AMALGAM: remedy for the laptop performer blues

May 19, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on AMALGAM: remedy for the laptop performer blues

  • This is my Bachelor’s degree project in design, from the Bergen National academy of the arts.
  • When writing this, I’m still reeling after my presentation, and the great feedback from my sensors. They thought it was a “really, really good project”, and they even used the word “wise”, to my amazement. Now, enough tooting of my own horn, this is what it’s about:

The problem I wished to attack, was the lack of visual communication in most of today’s electronic live acts. The artist usually stands on stage with a laptop, bobbing his head, and that’s it.
In acoustic music, even in the worst case scenario, there is at least some element of performance, since the instruments don’t play themselves. In electronic music, unfortunately they do.

So how can we bring the performance back into electronic music?

Short answer: I expanded the physical space into a virtual one, and brought back the physicality of the performance through clever (and magic) technology.

Long answer: Watch this video presentation.

Electronic music concert – Part I & II

May 10, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Electronic music concert – Part I & II

Background information to these two nice videos:

RETROTECH is an electronic music concert created e composed by CARLOS TRILHA. On stage, he use synthesizers, analogue sequencers and drum machines from the 70’s and early 80’s. These historical instruments evoke the origin of characteristic electronic sounds that are now widely used in many types of pop and electronic music.

A unique detail of this production is that they do not use loops or sound libraries. All the sounds are created from real instruments and are first generation, allowing RETROTECH to make a striking reinterpretation of the classic sound of electronic music. The highlight of the live performances is the use of rare analog instruments, staged to show the public how these interesting devices work. In addition, RETROTECH also uses a special set of projection images from generative code (created in real time), synchronized by software written with MAX/MSP/JITTER by ALESSANDRA MARFISA specially for each performance. RETROTECH is a work that recalls the “belle epoque” of electronic music; more than just an exciting audio-visual experience, it is “an inspiring journey through time for lovers of contemporary art.”

Revival: Dance Or Die – Psychoburbia

April 14, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Revival: Dance Or Die – Psychoburbia

Dance Or Die prepare a comeback in June 2011 with their 6th (concept) album, “Nostradamnation”. Tracks known so far include “Sleeping in your grave”, “432000”, “Purgatory”, “Empty hearts”, “Northern Winter” and “Helios”. The news was announced on the band’s official website.

Dance or Die – remember their 1992 hit “Psychoburbia” – is an electronic band, formed in 1988 by the two Berlin residents Andreas Goldacker and Gary Wagner. Falgalas (born Heiko Duus) joined the band in 1993, first for live touring, later as full member. Chris L. (born Christian Lorenz) joined in 1998, so far only for live performances.

Their first, eponymously-titled mini album was the first release ever of Berlin-based label Machinery. After the label’s demise, they signed with Polydor in 1997. But after one album (“Dehumanizer”) that partnership ended. 2001 saw the release of their final (until now) album “Schlafende Energie” on Synthetic Symphony. For the new album the band has joined hands with Out Of Line. (Via SL)

In Search of the Unsound, Part II

April 1, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on In Search of the Unsound, Part II

The Pleasure of Fear: Horror at Unsound

Horror is an essential element in modern music that aspires to break sonic boundaries and generate new spaces for expression and emotions. The Polish Unsound festival, celebrated every autumn in the cold climate of Kraków, knows that all to well, and that’s why the 2010 edition had the concept of horror as its central theme, with artists such as Ben Frost and Demdike Stare. The PlayTV cameras were there and didn’t only record the performances at Unsound. We went with the intention of exploring horror’s place in music, led by journalist Philip Sherburne, our guide from place to place, across artist to artist, and who led our reflections through the labyrinth of emotions that is Unsound.
