Modal Electronics 002 Synthesizer with Paul Maddox at NAMM 2015
Company co-founder and principal designer Paul Maddox of Modal Electronics (née Modulus) walks through the features of his Modal Electronics 002 analog/digital hybrid polysynth at NAMM 2015. After the overview he surfs through some example patches (with direct-in stereo sound).
Using high quality components, the Modal Electronics 002 is a premium product designed to be the flagship in the Modal Electronics range. The keyboard layout includes a semi-weighted, five octave key mechanism and has been ergonomically designed by musicians so that the hands fall naturally and intuitively to the controls. It provides twelve discrete voices of polyphony with full multi-timbrility if required. Adding to the ease of use is a large integral display screen that is context sensitive, i.e. it displays the control parameters of any control knobs immediately when touched by the user. Quick recall banks enable preset sequences and settings to be stored for instant use such as during a live performance. NCOs (numerically controlled oscillators) are used for stability and accuracy while an analogue transistor ladder filter provides classic ‘warm’ sounds.

Expression Dangler Prototype – Mark Steiner – Synth Vibrato
Part of the continual search for ways to connect direct human expression with synthesis. Nyle Steiner’s old prototype using a DC motor and my own modification/application to attach it for use while using both hands on the keyboard.
Checking out DEVO’s frontman Mark Mothersbaugh’s Synth Collection
The bright green, circular building of Mutato Muzika in Los Angeles is easy to spot when cruising down Sunset Boulevard. But most people might not realize it contains the creative hub of Mark Mothersbaugh, a founding member of DEVO turned award-winning Hollywood composer. Famous for his use of the synthesizer, Mothersbaugh has accumulated a vast collection over the years. We had the chance to check out a small selection of Mothersbaugh synths and spent some time talking about the future of music with the prolific artist.
Alva Noto – Xerrox MonoPhaser 2…. In SPACE!
Background video description:
I just added this awesome piece of video to the equally awesome piece by Alva Noto. The video is from from one of the solid rocket boosters facing the intertank (middle part of external tank). Not too much going on, except the weird noises of the tank draining, until booster seperation. At the end, the camera switches to a view looking straight up so you can see the parachute deployment. The launch clock is in the upper left corner.
