POKEY.synth demo
Using only the pokey.synth module for sound source. I’m also running the uLFO sine wave through the Aux input to demonstrate the SR function.
I’m using my uStep/Short Bus to trigger Envelators which are outputing CV Into the “vol” input on the Pokey. The Pokey module has 2 built in VCA’s!
which is pretty awesome! Z8000 is also being clocked via Short Bus/uStep which is controlling pitch for pokey osc 1 & 2, uLFO pitch, SR CV (on pokey) and Wave CV on Pokey.

Fruity Loops in your iPhone

Following companies like Korg and Propellerheads developing IOS version of legacy products a version of Fruity Loops for IOS is being developed to be used on iPhones and iPads. No information is available when it will be launched. FL Studio Mobile is being developed by a third party. Read more here.
Legacy computer based synthesizers
If you wanted to use digital synthesis in the early 80s but could not afford a Fairlight or a Synclavier then the Alpha Syntauri was one of few alternatives.
The Alpha Syntauri was the flagship digital synthesizer produced by the Syntauri corporation in 1980. This short clip gives an overview of a unit I originally purchased in 1982, serial #A003184. The synthesis hardware engine is provided by the Mountain Computer synthesizer board set that mounted into bus slots within the Apple II. They supported 8 channels of 8-bit stereo audio. AlphaPlus is Syntauri’s software application demonstrated here.
8-bit Trip – the whole story
If you’ve not seen the 8-bit Trip by Rymdreglage please enjoy:
And here’s how they did it – spending 1500h building lego, taking stills… Clearly a labour of love by the Rymdreglage guys.

Reaktor Sampler Pack
Peter Dines of Reaktor Tips has released the Reaktor Sampler Pack, a collection three granular sampling instruments for Native Instruments Reaktor.
Reaktor Sampler Pack
- Frame 2, a simple looping sampler designed for live control of loop points and other parameters.
- Loupe, a polyphonic looping slicer for quickly mapping arbitrary (that is, non-beatsliced) sections of a sample to different MIDI keys.
- Mirage, a granular sampler inspired by the music of Tim Hecker, Peter’s laziness, and his disorganization (those are Peter’s words…).
Frame 2 is available as a free download, Loupe and Mirage are $15 USD each. A bundle of Loupe and Mirage is available for $22.50 USD until the end of February, 2011.

Electronic Sackbut Synthesizer
Hugh LeCaine of Ottawa created the Electronic Sackbut Synthesizer in his home studio over a period of three years from 1945 to 1948. This synthesizer is the first voltage-controlled synthesizer ever built, preceding the manufacture of commercial synthesizers by twenty years. Le Caine, a nuclear physicist with the National Research Council, was passionate about music. He was concerned that the musical notes produced by electronic instruments in the 1930s, such as the Hammond Organ and the Morse Robb Wave Organs, lacked a certain expressivity. Determined to shape technology for the needs of the musician and expand the possibilities of musical sound he built a synthesizer that allows for complex variations in pitch and tone. This, LeCaine achieved, through the innovative use of voltage control. The technique provides an automatic background voltage that can remain stable or be altered through the manipulation of the knobs and keyboard. The keys are sensitive to a vertical pressure that controls the volume and a lateral pressure that changes the pitch. In this way the musician can simultaneously manipulate the volume, pitch, and timbre of each note and produce gradual transitions from one sound to the next. The rudimentary appearance of the synthesizer its three legs made of crossed pieces of scrap wood and with instructions penciled onto its surface camouflages the brilliant concept behind this invention. LeCaine’s Electronic Sackbut Synthesizer is the precursor of today’s electronic instruments.

Korg Delta electronic and cosmetic repairs
Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com shows the insides of a Korg Delta and explains the overview of operation, and plays a few sounds to give a feel for this great synth. The delta is all knobs and sliders. And a joystick that can both be set for a bend amount and filter modulation amount on the x axis. The y is modulation up and noise mod down. Made in 1979 along with the Lambda and Sigma. Lambda is a fully polyphonic machine with simpler controls but 3X the oscillators and dividers! Both are great to have around! The sigma is a monosynth with a very useful performance interface. I’ll try to cover these in another video soon!
