Ableton Tutorial: Using The New Glue Compressor In Live 9
In this video tutorial, Dubspot instructor and course designer Evan Sutton takes a look at Ableton Live 9’s new Glue Compressor effect, which allows users to “glue” together of the elements of a drum part or an entire track.
One of the new effects in Ableton Live 9 is the Glue Compressor, which can help “glue” your mix together and create a more uniform sound. This new device was created in partnership with analog software modeling experts Cytomic, who have created a plug-in that aims to re-create the effect of an SSL bus compressor, which Evan explains “has been known to glue mixes together.” This compressor differs from the regular Ableton compressor in that it’s intended to be pushed a bit harder and used on multiple tracks at once, adding some punch without losing the sound’s character. In this video Sutton demonstrates how this new effect sounds on different sorts of audio tracks in Ableton Live to give you a sense of what this new compressor can do.
Roland TR-606 triggers SDS-200
Here I show how I trigger two drum modules from the trigger outputs (hi tom and low tom outputs) of the Roland TR-606.
The drum modules:
0:00 The Sonor Mini Mammut is a drum module which can play 8-bit samples via rom chips. It contains a chip with a single sample. A cartridge with 8 additional sounds can be inserted (like seen in the video). The cartridge contains samples like guiro, shaker, cabasa…
On the panel you can choose the sample you want to play. The samples can be modified in many ways, including an analog filter.
Made in Germany, 1986. I added a delay effect.3:55 The Simmons SDS-200 is a fully analogue module with 2 channels – 2 toms. It is highly tweakable, you can do a lot more than toms – even ring modulator effects. Made in England, 1984.
Both modules have trigger inputs (no MIDI). These two modules are highly tweakable and allow creativity.
The MS-20 Mini Part 7- VCA2
Here is a demonstration of the sound and functionality of the 2nd VCA present in the Korg MS-20 Mini, with patching examples.
KORG MS-20mini The Self Triggering Patch
The KORG MS-20mini can be set in a self triggering condition by patching the square/pulse MG out to ESP section and, from ESP, back to EG 1&2 Trig In. On this way, you can fiddle with front panel controls while the machine is repeating EGs on and on. For pure fun, a little bit of pink noise is processed with S&H for FMing both VCOs.

This video shows how to first record and overdub clips in Note Mode and then how to play and combine them in Session Mode.

New ambient track by Steve Roach

Recorded live Saturday morning Feb 16, 2013. Created with Steve’s mobile live – studio.

The house is empty now, the memories of the past meet with today.
Hope you enjoy this gift to my friends of the music.
