Bob Moog on analog synths
Bob Moog explaining the aspects of the analog synthesizer by using the analog board of the Minimoog Voyager
The story of Cybernetic Serendipity Music
The Institute of Contemporary Arts & The Vinyl Factory present Cybernetic Serendipity Music, the world’s first compilation of electronic music, reissued on vinyl for the first time since it was originally released as part of the ICA’s groundbreaking robotics exhibition Cybernetic Serendipity in 1968.

“Protostar”: Koushion iPad sequencer, Virus C, MS2000, Supernova, Blofeld
First recording with iOS sequencer Koushion. Drone from the Waldorf Blofeld, arps from MS2000BR, Virus C and Supernova II. Plus super-pads and subspace whistles from the Supernova. Recorded live with no overdubs.
Koushion is a flexible step sequencer for your iPad. Like a traditional step sequencer, Koushion lets you program note patterns that are triggered in time with a MIDI clock (either an external source, or a configurable built-in one). But Koushion doesn’t stop at what’s already been accomplished by its hardware predecessors. With 16 layers, each containing 8 scenes of 16 steps (that’s 2048 steps!), Koushion provides plenty of room for you to express your creativity. Each layer has customizable settings such as looping mode, MIDI channel, and musical key.
Koushion doesn’t just work with expensive MIDI hardware, but also integrates with any of the hundreds of CoreMIDI-enabled synthesizer apps. Whether you use it as part of your existing studio setup, on stage, or as a piece of your self-contained iPad studio, you’ll never run out of sounds to explore, thanks to the iPad’s powerful inter-app MIDI system.
Deep dive in Moog Prodigy Mods
The Prodigy was an entry-level monosynth from Moog, which has since become a very popular and widely used Bass-synth in techno and electronic music. It was designed as an affordable dual-oscillator synth. It was, however, designed without any help from Bob Moog himself. But that didn’t stop the Prodigy from becoming an excellent analog synth!
Its simple yet effective design employs two voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) with saw, triangle and pulse waveforms…all classic analog stuff! There’s also a genuine Moog 24dB / octave lowpass filter (emphasis), A/D/S envelope generator, and LFO with square or triangle waveforms and routing to the VCF, VCO or both! Even Portamento, Pitch and Mod wheels. To save money there are no highly flexible modulation routings, no on-board sequencers or arpeggiators, and a simple 32 note keyboard.
Background video description:
Hello Everyone this is another update on the mods I have been performing inside a Prodigy and thought I would share.
As always, thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
All the best,
Jareth

Littlebits Synth Pro Kit
Extra connectivity to your Korg Synth Kit – USB Audio and MIDI and CV
Korg and Littlebits spiced up the Christmas gift givers in 2013 with the Littlebits Korg Synth Kit – a bunch of Littlebits modules with a couple of Oscillators, Filter, Delay, Sequencer, Mixer, Envelope, random generator and some splitters. Some people scoffed – “its just a toy!” they said. And its true it is, but I dont remember having many toys that were as fun.
Only thing was, as with the Monotron range from Korg – it was a bit of a closed system – although in true littlebits spirit, people had DIYed a few ways to integrate into existing setups.
Now Littlebits and Korg have release the Synth Pro Kit – this adds connectivity options a plenty.
- USB/Audio
- USB/MIDI
- 2X CV I/O (V/oct and Hz/V)
- 2x USB cables
- 2x Mounting boards
- 1x MIDI cable adapter
We asked our resident portable music creation expert Gaz Williams to take a look at the kit and see what possibilities it opened up.
One thing that did come up was that while in MIDI control the Osc were nicely tracking, but when controlling over CV, the scaling was quite fernicketty and not terribly accurate over an octave range. You could get it roughly in scale. Each oscillator needs to be setup and then tuning them play accurately together was not so easy
Priced at $139 – individual components are available – see Littlebits website for details.
Check out the new SidTracker 64 Preview video
Available in appstore very soon!
SidTracker64 is the ultimate chiptune production package tool for the iPad. It emulates the SID sound chip from the dominating home computer of the 80s – The Commodore 64.
Get started immediately with the bundled songs and sounds in various styles, from old skool bleeps n blips to new school with multi speed and advanced table editing. Explore, remix and make new songs based on the old classics c64 game tracks “Commando” by Rob Hubbard or “Blood Money” by Fredrik Segerfalk, and the brand new youtube remix hit of the “True Survivor” Kung Fury soundtrack, all included in the app.
SidTracker64 is a retro-style music creation tool and synthesizer combined with modern features such as midi keyboard and controller input, Audiobus 2 and Inter App Audio for recording in your favourite DAW-app. Midi clock in lets you sync to other apps and hardware drum machines and synthesizers, such as the Elektron Analog Four.
SidTracker 64 can be used for live looping, making complete songs, and the minimum latency makes it suitable for live use. Export your music to Dropbox and e-mail as audio or .sid and even .prg files which you can run on a real Commodore 64.
Editing is based on hands on touch interaction or midi input instead of the hardcore style of direct data editing. Record live to a metronome or input notes step-style. Real SID-composing has never been simpler and more fun!
