AirVox – Gesture Controlled Music App for iOS

iPad controlling two synths (TouchOSC, Evolver & Nova)
Background information:
For this experiment with my iPad I designed a basic layout for TouchOSC to help me control 2 synths at same time. To do that, I create a keyboard and 2 XYpads on the layout. The keyboard points to channel 1 (the novation nova) while the touchpads goes to channel 2 (DSI Evolver).
Using a Camera Connector I can drive coreMIDI to a midi interface with USB. The one I’m using here is an ESI Miditerminal M4U, that gives me 4×4 midi ports and 1 USB port. By doing this, the Miditerminal get both midi signals and power thru the USB from the iPad, and let me send midi signals thru different ports. The last step is to configure on each synth which midi channel will they receive, so there I had to set channel 1 on the Nova and 2 on the Evolver.
Imogen Heap performing live with data gloves as controllers
Imogen Heap provides a cracking performance without any instruments, just glove controllers for overdubbing and other processing.
Debuted at the recent TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh, the gloves incorporate stereo wrist-mics like the ones Immi has been using in her live performances on recent tours, which allow her to sample and loop any sound within her reach.
They add a whole new dimension to this idea however, by allowing her to wirelessly control the sounds using hand movements and gestures. In this clip she: high-pass filters audio by “cupping” the audio in her hands; builds “air drum” loops from scratch; controls volume, reverb and panning by “conducting” and even uses some kind of time-scrunch/scratching processing towards the end.
Immi says the idea for the gloves came to her in a dream, although other people have done similar things years before – for example Julie Wilson-Bokowiec & Mark Alexander Bokowiec’s Bodycoder project.
As always though Imogen brings a unique accessibility to the technology. Just as she uses the internet to create genuine connections between herself, her music and her fans, so the gestures she uses with the data gloves are musical, intuitive and easily comprehensible to the audience.

Cycling 74 debuts a new video series in which I demonstrate some practical uses of Max and share the patches I make. In this first episode, I’m exploring what can be done with some inexpensive piezo mic elements and Tristan Jehan’s analyzer~ external. But really, I’m just having an embarrassing amount of fun.

Robots covers “The Beautiful People” by Marilyn Manson

Intially I was working on my own version of Mad World and I did complete it however the Robot Cello didn’t work out because the sound of the solenoinds and stepper motor was drowning out the song. So I scrapped the project altogether. One night I was working on the Cello and the stepper motor started to jitter almost ripping the Cello sting and Bow apart. As I was jumping over to the power switch I noticed that the jittery sound reminded me of a song. That song turned out to be The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson. I programmed a small part for the Cello and it sounded great. Who would have ever though to use a Cello in that song? 2 months later…. my video was complete. So Enjoy. I may follow up with a another video showing what circuits, parts and tools that were used to make these robots.
I would also like to thank jtodd900 for his YouTube video “The Beautiful People guitar cover WITH TABS”. It was very helpful with respect to programming my Robot Guitar. Muting the strings was a bitch but if you look at the solenoids on Fret 4 and 8 you will see that I covered the pads with foam and velvet. It is soft enough to stop the strings from vibrating.

Electric Tea 2.0 is the second in a series of works that put sound where it doesn’t belong. This table was an installation at the 2010 Urbanscapes Festival in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The sounds in the water come from 8 MP3 players playing synced sounds that looped every 5 minutes. Left and right channels each played different sounds yielding 16 individual sounds to play with.
The 4 orbs are connected to the speaker in the middle of the table. When a person holds an orb and touches the water at the same time, the sound passes through their body and into the speaker. Multiple notes can be played by touching more than one cup.

FaceOSC is a tool for prototyping face-based interaction. It’s built on non-commercial open source FaceTracker code from Jason Saragih.

Some of the “face gestures” (or metrics) are more stable than others. Lighting can also have a huge influence on the stability of your values: even lighting from the front coupled with a dark background can give the best results.
