Music For 16 Futurist Noise Intoners

March 17, 2014 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Music For 16 Futurist Noise Intoners

Performa is delighted to present “Music For 16 Futurist Noise Intoners,” an evening-length concert of original scores and newly commissioned compositions for the intonarumori, or “noise-intoners” As part of its celebration of the 100th anniversary of Italian Futurism, the Performa 09 biennial, in collaboration with the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) and SFMOMA, has invited Luciano Chessa to direct a reconstruction project to produce accurate replicas the legendary instruments (8 noise families of 1-3 instruments each, in various registers) that Russolo built in Milan in the summer of 1913. As the first instruments capable of creating and manipulating noises through entirely mechanical processes, the intonarumori can be considered to be the original analog synthesizer, and the ancestors to the latest electronic synthesizers used today.

With Blixa Bargeld, John Butcher, Luciano Chessa, Joan La Barbara, Nick Hallett, Pauline Oliveros, Mike Patton, Anat Pick, Elliott Sharp, Ulrich Krieger, Jennifer Walshe with Tony Conrad, Ghostigital with Skuli Sverrison, Finboggi Petursson, and Casper Electronics.

Chessa will present the first modern live performances of two early Futurist pieces—the legendary fragment from Russolo’s spooky “Risveglio di una città” (1913), and “La pioggia nel pineto antidannunziana,” a newly-discovered 1916 piece for intonarumori and “Words in Freedom” by Futurist playwright and poet Paolo Buzzi–as well as “L’acoustique ivrese”, his brand new composition for 16 intonarumori and voice on a poem also by Buzzi. An incredible group of musicians and composers from the experimental music world—including Einstuerzende Neubauten frontman and Nick Cave collaborator Blixa Bargeld, avant-garde saxophonist John Butcher, Deep Listening pioneer Pauline Oliveros, Faith No More and Mr. Bungle vocalist Mike Patton, sound and text-based performer Anat Pick, avant-garde musician Elliott Sharp, and composer and vocalist Jennifer Walshe collaborating with composer and film/video artist Tony Conrad, among others—have been commissioned by Performa to create and perform brand new compositions for the instruments.

A Performa Commission with SFMOMA and EMPAC. Produced and presented by Performa. Curated by Luciano Chessa with Esa Nickle. Thanks to AIR, Art International Radio and the Clocktower Gallery for rehearsal spaces

Wonky Toys – sound collection feat. wonkystep, streetbass, aquacrunk or purple sound

March 14, 2014 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Wonky Toys – sound collection feat. wonkystep, streetbass, aquacrunk or purple sound

Ueberschall announces the availability of Wonky Toys.

Elastik Inspire series brings you Wonky Toys, a sound collection that captures the character and mood of sub-genres such as wonkystep, streetbass, aquacrunk or purple sound. Wonky Toys includes drum and percussion loops to give you a complex, and sometimes unusual, rhythmic feel in a meld of hip hop and dubstep influences. Pre-mixed loops and single track drum recordings as well as additional drum mixes processed for a lo-fi and dirty sound will get you started while you can build your track with a range of dark and disturbed instrument loops and sound FX. Instruments include synth-based basses, chords, leads, arps, pads and FX while there are also more conventional instruments such as guitars, brass and strings to colour your sound. A series of sound FX, processed vocal samples, a huge variety of percussion and 8-bit sounds round out the collection giving you all you need to start your next wonky cut.

Complex rhythms with a dark and dirty edge

This 1.14 GB-Library does not contain conventional construction kits. Rather, Wonky Toys is a pool of ideas consisting of 445 loops to be freely combined. So to speak, this library is a single huge construction kit.

The content has been carefully edited for modern productions with high standards while meeting high demands to flexibility at the same time. The soundbanks modular inspire structure allows the content to be used in various productions, from film dubbing, web and apps to other music projects. In addition, the library offers all samples to create authentic styles – delivered in highest quality as you can expect from Ueberschall.

Unsettling sounds to define the mood.

Ueberschalls Elastik Inspire Series redefines the workflow when using loop libraries. All loops and tonal phrases of Wonky Toys and all other Inspire products will match perfectly to each other, even across different genres. Each sample is automatically stretched and fitted to the current song tempo. Using Ueberschall‘s Elastik 2 player and its elaborated tagging-system enables you to create new tracks almost on the fly – fast, easy and clearly laid out.

