New release: Greenhouse – the Synplant ReFill!

April 26, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on New release: Greenhouse – the Synplant ReFill!

“Greenhouse” is an awesome ReFill which is based on samples coming from the popular Synplant software synthesizer which is without any doubt one of the most innovative plugins of recent years. 125+ combinator patches provide an insight into the great and highly characterful sound capabilities Synplant has to offer. Greenhouse patches sound deep and murky, sometimes wishful and dreamy, but overall atmospheric and full of the typical and widely acclaimed Synplant character… In addition, some “One-Shot-FX” kits are included to let you produce some glitchy electro beats. The 24 bit samples were recorded through an analog mixing console to bring the “real world” flavour into our digital world – ready-to-use within this ReFill. And let´s not forget about he 35+ drum samples (as well as 11 Rex files highly processed with additional EQing, compressing…) from the MicroTonic PlugIn which has been recorded the same way as the Synplant samples…

Greenhouse Contents:

– 129 combinator patches full of the typical and widely acclaimed Synplant character.

– Deep, murky, evil but also wishful and dreamy are the main keywords.

– 114 NNXT patches containing the basic sounds which were used for the combinators, 7 Redrum kits.

– 432 Synplant samples, 392 MB uncompressed.

– 35+ drum samples & 11 Rex loops coming from the MicroTonic PlugIn.

A variation on the patch used for Buchla Rhythm Study-3c only all the voltage controls are slower and longer. all self-generating except for a few times where I tweak the eg (281e). oh yeah, a ton of reverb. for a higher resolution audio track go to: soundcloud.com/user7621213/buchla-random-ambience-1

The Far and Brilliant Night

The Far and Brilliant Night explores the psychological power of combined aural and visual symbolism. Perhaps there are certain classes of sounds and images which are imprinted on our genetic memories, or which exist in our collective unconscious. They may stir within us memories from ancient times, from before our birth, or even from before the origin of our species. But far from creating a universal experience, the primitive and deep associations that these sounds and images invoke may clash with or intensify each individual’s current emotions, thoughts, and anxieties, creating a unique and unpredictable experience for each person.

The Far and Brilliant Night in its current version premiered at a concert held in conjunction with the 1992 International Computer Music Conference in San Jose, California. Other performances include the International Symposium on Electronic Art in Montreal, the Quandt Foundation Transatlantic Conference, and the Northwest Electroacoustic Music Festival.

In these performances the Lightning was performed by percussionist Mark Goldstein. Designed by synthesizer pioneer Don Buchla, the Lightning is a specialized controller that senses the movement of hands in space and transforms this information into MIDI signals for control of electronic musical instrumentation. The device senses a wide range of movements including conducting, percussion, and dance. Its primary function in this work is to perform changes in the parameters of real-time computer algorithms. The algorithms in turn control signal processing routines that transform triggered digital recordings and live vocal sounds into expressive music.

Extremly long evolving drones/soundscapes and on interchangeable synth loops

April 16, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Extremly long evolving drones/soundscapes and on interchangeable synth loops

LoopBased has introduced Ambivalence – a new sound pack with the focus on extremly long evolving drones/soundscapes and on interchangeable synth loops for music styles like Electronica, Chillout, Ambient and as well for cinematic sound tracks.

Features:

  • Over 1 GB content in 24 Bit/44.1 Khz WAV format, normalized and free of DC offset.
  • Includes 32 long drones and soundscapes, 32 “Main Loops”, 133 “Loop Elements”.
  • The drones and soundscapes are 16, 32 or 64 bars long (at 120 BPM), so most of them have a length of more than one or two minutes. These long samples have only short fade outs at the end to give you the freedom to determine the optimal release times for your productions within your sampler or your DAW software on your own.
  • All loops are at 120 BPM, 4 or 8 bars long and are carefully edited for seemless looping without glitches.
  • The “Main Loops” are small, but complex musical miniatures, consisting of vintage synth lines, modulated analogue step sequences and arpeggios, sweeping pads, atonal fx loops and various other sounds that are mixed together with different levels and pannings.
  • The so called “Loop Elements” are looped, isolated layers from the “Main Loops”, but they are centered and at full level now. Each “Loop Element” again consists of several layers on its own. Most of these “Loop Elements” are interchangeable among themselves. This allows you to create 1001 new loop variations or to build up an arrangement progression for the “Main Loops”.

Ambivalence is available now for 15 EUR.

In Search of the Unsound, Part II

The Pleasure of Fear: Horror at Unsound

Horror is an essential element in modern music that aspires to break sonic boundaries and generate new spaces for expression and emotions. The Polish Unsound festival, celebrated every autumn in the cold climate of Kraków, knows that all to well, and that’s why the 2010 edition had the concept of horror as its central theme, with artists such as Ben Frost and Demdike Stare. The PlayTV cameras were there and didn’t only record the performances at Unsound. We went with the intention of exploring horror’s place in music, led by journalist Philip Sherburne, our guide from place to place, across artist to artist, and who led our reflections through the labyrinth of emotions that is Unsound.
