How to create Mix Groups in Propellerhead Record
Here’s a new video showing how to create a mix group. Promoted as the DAW for musicians, Propellerhead Record nevertheless features some of the most sophisticated (and intimidating) mix routing of any multi-track recording software. While this opens the opportunity to do some very creative things in the mix interface, it also makes certain basic functions — like creating mixing sub groups — a little confusing.
That’s why we’ve put together this step-by-step video on how to create submixes in Record. It may require a few more steps than creating subgroups in other DAWs, but the visual routing component presented by the virtual rack view (ported from Reason) aides the process. As does Owen’s patient, guiding voice.

Challenge: Guess the song # 2
Time for a new challenge in guess the song. Last time we featured the mini EP “Snake Charmer” by The Edge from U2, Jah Wobble and Holger Czukay. Conny Olivetti knew the correct answer :-). Below is the cover from that rare album:
This week you are up for a slightly different challenge, the song is a collaboration between two continents – Europe and Asia. The song sample comes from a maxi-single dating back to the new wave era. DEPECHE MODE 2011 – Behind The Wheel [Vince Clarke Remix]
Here’s a remix of DM classical hit “Behind the Wheel” by no other then the synth maestro himself (and former DM member) Vince Clarke, enjoy
“Behind the Wheel” is Depeche Mode’s twentieth UK single, released on December 28, 1987, and the third single for the album Music for the Masses. Peaking at #21 in the UK charts, it hit #6 in West Germany. The B-Side is a cover of Bobby Troup’s standard “Route 66”, named after the highway of the same name. The music for the cover is similar, sometimes identical to “Behind the Wheel” (specifically during the bridge). In fact, there are several mixes that combine the two together. Martin Gore is the lead singer on “Route 66”, while David Gahan and Gore sing “Behind the Wheel” together. For The World Violation Tour in 1990, Gahan sang lead on “Route 66” instead of Gore. There is also a Beatmasters mix of both songs. “Route 66 (Beatmasters Mix)” shows up on Remixes 81 – 04
There are two music videos for “Behind the Wheel”. The original version, from Strange uses the “LP Mix”. There is also a shortened one using the 7″ “Remix” version of the song. It appears on The Videos 86-98. They are directed by Anton Corbijn. The video, shot in Italy, opens with the car used in the Never Let Me Down Again video being towed away – the video becoming an unofficial sequel to the one for the previous single.
Pencil Fields – analog gestural interface controlling Bugbrand Modular
This is a live performance by Palle Dahlstedt on a custom built instrument, using a simple pencil drawing as a gestural interface for controlling complex analog synthesis (on a Bugbrand Modular). The instrument works by creating a voltage potential field in the graphite/pencil markings on the paper using custom movable electrodes made from coins. Then, various control voltages are extracted from other points on the paper, controlling various aspects of the synthesized sound.
“A big thanks to Tom Bugs for very valuable electronics advice! The sound is recorded directly from the BugBrand Modular (with a slight reverb), and from contact mics on the pencil sharpener. There is no normal microphone, which explains the slightly awkward silence in the beginning, while I’m drawing. Recorded at the second performance (of two), May 6th, 2011, Gothenburg, Sweden. Concert arranged by Levande Musik (www.levandemusik.org) This work is part of the research project Creative Performance at University of Gothenburg, funded by the Swedish Research Council.”

Out via Eagle Rock Entertainment on DVD and Blu-ray on May 31 is “Ride Rise Roar”, a documentary film detailing the creative process of David Byrne shot over the course of his ’08/’09 “Songs of David Byrne & Brian Eno” tour.
“Ride Rise Roar” combines exclusive behind-the-scenes footage with onstage action from Byrne’s recent world tour including band audition footage, rehearsals and interviews with Byrne and the key players in his group. The film also explores the process behind the creation of the live show. The track list spans Byrne’s career, from his early CBGB days to his pioneering work with Brian Eno.

David Byrne (born May 14, 1952) is a Scottish-born musician and artist most associated with his role as a founding member and principal songwriter of the American new wave band Talking Heads, which was active between 1975 and 1991. Since then, Byrne has released his own solo recordings and worked with various media including film, photography, opera, and non-fiction. He has received Grammy, Oscar, and Golden Globe awards and been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

microGothar Duo in dual synth mode. Starting out with the same sound/sequence selected for both synth 1 and synth 2. The sequence and sound in synth 2 are then tweaked to differ from synth 1.
Short noodlings on the Elka Synthex
The Synthex is a very lush sounding classic analog 8 voice synthesizer. Later versions implemented basic MIDI functions. It has 30 knobs, 6 sliders, 80 switches and a joystick. Powerful sounds with 2 oscillators per note, separate envelope generators, chorus and even a sequencer! The use of stable DCO’s (digitally controlled analog oscillators) and oscillator cross modulation of Pulse Width and a multimode filter made it unique in its time.
There is a cool joystick that replaces traditional pitch/mod wheels and allows for greater variable real-time control over the two LFOs, oscillator and filter modulation. The 6 sliders beside the joystick assign what (LFO, osc and filter) goes to the joystick. Voices can also be layered or split across the keyboard. Other great features include the onboard digital Ring-Modulator, Chorus effect and Dual or Layer modes available. And also a four-track sequencer rounds out this synths host of features. Two of it’s tracks can output MIDI data.

A series of short noodlings on my Elka Synthex, all using the brilliant onboard sequencer. No other synths or effects are used. One track also features my E-Mu Drumulator, which the Synthex sequencer is sync’d to (somewhat unpredictably) via trigger pulses.
