The “best of” Pet Shop Boys soon in your stores

One can always debate the term “best of”

Pet Shop Boys are to release a 19-song best-of titled “Ultimate Pet Shop Boys”. The best-of will also be available as a special edition with a bonus DVD of vintage BBC live performances. The new release will be preceded by the newly recorded single “Together”. The new song, Together, was written and recorded this month with Tim Powell (ex-member of the Xenomania production team which wrote tracks for Cher, Kylie Minogue, Dannii Minogue, Pet Shop Boys, and Sugababes). The track will be issued as a single, but no release date has been announced.

The DVD in the special edition will hold 27 live performances taken from various BBC programs including of course “Top of the Pops”. The DVD will furthermore also include the Pet Shop Boys’ full performance opf their last June set at the Glastonbury festival.

New single from Celluloide – “Coeur 8-bit”

‘Coeur 8-bit’, the first digital single of the upcoming album ‘Hexagonal’ will feature remixes by Page, The Rorschach Garden, and Said Fantasy (new project of Joy Electric’s Ronnie Martin) and second track “Faire Du Bruit” remixed by Foretaste.

The Nlog for iPad has arrived

Tempo Rubato has announced Nlog MIDI Synth (App Store link) – a new iPad synth that they describe as a “professional virtual analogue synth”.

NLog MIDI Synth is based on the company’s NLOg synth, but adds hardware MIDI support, via the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer. Tempo Rubato says that other interfaces, like Akai’s Synthstation, will be supported in future updates. The app is also usable without MIDI interface with an on-screen keyboard, as shown above.

NLog MIDI Synthesizer includes full hardware MIDI implementation for note on/off including velocity control, pitch bend, sustain pedal, modulation wheel and assignable MIDI controller.

NLog MIDI Synth turns an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch into a hardware synth for $8.99, which is a very interesting development. We’re expecting MIDI support to become a de facto requirement for iOS synths in the next few months.

Getting creative with the Bliptronome

Nice work on the Bliptronome

For this creative thing I spent the evening with my buddy Jeff getting his computer set up to use the Bliptronome I assembled for him.

At the end of the evening we were messing around with some loops he had made in Reason with MLR.

Very disappointed with the reaction time of the Bliptronome. We could not get reliable 16th notes out of it. The fastest we could play consistently was 8th notes.

Lack of a proper Pro 12 demo

An analog versus a digital voice test of the Sequential Prophet 5 (rev 3) synthesizer (1978):
– L channel = Sequential Pro One synth (1981)
– R channel = Creamware Pro 12 synth module (2006), in single voice mode

Mostly focusing on basic sonic quality, not features. Envelopes and filter levels were matched to eachother by ear (the number settings differ). Pro 12 was played with EMU Xboard 61. No added fx or EQ. Both were recorded through the same mixer and soundcard.

There’s quite a lack of proper Pro 12 demos on internet, hence I made this one for others deciding about it… A HQ mp3 of the test can be found at: www.harlemnightsmusic.com/PRO_ONE_VS_PRO­_12.mp3

To my ears, the Pro 12 held up surprisingly well in this test against a famous analog bass synth. Main sonic differences were in the filter and pulse width range. I would say the basic sound

In a polyphony test, against a real Prophet 5, this difference may be larger, as the oscillators will be summed. But if you play the Pro 12 in two voice unison with a slight detuning, you still got six phat voices and won’t be far off

Having a Moog in mind

Nice demo of the Xenon groovebox

First demo that I did with the awesome Xenon groovebox on my iPad. I especially love how the synths sound in this one, they’re surprisingly good! Highly recommend this app (it also runs on iPod touch and iPhone).

Over 2,700 images were shot over the course of 3 weeks (some were also reused) and compiled in Final Cut Pro 7 and After Effects CS4. In less than 2 weeks the images went from memory cards to final video output, making it the fastest edit I’ve ever done.

In that two weeks, all the compositing with holographic characters, additional motion graphics, camera movements, audio adjustments, color correction, titles and other effects were added to the original image line.

Everything you see on the screen was shot through a Canon D50, including the holograms.Elements were not added to the original images, only rearranged. Many-a-night’s sleep was lost during the process, but it was ultimately worth it.
