Using the Metasonix R54 as the rhythm track for some new ideas with the modular synthesizer. 3 tracks were recorded into cubase. Reverb, panning effects & compression added.

Using only the pokey.synth module for sound source. I’m also running the uLFO sine wave through the Aux input to demonstrate the SR function.

I’m using my uStep/Short Bus to trigger Envelators which are outputing CV Into the “vol” input on the Pokey. The Pokey module has 2 built in VCA’s! :) which is pretty awesome! Z8000 is also being clocked via Short Bus/uStep which is controlling pitch for pokey osc 1 & 2, uLFO pitch, SR CV (on pokey) and Wave CV on Pokey.

I decided that rather than blowing up my laptop at this stage of the project,icould refine the pure data patching first, using a virtual switch system before integrating the hardware switches with the arudino, later. The purpose of this system is to provide a complete live performance system that incorporates lights, sound, and dance in one cohesive new form. The helmet, which looks like an afro, is made of carbon fiber and will house lip and breath sensors, a wireless microphone system, in-ear monitoring with ambient mics (so I can hear things around me without taking the helmet off), a digital compass for directional processing, an accelerometer, and two very powerful PC fans so I don’t have a heat stroke while wearing it. Why have a carbon fiber helmet? Primarily because a friend who is a professional creator of artificial limbs offered to help me make use of the material, and also because it’s durable and very lightweight. Oh, and I almost forgot — BECAUSE ITS f&%(ING CARBON FIBER! It’s the coolest-looking material on Earth! Ahem.

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. Don’t know if this is one of them, but here is one way to add some color to digital audio if you happen to have a tape deck lying around.

I’ve always been under the impression that tape-compression is introduced by the tape itself and not the head.. so of course it had to be tested with a real tape player! The thing is, you don’t actually have to record the audio to a tape and bounce it back or anything like that. Just go and purchase one of those cheap tape-to-CD-adapters used for old car stereos and route the audio through that. It’s as simple as that! Naturally you also need a tape deck… We went and stole the old cool brushed aluminum tape deck with AWESOME VU-METERS

If there’s a word for the sort of post-genre electronic music Matmos creates it might be “slippery.” Maybe it’s bending vintage ARP synth sounds into tumbling psychedelia, contact mic’ing a cow’s reproductive tract, or turning human skin into skittering IDM (don’t ask): the important thing is that there’s no way in hell you would have thought of it.

Matmos’ core duo/couple is made up of Martin (M.C.) Schmidt and Drew Daniel, who moved together a couple of years ago from San Francisco to Baltimore where they can generally be found at warehouse noise freakouts or, in Daniel’s case, teaching literature at Johns Hopkins University. You may have heard their work on Bjork’s vital records Vespertine and Medulla, for which Matmos did the production work and contributed virtuosic performances on household appliances and medical instruments.

For the debut of the second season of Electric Independence, Motherboard’s electronic music series, we visited the duo at their Baltimore studio to learn about their collaborative process and the new album they are working on, The Marriage of True Minds. At one point, Jordan ends up on the floor with ping pong balls on his eyes, listening to white noise, and feeling telepathic energy. TinySID on a 16 bit PIC

Ater successfully getting the TinySID library running on a PIC32 [1] some time ago, I recently wondered, if the 16 bit MCUs from Microchip would also be fast enough to run the code. It turned out, that they are, at least the 40 MIPS models (PIC24H and dsPIC33F).

A big hurdle is the (compared to the PIC32MX) small RAM on these chips. Since the SID tune must be loaded into RAM, only some small tunes will fit into the 8 kB of the MCU used on the Web Platform [2] I had at hand.

However, the source code [3] and binary [4] are available from Google Code. The PWM output is on IO7, and IO8 is used to switch the tune when pulled to GND.

Human Contact Synth

This is my second take on this type of device. It is played by bridging the connection between the two plates. The more contact made the higher the pitch. You can experiment with friends by making a human chain of resistance.

With a very minimal design this synth is carved into a single piece of salvaged wood with an aged looking stain. Aside from the two contact plates you have a power switch and indicator light. There is 1/4″ output so it is easy to connect to amps, effects, or recording equipment.

It is powered by an internal 9v battery that is hidden under the left plate. Although the battery will last extremely long it is important to be sure to replace all washers and the contact wire around one screw when changing the battery.