In addition, you may instantly exchange loops of the same instrument-group using the intelligent random-replacement-function. All Inspire Libraries contain so-called Inspire Kits. These kits offer a combination of instruments, which can then be varied immediately using the random function.The results are always perfectly matched as all samples of the Elastik Inspire-series are carefully adjusted and designed for this purpose. This leads to endless new ideas and inspiration for millions of new tracks.
The perfect mix of hip hop and dubstep influences

The Elastik player is ideal for loop-based music production. All loops in Wonky Toys can be customized with just a few clicks to match any existing projects in speed and pitch. The browser manages all installed Elastik libraries together, so you have all the available loops in instant access. This means that not only loops of one, but all installed Elastik libraries can be combined with each other. Effects such as Resample, Reverse, Formant and multimode filters also allow effective editing of the loops for creative sound design.

Arturia MiniBrute SE – Live demo from Messe

March 13, 2014 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Arturia MiniBrute SE – Live demo from Messe

)

Here’s a presentation of the MiniBrute SE from Arturia at the Musikmesse 2014.

Arturia’s red-hot MiniBrute Analog Synthesizer set the electronic musical instrument world alight immediately upon its introduction in 2012. Indeed, it rapidly reset the price/performance ratio benchmark when successfully soaring through the subtractive synthesis sound barrier while singlehandedly setting a new standard for what a hardware synthesizer should be. Hot on its heels comes a ‘special edition’ that is very special indeed. MiniBrute SE shares the same physical footprint as the original MiniBrute, but builds upon this amazingly compact and bijou analogue monosynth in both looks and features.

Although a sturdy and stylish brushed aluminium casing with wooden sides surely make MiniBrute SE stand out from the analogue crowd, skin-deep good looks are not the be and end all here, however, as added functionality runs deeper still. An all-new step SEQUENCER elegantly expands playing options with the MiniBrute SE — six Pattern sequences with up to 64 steps each to create multiple musical phrases, to be precise. Yet it is capable of so much more than simply replaying pre- programmed Pattern sequences ad infinitum. Users can create new musical phrases from existing ones by changing the playback Mode, Gate Len (timing), and Swing settings in realtime from the clearly labelled front panel — perfect for inspiring new musical ideas and creating exciting live performances on the fly.

)
MiniBrute SE is proof positive that the original MiniBrute was no fly-by-night success story. A pure analogue signal path and attractive features like a multi-wave OSCILLATOR and Sub Osc combined with a huge-sounding Steiner-Parker multimode FILTER (fittingly revised by Nyle Steiner himself) and wide-ranging modulation capabilities confirm that MiniBrute SE continues to innovate while breathing new life into recordings and stage performances. Add fantastic features like Ultrasaw (generating shimmering sawtooth waveforms), Metalizer (adding extreme triangle waveform-induced harmonics), LFO (with sample and hold), and full USB/MIDI/CV connectivity into the musical mix, and what have you got? A killer-sounding, step sequencing-capable synth with looks to die for, that’s what!

Designed for the analogue purist with a creative spirit in mind, MiniBrute SE successfully squeezes an amazing amount of creative options into its eye-catching, exceptionally portable design. The truly hands-on artistic appeal of subtractive synthesis and supreme step sequencing are alive and kicking here — harder than ever! Indeed, it’s all about analogue goodness — all gain and no pain!

MESSE 2014: Waldorf Striechfett String Machine Demo

March 13, 2014 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on MESSE 2014: Waldorf Striechfett String Machine Demo

)

Waldorf Striechfett String Machine Demo First listen

Waldorf has announced Streichfett, a new hardware synth that combines the best of the now extinct species of String Synthesizers of the 70s and early 80s. Its dual sound engine features a fully polyphonic strings section and a monophonic solo section, which is essential for recreating how adult movies sounded thirty years ago(!). The Ensemble Effect handles lubrication of the String Section, while the Effects section adds adjustable Phaser or Reverb. Alternatively, the Effect section can be used to animate the strings registration, allowing spectacular sound morphs.

The Solo Section offset presets named Bass, E-Piano or Clavi, and just like in your typical string machine, the sound has little to do with that name. Instead, these are shimmering and slightly percussive sounds that blend well with the string section.

Although the User Interface is simple and easy to comprehend, it controls a rather complex sound engine which is capable to delivers rich and creamy pads unlike any other instrument.

Twelve patches can be stored and selected in the Memory section, USB and MIDI are of course on board.

Specifications:

  • Fully polyphonic Strings Section with Violin, Viola, Cello, Brass, Organ and Choir presets.
  • 2’nd Layer with Violin/Viola Voicing.
