Correction: it is the “Basilar” membrane, which is what I say, but somehow between recording the script and actually drawing the stuff I got confused and thought I just pronounced my Vs poorly. Always sad to have such a simple and glaring error in something I put hundreds of hours of work into, but a “Vasilar” membrane can be the kind that a Vi draws to explain Viola Vibrations, I guess! Making up new words is just so prolightfully awstastic.

Props to my Bro for excellent and creative swing pushing, and to my Mamma for filming it.

As you can notice, it’s asymmetrical: left and right audio channels. I love things that appear to be similar, but are not.

We reported about the Donut looper a couple of days ago and now the Strange Agency has released a new inspiring video using the Donut:

Donut™ lets you record loops in two dimensions.

You can use it like a phrase looper, by recording horizontally while using the step controls to step through vertical recording position. You can use it as a realtime processor by using ThruRecord mode. You can record and playback at completely differently speeds. You can even record backwards! You can record and playback diagonally across the Donut™ surface, creating glitchy staccato sounds. You can record and playback with multiple heads, recording or playing multiple positions at once. You can spread the heads vertically to access different portions of the Donut™, or you can spread them horizontally to create an echo effect.

Arduino SpeakJet Module Prototype

This is an Arduino driving a SpeakJet chip to produce allophones and weird synth sounds. It works on an algorithm coded in Arduino, which is basically a sequence with a variable, the slide potentiometer position amount, which makes the sound change. The rythm and velocity must be changed into the code.
It has an LCD to display the amount of the slide potentiometer. It says “Voice Pitch” but it could be anything. The first slide potentiometer is the volume.

Based on the sequence you can produce robot voices. The easy way should be to add another chip which translates text into sound.

The Balloon Synth

One day we had this idea of trying to turn the annoying noises of a child’s ballooon into music, by doing the right treatment.

We captured many samples, making all sorts of noises, extracting the air, hitting, rubbing. And then we edited it into a beat, a bassline and a melody, with the right processing tools.

Keeping up with our great hero, the late John Cage, we always want to remind everyone that everything and everyone has music inside. You just gotta know how to bring it out!

Late night improvisation on the Cocostuber 2

The cocostuber is, simply, two state variable filters and two voltage controlled 8bit samplers. the unique or special aspect to the design is that the frequency of each sampler is “divided” into a different part of the circuit into 16 octaves (which follow the tuning), available as general modulators for use on any of the four “modules” of the circuit. a total of 32 tunable DC and audio range digital signals.

On a typical Cocostuber these are “nodes” to connect through your hands or alligator clips or whatever. since the Grass Stimulator had lotsof rotary switches, i decided to keep with that vibe, and put every single octave division onto rotary switches. all of the possible patches can be either obtained through the switches or they can be split and multed via banana jacks on the facepanel.

This time I have connected the Serge to the cocostuber and the cocostuber is sending the pulses and some cv to the Serge. They talk nicely.  Again this is a real time recording straight to a stereo track with no edits.
