R.I.P. Christopher Lee – LOTR / Star Wars / Dracula…
Christopher Lee, the British actor (and musician) famous for his work in almost 300 movies, from “The Lord Of The Rings”, “Star Wars”, “The Man With The Golden Gun” over “Dracula” to “The Wicker Man” has died, aged 93. Lee passed away at London’s Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on Sunday where he was being treated for respiratory and heart problems. His last public appearance was at the Berlin film festival in February.
Lee will be best remembered for playing Count Dracula (1958) in his ‘Hammer Horror’ days, but he was also a star of two of the biggest franchises ever made: Saruman in “Lord of the Rings” and Count Dooku in “Star Wars”. Other films he played in include “The Curse of Frankenstein” (1957), “The Hound of the Baskervilles” (1959), “The Wicker Man” (1973), “The Man with the Golden Gun” (1974), “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” (1990) and so on.
Lee was also a musician, last December he released the heavy metal single “Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing” (a take on the Christmas classic “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”), his last single ever.
Christopher died as he prepared to start filming for his latest movie, “The 11th”, co-starring Uma Thurman.

Oscilloscope Music
If you plug an audio signal into an oscilloscope, you can see an exact representation of the same waves that reach your ear as sound waves. That’s pretty much the closest possible correlation between image and sound.
Oscilloscopes are used to measure voltages. Audio signals are voltages before they reach the speakers, where they are converted into sound waves that travel through the air. But apart from the useful capability of measuring these voltages, oscilloscopes also look great. Particularly the old analog ones with cathode ray screens.
The beam of electrons draws a bright green dot. If two audio channels (i.e. a stereo signal) are used as input, it’s possible to use one channel to move this dot up and down, and the other one to move it left and right, like on an Etch A Sketch board, just much faster. The brightness varies, depending on the speed of it’s movement, making the image look smooth and kind of organic. I’m using a Tektronix D11 5103N, which has a particularly large and clear screen.

Full Analog Signal Path Drum ‘n Bass Vinyl
This video shows the journey from start to finish of creating a drum ‘n bass track with a 100% analog signal path from the synthesizers creating the music in real time, being recorded to open reel tape, mastering the tape with outboard analog equipment, and finally cutting the tape directly to vinyl.

The gear used in the synthesizer studio included:
Modulars : Roland System 700 (Drums), Moog series 900 (minor chords), Roland System 100m (sub basses, wind sfx, sirens), Arp 2500 (squelchy stabs), Buchla 100 series (SFX)
Other Synths : modified x0xb0x (low bass) Korg MS-20 (other bass), Roland System 100 standalone synth (other bass), modified Korg Monotron Duo (other bass)
FX : Roland Space Echo RE-501 (tape delay, chorus, spring reverb), Roland DC-30 (analog chorus-echo), Roland Dimension-D Analog Chorus
Mixer : Tascam M308b
The mixed signal was recorded in a separate studio using a Studer mixer and tape machine. The premaster was then brought to a third studio where the tape was mastered using the following gear.

The master was then brought to a forth studio where it was run from tape through a few more pieces of outboard gear to finalize the signal and cut directly to a 12″ vinyl record.
This video was taken with a cell-phone camera at the various locations and the audio for the video was recorded and limited in a digital audio workstation in parallel to the analog signal flow.
