Video Wave Form Generator modules and the concepts of modular video synthesis

November 25, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Video Wave Form Generator modules and the concepts of modular video synthesis

lzxindustries has shared a video that introduces the video oscillator

Conceptualizing the use of a Voltage Controlled Oscillator as an image generation tool is difficult. This demo attempts to explain a basic pattern synthesis technique using 3 Video Wave Form Generator modules and frequency modulation to generate a monochrome, animated video pattern.

LZX makes a line of Eurorack format modular video synthesizer modules, designed for creating and manipulating video and images.

Jam with the monophonic synthesizer Kraftzwerg

“A 4 Voice!!!-Jam with the monophonic synthesizer Kraftzwerg

4 “Midi to CV”-Tracks were used for controlling the 3 Oscillators individually.

The 1st Midi-Track controls the Frequency of Oscillator 1 and sends the appropriate Trigger Signal to Envelope 1. Env. 1 is connected with the Filter.

The 2nd Midi-Track contains also Frequency- and Trigger-Signals. But this ones controls Osc. 2.
Osc 2 is connected to the VCA who is controlled by the Envelope 2.
This produces the higher Percussive Effects.

The 3rd Midi-Track sends the Frequency (Pitch) to Osc. 3.
Because the Kraftzwerg has not more Envelopes or Mixers left, Osc. 3
is modulated by the Autofilter of Ableton Live with a Sample&Hold.
This Midi-Track plays the lower Bassline.

The 4th Midi Track contains very short Frequency-Voltages for Osc. 3. This Notes plays the higher Melody.

Due to the fact that Osc. 3 is processed by a Reverb and a Delay and the Pitch changements are very short, you got the impression of hearing a duophonic Melody sorting out from Oscillator 3!

Also a separate Midi Track was recorded with CC-Datas from the Kaosspad.
The Kaosspad is processing OSC 1 and 2 from the Kraftzwerg nearly like a random-processor.

I added also some connections from both LFO’s to the Oscillator 1 and 2.”

“Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider Go!!!” is the third single taken from Trentemøller’s acclaimed new album “Into The Great Wide Yonder”. With its thrilling guitars and blazing synths “Silver Surfer…” is the rockiest track off the album and comes with remixes by Anders Trentemøller, Andrew Weatherall and Lulu Rouge (DJ T.O.M. and Buda).

The fantastic live-video has been recorded at the main stage of the Roskilde festival in summer 2009. Trentemøller was invited to arrange a special show for the biggest European summer festival which led to an extraoerdinary and unique performance which remains unforgotten by “50.000 people floating 10 cm above the ground”. The video is one of twelve music videos produced for Clear Notice’s debut release, Enter Calico – available on Bandcamp, Amazon and iTunes as an audio album and iPad App. More videos from the release are available on the Clear Notice Vimeo channel.

About the music, Stretta (Matthew Davidson) notes:

I like to think that if you’re going to create something within the field of electronic music, you should offer an experience that can’t be achieved though other means.

For example, Pixar makes movies about talking fish, robots in love, and a rat that cooks in a restaurant kitchen. Arguably, they’re telling stories that almost have to be realized with computer animation.

So, this is music that, I believe, has to be realized synthetically.
