Making modules for the Eurorack

August 7, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Making modules for the Eurorack

I hope you are having a nice summer holiday, anyway in my spare time I’ve made a few modules for my Eurorack. The inspiration for these came from a Quad Slew design from navs modular lab blog. In that article I came across a link to a DIY page by Doepfer which I hadn’t seen before. There’s plenty of simple projects there and so I set to work and ended up building a Quad Slew, a Dual Inverter, a CV Amplifier, an Audio Mixer and an expansion port for my A-137-2 Wave Multiplier II. And here’s the result.

There’s some discussion about the Quad Slew over on the Muff Wigglers Forum

Step sequencing with a Doepfer MAQ16/3 & a Synthesizers.com Q60 step sequencer

Martin Peters demonstrates step sequencing with a Doepfer MAQ16/3 & a Synthesizers.com Q60 step sequencer.

This is an attempt to try to show you how a sequence can be made. I found out making an instruction video is not that easy but I just wanted to share this with you. After making the video I noticed my voice was a bit soft so I tried to emphasis it with a little EQing; hope you can understand what I am saying. I did not want to redo the video because it wouldn’t be improvised anymore and I think the sequence worked out quite well. Making sequences is not an exact science so this is just an example and I do not always do it as shown. And I am not an expert in sequencing. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Dutch electro synth heat

Very impressive :-), here´s what he has to say about it:

Its quite warm in the Netherlands these last few days and the attic, were my equipment is, is even more warmer. But I managed to video this improvisation. Row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 has an 8-step sequence for the self-built Modular. Row 2 is used to gate the Ian Fritz All-In EG which envelope is connected to the Resonant LoPass Gate clone. The Formant noise is fed to the input of the LPG clone. Row 3 of the MAQ16/3 is shifting the Synthesizers.com Q960 sequencer which has sequences on row 1 and 3 which are alternated by the Q962 sequencer switch. Row 2 of the Q960 is connected to the Q150 Transistor Ladder Filter to modulate the frequency level. In the second part of the video the Waldorf Q Keyboard joins with chords and the Clavia Nord Lead 1 and the Roland XP-80 performs some improvised solo’s. The original video is somewhat more than 12 minutes so I skipped the first 2 minutes because I did not want to cut off the end. You can view the original video on my website soon.
My daughter Tessa is on a school trip to Paris for a few days and this evening she phoned from the top of the Eiffel Tower, which explains the title.

May 25, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on DIY Synth kit from Doepfer released

As announced previously this year the DIY Synth is now released. The DIY Synth is the beginning of a a new product line: a low cost DIY kit to build a full-fledged analog synthesizer. The kit is made of an assembled and tested pc board that includes all that is necessary to build a standard analog synthesizer.

Prices:
Euro 100.00 (without controls, sockets, switches, cables, power supply and case, without temperature control of the VCO)
Euro 120.00 (same as above, but with temperature control of the VCO)

Obviously you need to add potentiometers, knobs, rack etc to get something useful!

The A-100

March 19, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on The A-100

Doepfer’s A-100 Analog Modular System brings back all the flexibility and old-school programming of vintage modular synthesis – but the A-100 is new and comes with some modern features. Just like the classic Moog, Arp, E-mu, Buchla, Serge, and Roland modular synthesizers of the sixties and seventies, the A-100 system is a true analog system, yet it’s only been in production since 1995. It features analog subtractive, additive, FM, wavetable sequencing, and vector synthesis methods. Pictured above is a behemoth system, actually four cases full of modules plus 3 MAQ16/3 sequencers, 3 MS-404‘s and a Shaltwerk sequencer…all linked into one massive analog beast!

“That’s definetly what i mostly like. Of course, nobody can’t listen this hypnotic meditative sound nonstop, even me, but in any way everbody may have an inner feeling for his audioactive base, which can’t become affected by time nor by mode. This is the art of sound sound of my soul.
The original track runs about 35 min. Unfortunately i need more time for creating the video than for the music, but creating a video is a step which can be done at all times. It’s like a job. Creating the sound / music is not possible at all times, it’s more as if i must be touched by the spirits. At first it needs time to create the patch. Sometimes i’m crazy lucky and the cable connections find their routes like patched by a ghost’s hand. The i’ve only to catch the right moment when my mind and fingertips are sensitive enough for the magic session. That can’t be forced !”
