Edgar Froese, the head and founder of Tangerine Dream, had the wonderful idea of translating the current knowledge of the quantum physics – which he was very much interested in – into sound and already started this project before his sad death in January 2015. The cupdisc MALA KUNIA was the first music out of “The Quantum Years” series which was published in November 2014 on the occasion of the MMW Festival concert in Melbourne.
It was a great fortune that Edgar still had the chance to discuss his vision with the remaining band members and that Bianca, Edgar’s wife, decided to continue with Tangerine Dream. She knew that Thorsten, Ulrich and Hoshiko could face this huge challenge with their beautiful talents. At the same time this task would be a unique chance for the music coming into life. So the band continued developing these musical ideas after Edgar’s sudden “change of his cosmic address” and you will have the chance now to listen to some wonderful tracks. In honour of Edgar!

Thanks to Heidi Väisänen, Tuulikki Väisänen, and Renaud Guérin for operating the cameras!
The song was performed using only analog synthesizers, either played live or sequenced. The performance was recorded directly from the mixer to a stereo track and later mixed together with the ambience from the room. A few mistakes have been cut out and replaced with the audio from a rehearsal take.
Equipment used in this song: Roland TR-808, JX8P, Juno 60, Alpha Juno 1&2; Korg Polysix, Poly 61, Mono/Poly, Moog Source, DSI Tetra, Jomox AirBase99, Touched-by-sound DRM1, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Marion Prosynth, Akai MPC2500 (only for MIDI sequencing), M-Audio Trigger Finger, Yamaha 01v96, Lexicon MPX500 & MPX550, as well as a midi patchbay and additional preamps for my mixer.

During Tangerine Dream’s North American Encore tour of 1977, two of their concerts were thankfully broadcast over radio. The first was the concert at the Washington Lisner Auditorium on April 4th (see Tangerine Tree Volume 4: Washington 1977), and Montreal Palace des Arts followed soon after on April 9th. The still existing CHOM-FM radio station aired the complete show, and despite some minor technical flaws (and the disturbing comments from the CHOM-FM presenter during some of the tracks), Tangerine Tree Volume 18: Montreal 1977 is able to present another outstanding performance from the Froese/Franke/Baumann line-up.
The quality of the music alone would justify an official release as it has all the trademarks which made Encore such a fan favourite. For the North American tour, Tangerine Dream always began their concerts with variations on Cherokee Lane and Monolight, which were then followed by music which was, for the most part, completely improvised. The band also appeared onstage with Laserium, an outfit that produced laser light spectacles.
