This is part of a complex pattern sequencer. It’s been in the works for quite a while and we finished our first working prototype last night. It’s based on Rob Hordijk’s benjolin circuit with a bunch of tweaks.

Well, its officially cold and wet again. its time to get back to Noystoise. over the past few months i have just been taking it easy and working on small scale projects. mostly just modding/fixing things for people for petty cash. i have also been helping my friend Matt build a couple hundred FuzzStang pedals. if you are into boutique fuzz, these are where its at. please don’t ask me for the schematic though, i wont give it to you.since its become un-fun outside, i have started a couple of projects, one of which is almost done. i figured i had better catch up on my blog before i have too many big projects to blog about.This is a project among many that i have been meaning to post. i began this project in July and was finished by august. it started with a “Miles-388” keyboard, commonly known as the AK-900 or Hing Hon EK-001. i stripped the keyboard down to the chip and rebuilt it onto my Frankenstein proto-board. while exploring the circuits’ capabilities, i seem to have caused some damage to the chip internally that caused some of the keys to go silent. it was tragic but worth it considering i was able to devise a way to trigger an envelope generator to modulate a VCF. this is a mod that i would have loved to have had on my recent Orange Hing Hon.with the functionality of the keyboard hindered, i decided to build a “quick” lite version of what i would later build off of in the future. hence the name Light Miles.
Circuit benders are at it again
There are a total of 26 new knobs and two new switches on the front panel. The standard KPR77 has no control over any sound parameters and as a result is a rather lifeless machine but these new knobs take it into a whole new world of analogue percussion. We have also adjusted the trigger pulse of the bass drum to give it a more 808’ish clicking punch instead of the standard weak tick.
More background info:
The Korg KPR77 is one of those analogue beatboxes from the early 80’s that should probably be seen as Korgs answer to the Roland TR606. They were released in the same year but Korg made the huge mistake of not having ‘Roland TR’ written on the front, which is plainly a criminal error when it comes to analogue percussion. At least the absurd price of the TR606 these days would suggest as much. What didn’t help the Korg was that despite the fact that it had an LCD display (with a orange backlight!), the programming interface was initially somewhat counter intuitive despite being far superior to the TR606, and after a few years the front panel buttons usually only operated under steam hammer pressure. The other drawback was that the KPR77’s stock soundset seemed to have a complete lack of magic about it. The bassdrum is lightweight and weak with a poor attack and apart from the halfway decent toms, every other sound could be found better elsewhere. Having said that, the KPR77 is a lot more fun to use than the TR606 and can probably be picked up for less than a third of the price.
KORG goes circuit bending
Korg has released the schematics of their little Monotron synthesizer. Allthough this little cuty was being hacked the day it came out, now there is an official schematic to follow. As the Monotron is a complete analog synth it is ideal for ‘circuit bending’.
Furthermore, with the price of a Monotron low enough it lets users experiment with it without the fear of going bankrupt if the ‘experiment’ fails! The Monotron seems to be popular as well with the educational institutes. Mainly because the Monotron is so easy to modify/repair (fully analog circuitry), giving students a good insight and making it ideal for school. How about that!?
Well, there is one warning Korg is handing out. If you choose to start an ‘experiment’ with your Monotron beware of the fact that any full factory warranty expires. So circuit bend at your own risk!
