Shruti Box – new Kontakt instrument library featuring traditional drones and a shruti-sizer.
Cinematique Instruments has announced Shruti Box, a Kontakt instrument library featuring traditional drones and a shruti-sizer.
The Shruti Box is a traditional Indian instrument which works on a system of bellows. It is a keyless version of the harmonium, which was invented for the specifc purpose of producing drone sounds. On the front it has 12 valves to control the pitch. The instrument is generally used to accompany other instruments in rehearsal sessions or concerts of classical Indian music. But the shruti box is enjoying a renaissance in the West amongst traditional and contemporary musicians who are using it for a range of different styles.
We carefully sampled the individual notes, even the noises which are produced by the bellow and paid special attention to capture the unique character of a Shruti Box which can described as rough and vibrant. Traditionally the Shruti Box has a range of 13 notes which we expanded up to 3 full octaves. In order to get a realistic Shruti sound and enrich the sound with vividness we provided two kinds of pump action which can be switched on separately. We also added distortion, chorus and a rotary simulation to shape the sound as well as a special sustain mode which will play an endless drone. All these features are giving the Shruti Box nice options to shape the sound.
But that’s not all! We thought how could we push the Shruti Box forward to much more versatility? And that’s why invented the Shruti-Sizer:
If you turn around the Shruti Box you are getting to a complete different interface which has nothing to do with the traditionally Shruti Box. It reminds you to an old synthesizer look with knobs, symbols and an oscilloscope. It is a complex LFO modulation section. You can modulate several parameter by four different wave forms with a variable speed. It puts the Shruti Box to another level and lets you create individual pad sounds an even constantly evolving rhythmic textures.The result of it all is a unique instrument and a perfect supplement to the Cinematique Instruments family.

Chronicling the history of modular synths in Japan
Chronicling the history of modular synths in Japan from the 1970s to the new generation of Japanese modular synth enthusiasts, details below:
We’re a small team of passionate independent filmmakers producing a documentary about the current resurgence of interest in modular synthesizers in Japan, featuring interviews with some of the enthusiasts, manufacturers and artists in the growing scene, as well as some of the out-of-this-world sounds being produced in Japan right now.
Though not as immediately recognized as their Moog and Buchla cousins, large Japanese musical instrument manufacturers such as Roland and Korg produced their own unique takes on modular and semi-modular synthesizers back in the mid-to-late 1970s.
In addition to covering some of these influential synths from the past, we will be examining the relative disappearance of modular synthesizers in Japan after domestic production halted, and the corresponding blossoming of the DIY hardware/synth scene which continues to this day.
Lastly, we will be shining a spotlight on the growing modular synthesizer movement that is taking Japan by storm as access to both European and North American modules increases. We’re also looking to cover the exciting development of the first Japanese-manufactured commercial modular synthesizers in many decades. We’re looking to thoroughly document the 2014 Tokyo Festival of Modular, a two-day extravaganza with its finger on the pulse of the modular synthesizer scene.
Erasure’s new album and WW tour
Erasure have announced details of their brand new forthcoming album, “The Violet Flame“, out on September 23, 2014. Recorded in New York and London and produced by Richard X, “The Violet Flame” follows 2013’s “Snow Globe”, and is the band’s 16th studio album release. The first single from the 10-track album will be released in mid July.
The band is also prepping a world tour, beginning in Miami on September 12, and including a special Halloween show at The Palms in Las Vegas and two New Year’s Eve shows at New York’s Terminal 5 on December 30 and 31.
Tickets for ‘The Violet Flame’ tour are on sale from 30th May (UK & Europe) and 7th June (North America).

Scape iPad by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers – Sound check
This is a track that was made using the Scape iPad app by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers. The track is made up of three recordings. The parameters were manipulated in real time during recording. The recordings were edited and manipulated in various ways for the sake of the composition. For example, some parts were slowed down, others were reversed. Some outboard effects were used in post production.

The Swynx is a sync box that converts incoming MIDI messages to MIDI clock, DIN sync, CR-78 clock, and Analog clocks. In addition, the Swynx provides the ability to swing the timing of all these clock outputs and select different time signatures in real-time with the front panel controls, and can also act as a programmer for the Roland CR-78.
Once you try it in your setup, you will realize just what you’ve been missing. For instance, many DIN sync devices do not provide a built-in swing function. And many MIDI sequencers and drum machines suffer from poor implementation of swing, preventing changes to be made live, or only providing swing for 4/4 patterns. Quite a few MIDI sequencers don’t offer any swing function, including our own 777 and Mobius products. Now you can apply swing to any MIDI sequencer, and select new time signatures as well.
Need to sync your analog sequencer or arpeggiator with MIDI gear? No problem! Not only can you do so, but now you can swing the timing of those devices as well. You can even use the analog clock output to Gate the envelopes in a synthesizer. The clock duty cycle is 50% of a note duration.
If you are a Roland CR-78 owner, you may have realized finding a WS-1 or TS-1 to program the CR-78 is next to impossible. The Swynx can replicate the programming capabilities of these units, plus provide sync to MIDI, and realtime swing adjustment. The ability to add swing to the CR-78’s preset patterns alone will breathe new life into this old friend.
The Swing value is accurate to 0.5% providing much more control resolution than is typically found in sequencers and drum machines.
The Swynx provides 12 different time signatures to choose from. Some time signatures are duplicate, but provide different shuffle patterns for that time signature. Time signatures include 9/8, 7/8, 6/8, 5/8, 2/4, 4/4, 8/4, 3/4, and 6/4. A universal power supply is provided with each unit, allowing the Swynx to be used anywhere in the world.
