Dual Synth Tech Test 01
Background data:
I build up a one of a kind Buchla format “Dual Synth Tech” module.
Basically I made a Buchla style panel based around 2x Synthesis Technology “Eurorack” modules:
1x E560 Deflector Shield
1x E580 Resampling Mini Delay
This is a video of my 1st test of the final module . . . . this is just a “fun test” as I just hopped through a few different settings at random.
Mostly focusing on the “Delay” and “Tap” outputs of the E580, which gives the nice strong stereo effect . . . so when you hear the Frequency Shifting (briefly) of the E560, you are only hearing the mono “Up” output.
Honestly, this combo of modules works and sounds AMAZING with the Buchla . . . I was really blown away – audio levels match great, and CV control works nice especially when using a Control Voltage Processor (like the Verbos 254).
Experimental: Magnetovore Presents the Magnetic Cello
The Magnetic Cello is an analog electronic musical instrument created by Cal Poly SLO student David Levi. After three years of development, the finished instrument is available for reservation for its summer 2012 release. Those who reserve a Magnetic Cello now will have the first opportunity to own the instrument.

Playing the Magnetic Cello:
- Shape volume using a magnetic bow. Moving the bow in space around the copper coil induces an electrical signal to magnetically articulate the instrument.
- Control pitch by pressing down on an electrically resistive ribbon. This ribbon, mounted to the neck of the instrument, is continuous and can perform the same glissando and vibrato of a traditional stringed instrument.
- Select strings by rolling your right thumb. With a small switch mounted on the bow under the right thumb, a musician can instantly switch strings.

World Sound Mix – based on the uploaded sounds on Freesound.org
The installation and sound mix project:
“World Sound Mix for BankART LIFE3″ is a sound visual installation, generating new soundscape around the world. This work continues mixing the sounds at selected two points somewhere in the world from the database of huge quantities of environment sounds and generating new soundscape.
For this exhibition, we set up a magic box that resonates mixed soundscape in Sapporo and somewhere in the world. During the exhibition, a globe in the box keeps turning and resonating sounds in real time.
About sounds data:
World Sound Mix is based on a sound database from Freesound project, its sounds have been recorded and gathered by sound hunters around the world. The use of sound data is under the CreativeCommons Sampling+ 1.0 License. By the username and “freesound sound ID” shown on the globe, listener can refer to original content.

“Paint2Sound is a neat little free application for converting any .jpg or .bmp image or any picture you care to draw/paint, into a soundscape. Each pixel row represents a frequency band. The application synthesizes sine waves for each pixel row with an instantaneous amplitude determined by the brightness of each pixel in the pixel row, and then sums together all the sine waves. There is user control over various parameters like sample rate, sound duration, how frequencies are distributed across the pixel rows and the overall level in the mix of each sine wave. Can never have enough wacky sound sources I say…”
Experimental: 3D Granular Synthesis Engine
Background information:
A project I’m doing for a university assignment. It’s a 3d exploration-based granular synthesis engine. It evolved from my previous sine web project, but it’s still in the early stages. It has a sonified particle system with gravity.

EMS Synthi AKS controlled by hacked turntable with hand-drawn sequence disc. Custom electronics by NonLinearCircuits. 7 light sensors track on a re purposed scanner rail. 6 Sensors send VC (with potted slew) to the Synthi’s 2 inputs. 1 sensor sends a gate to the Envelope Shaper.
Very fun to play.

Exploration of generative time structures for analog synths

MakeNoise Phonogene Sound Experiments
Plain vanilla experiments with Make Noise Phonogene; the soundfile comes from OP-1 Teenage Engineering; the modulating triangle wave comes from a LiveWire oscillator.
The Phonogene is a digital re-visioning and elaboration of the tape recorder as musical instrument (Firmware Engineered by Flemming Christensen, Gotharman). It takes it’s name from a little known, one of a kind instrument used by composer Pierre Schaeffer. While it is not an emulation, it does share the primitive, tactile nature of it’s namesake, and expands upon the original concepts. It is informed by the worlds of Musique Concrète (where speed and direction variation were combined with creative tape splicing to pioneer new sounds) and Microsound (where computers allow for sound to be divided into pieces smaller then 1/10 of a second, and manipulated like sub-atomic particles). Having voltage control over every parameter, it is most successful as a digital audio buffer for the modular synthesist.
The Phonogene is comprised of a pair of tool-sets which work well together. Tape Music Tools allow for sounds to be recorded on the fly, layered using the internal Sound On Sound function, manually cut into pieces using the SPLICE function, and re-organized with the ORGANIZE control. Once it is Spliced up, it is possible to create nearly infinite variations of the original loop by modulating the ORGANIZE parameter, and VARI-SPEED allows for the speed and direction of playback to be controlled continuously with one control signal. GENE-SIZE, GENE-SHIFT and SLIDE make up the Microsound Tools. GENE-SIZE divides the audio buffer into progressively smaller pieces called Genes (aka particles, grains, granules). A clock signal applied to GENE-SHIFT will step through those pieces in chronological order, while a control signal (such as the Wogglebug Smooth CV) applied to SLIDE, moves through those pieces in a nonlinear fashion. Using SLIDE, random access of the audio buffer is possible. Obviously, functions such as VARI-SPEED and ORGANIZE are useful for Microsound as well, which is why these functions were grouped into one module. The end result is a sampler/ looper/ audio buffer that is able to exist within a modular synthesizer system, and offer a vast amount of real-time sound manipulation in a fast and tactile way.
There is often the expectation that “bad sounds” such as clicks, pops, distortions, wrong notes, phase in-accuracies and otherwise, should be impossible with modern musical instruments. Many designers are making instruments which are fool-proof, and which guarantee some specific musical result, thus making it easy to create the same music, over and over again. The Phonogene does NOT use this approach. In fact, we have made it very possible to make the “bad sounds” and “mistakes” that have led to some of the greatest moments in musical history (and of course, some of the worst!). With the Phonogene, it is possible to Splice sounds in such a way that you will hear sharp contrasts, clicks and pops. This is the physics of sound! It is possible to slow down a recording to point of complete decimation, so that all that remains is trail of digital artifacts. Such are the limitations of digital sound (at the moment). It is possible to render the source material completely unintelligible, to cut busted loops, to distort digitally, to obscure, to regenerate to the point of almost no signal integrity. This is the nature of the Phonogene. If you seek the perfect looping tool, in the most contemporary sense of the word, then please look elsewhere. If you desire to explore the realm of modular, digital sample manipulation and microsound, welcome!
