Experimental: Pyro Board: 2D Rubens’ Tube!
Rubens’ Tube is an awesome demo and here we take it to the next level with a two-dimensional ‘Pyro Board’. This shows unique standing wave patters of sound in the box.
The pressure variations due to the sound waves affect the flow rate of flammable gas from the holes in the Pyro Board and therefore affect the height and colour of flames. This is interesting for visualizing standing wave patterns and simply awesome to watch when put to music. Thank you to Sune Nielsen and everyone at Aarhus for sharing this demonstration with me! Cabaret Voltaire: New Back Catalogue Compilation
Following last year’s reissue series and boxset, Mute now set to release a compilation of 7″ singles, edits and album tracks covering the their history.
Last year, Sheffield pioneers Cabaret Voltaire released a series of remastered reissues of their back catalogue through Mute. They included a new vinyl pressing of Red Mecca as well as the #8385 (Collected Works 1983 – 1985) boxset, which gathered several of the group’s later albums and which tQ’s John Doran called “good enough to make the pupil dilate and the pulse quicken” in the introduction to his comprehensive interview with Richard H. Kirk.
Now Mute have announced the release of a new compilation in June, which follows on from last year’s reissues. Titled #7885 (Electropunk to Technopop 1978 – 1985), as its name suggests it bridges the two phases of the group, gathering music from both their earlier, more overtly experimental explorations while Chris Watson was still a member, and their later forays into innovative pop. The aim of the compilation, says Kirk in an accompanying statement, was to provide a concise overview of the Cabs’ history: “[a] choice of 7” singles, edits and shorter album tracks, a kind of sound bite take on CV.”
Its tracklist is listed below, and the compilation – released on CD, double vinyl and digital download on 23rd June – will also feature sleevenotes from Kirk and Mute’s Daniel Miller. With Kirk now the sole member of Cabaret Voltaire, we’re also promised that new recorded projects and live performances will take place in 2015.

A new synth from Teenage Engineering ? The PO-12
Robert Pluma has shared some interesting photos from last week’s Moogfest, including some shots of what appears to be a new Teenage Engineering synth, the PO-12.
“I wasn’t taking notes so I would suggest confirming details with TE, but from what I recall it … has a spring-loaded stand which doubles as a pitch bender when pressure is applied, includes 23 switches and two knobs (not sure if they’re rotary encoders or potentiometers), and has a built-in hang tab for retail display.”
Additional details:
- Teenage Engineering had intended to give these away at Moogfest, but all but the one seen in the photos were delayed by customs
- Integrated hang-tag says ‘moogfest special’ on this unit, and presumably on giveaway units
- Employs a Silicon Labs EFM32 [32-bit ARM microcontroller]
- Labels on tactile switches: ‘sound’, ‘pattern’, ‘bpm’, numbers ’1-16′, ‘clear’, ‘FX’, ‘play’, ‘write’
- Labels on knobs: ‘A’, ‘B’
- Other labeling on board: ‘HIP-HOP’, ‘DISCO’, ‘TECHNO’ (looks like they’re selectable options next to tiny surface-mount LEDs)
- Appears to have a bpm LED
- Has 1/8″ input/output jacks
- Not sure of exact dimensions, but appears to be the same size as the area to the left of the screen on the OP-1
- Retail price will be (I think they said) $49 US
- Uncertain of this [detail], but I think it was an initial run of 200 for Moogfest

Robotic Drum Set and Analog Bass
This is drum & bass piece performed live using an automated drum kit and other percussion, playing together with a selection of vintage and new analog synthesizers.
All the sound is being generated in real time, the analog synths coming through the main rack mixer and the robotic percussion being recorded by microphones.

Modulars : Roland System 100m (sub bass), Roland System 700 (basses), Doepfer system (stabs and atmospheric sound).
Other Synths : Yamaha CS-10 (more basses), Studio Electronics Omega 8 (chords and atmospheric sound), Korg Monotron Duo (more basses).
