes a look at using the Dave Smith Instruments Tempest drum machine as a 6-voice polyphonic synth module.

The DSI Tempest is based on analog voices tailored to percussion, but the drum machine has a lot of synthesis capabilities that go beyond traditional drum synth sounds, as this video demonstrates.

the poetry of two source explorers:
klangstabils next move shadowboy – the awakening. since the beginning the concept behind klangstabil was defined by the question: what’s next? finding the answer has never been as exciting as today, because this time boris may and maurizio blanco do not simply turn over the page to the next chapter of this continuing project: they examine this question at face value. klangstabil combine the poetical strength within their music with it’s literary counterpart: on october 30, 2013, the shadowboy album will be published both as an audio release and as a printed book. and to reduce waiting time, ant-zen and megahertz present a first draft in aural and visual format: shadowboy – the awakening musically klangstabil follow the path they are very well known and loved for since releasing ‘taking nothing seriously’. a path of recognizability and complexity, melancholy and aggression, subtle sounds and brutal rhythms result in a unique and distinctive aural realization of this project’s concept. the video exemplifies the plurality of human characteristics while repeating one word: shadowboy. the filming took place at maschinenfest 2010 in oberhausen / germany and includes 200 people coming from klangstabils close surroundings. none of these people knew what to expect or how the film footage would be used. eight hours of shooting in real terms sufficed to capture the essence of all these people in digital format. even when it was not possible to offer room in the video for all participants, each one of them has added their part for the identification of the completed work because the shadowboy maintains his face by being all protagonists. his story is everyone’s story, translated into a fictitious world wherein a reality defined by klangstabil can be reflected. sound is speech, speech is sound, sound and speech merge – a significant point of view for klangstabil, typified by shadowboy.

‘i create, you destroy, you made me the shadowboy’

Jam session in Ableton Live, details below:

This is a quick demo track I set up while testing my software editors as VSTs inside Ableton Live. It goes on a bit long cause I was having fun – but you clearly don’t need to watch the video in its entirety to get the idea :)

Buchla Joystick Pad R

Thanks to a recent question asked by Chris Pottinger, in a Buchla Skype Tutorial, about the R and S outputs of the Buchla 223e/222e I put together this little video. The wonderful thing about these outputs is that you don’t need to program them, just take banana cables out (there are two outs: one for vertical finger movement the other for horizontal movement) a route them to your favorite parameters.

In this example I routed the vertical cv to vary the tempo of the arpeggiator while the horizontal cv simultaneously varied both the Modulation Index of a Buchla 261e and L-R panning of the 206e mixer.
