Time machine: SOLTON PROGRAMMER 24 Drum Machine Arranger 1985
Time for another retro machine to be featured, this time it is the classic Solton drum machine:
The Solton Programmer 24 is a programmable drum machine with 8-bit samples and integrated arranger, which uses analog sounds (bass, solo synth). It also has a polyphonic string-ensemble and polyphonic organ.
You can program your grooves with bass line and solo synth! It was produced in Italy in 1985 by Ketron. It has a tight timing, single outputs and MIDI. All you hear in this video is a Solton Programmer 24.
The Solton Programmer is heard on the Italo-Disco single “Fotonovela” from Ivan. A great little box for eighties music!

LEL – new sampled recreation of the Soviet 8-bit sampled drum machine
Rhythmic Robot has released LEL, a sampled recreation of the Soviet 8-bit sampled drum machine, the Lel’ PSR.
The hardware Lel’ was programmable but shipped with 32 onboard preset rhythms which made use of its 12 8-bit samples. It also featured a useful Accent control for introducing variation into programmed and preset rhythms.
LEL recreates both the 12 samples and the 32 preset rhythms, which have been time-sliced to sync automatically to the host DAW’s tempo. They can be triggered by MIDI note or from the front panel of the Lel itself. All preset rhythms are freely combinable and can be “stacked” to create new polyrhythms. In addition to pan and level controls for each of the kit pieces, the unit also features an effects block with bit-crushing, saturation, drive distortion and compression modules.
A front-panel switch swaps the graphics between authentic Cyrillic lettering and an English translation.
The Lel sound is 8-bit, with short, gritty samples. It suits a wide variety of modern musical styles, while the preset rhythms include not only staples such as Rock, Reggae and Heavy Metal, but also authentic Russian styles such as Kazachok and Lezginka.

Time machine: MULTIVOX RHYTHM ACE FR-3 | Vintage Rhythm Box
This is a quite rare little analog rhythm box from 1979. The features are nothing special, but the sound overall is much better than other rhythm boxes of that era. It has a deep bassdrum and a crispy snare.
It’s from MULTIVOX, not ACE Electronics (former Roland). Before the Multivox came along, Ace Electronics made several rhythm boxes which are also called “Rhythm Ace”. These have nothing to do with the Multivox. The mechanical hardware looks to me like old Korg Minipops units. Was Korg involved? 😉
All rhythms are combinable. I played the Multivox with a little reverb.

Oberheim DX modified for double sounds
This DX has a toggle switch for each voice, allowing choosing between two different samples for each. The regular 2764 EPROMs were replaced with 27128 types. Some relatively minor circuit board mods were required.
The DX was a lighter version of the classic DMX drum machine. In fact its look, features and programming method are basically the same as the DMX. The DX has individual tuning knobs for the drum tones and an external trigger input. Its sounds are sampled recordings of actual instruments. The DX only has 18 drum sounds and the DMX has 24. Both drum machines have a number of human like feel effects such as a great swing function, rolls, flams and other weird time signatures and grooves. Best of all it’s easy to operate. There are also 6 individual outputs like the DMX for easing studio use.
