The Largo synth soon to be revealed

May 8, 2009 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on The Largo synth soon to be revealed

In May, what many of us have been waiting for, is soon to be revealed the Largo Synthesizer. Largo is the first pure software synthesizer with Waldorf DNA

Largos sound engine was injected with all the notorious wavetables of the Microwave, the legendary Wave and also the Q series. The LFO is already rehearsing very complex steps and the filter drive screams as loud as only our little baby can. So be prepared!

Largo offers three fat oscillators, two of them with sub oscillators. These oscillators include models of classic analog waveforms as well as a selection of waves from the PPG and Waldorf Wave stored in two Wavetables. All these run through two Waldorf multimode filters with steep cutoff, resonance up to self-oscillation and a drive stage to add even more punch and grainyness to the sound. Ultra-fast envelope generators and flexible LFOs as well as an easy to understand, yet extremely versatile modulation matrix make for a sound designer’s dream.

The filters have always been a core part of any Waldorf instrument. With outstanding expertise in both analog and digital synthesis, our developers took utmost care in developing the filters. And you can hear a significant difference when working with a Waldorf filter – they just sound right! Use the comb filters for plucked, stringed or blown sounds. Band pass, high pass, low pass and notch filters are all available with 12 dB and 24 dB slope. All of them sound extremely accurate and add pure sonic quality to the sound of your music.

Largo contains a flexible arpeggiator with 16 freely programmable steps as known from the exclusive Q synthesizer line plus an array of high quality effects such as Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Overdrive, Delay and Reverb.

Having a hard time getting your friends to understand what you do?

March 16, 2009 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Having a hard time getting your friends to understand what you do?

Whether it be your kids, friends or dates in the pub one often run into the problem of describing what the heck you do when you’re in the studio playing around with your Prophet 5, Oscillators, plug-ins, mixer boards etc, than this little video might come in handy, LOL. It features the veteran sound designer and synth nerd Suzanne Ciani explaining sound, synthesis and music on 80’s childrens TV show ‘3-2-1 Contact’.

Well even you and I might learn something :-)

Cheers, even though it is Mondayyyyy, shit four more days before another great weekend

It's not just about paint in the AB-synth

March 13, 2009 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on It's not just about paint in the AB-synth

Continuing from yesterday’s focus on weird stuff, for those who didn’t visit the blog yesterday check out the release of the Erectifier, here’s another one. See what you can make of this:

the AB-Synth combines a dual-stage cascading fuzz gain circuit (copped from the Algal Bloom fuzz) with an oscillation mode and an octave down control. What this yields is a pedal that can do Jimi-style super-saturation to stable synth-like bass tones to utterly out-of-control pulsing white noise to everything in between.

Controls include Gain, Level and Texture (from “blistering” to “splattery”). A toggle switch engages “Oscialltion Mode” which adds the “Trip” control for oscillation frequency. Oscialltion Mode turns the insane fuzz into and insane synth fuzz pedal.

Crystal clear isn’t it? Well I will give you some more food for thought – check out the video below of the AB-synth in action:

Cool oscillator waveforms come to life

An oscilloscope (commonly abbreviated to scope or O-scope) is a type of electronic test equipment that allows signal voltages to be viewed, usually as a two-dimensional graph of one or more electrical potential differences (vertical axis) plotted as a function of time or of some other voltage (horizontal axis). The oscilloscope is one of the most versatile and widely-used electronic instruments. [1]

Oscilloscopes are widely used when it is desired to observe the exact wave shape of an electrical signal. In addition to the amplitude of the signal, an oscilloscope can measure the frequency, show distortion, and show the relative timing of two related signals. Oscilloscopes are used in the sciences, medicine, engineering, telecommunications, and industry. General-purpose instruments are used for maintenance of electronic equipment and laboratory work. Special-purpose oscilloscopes may be used for such purposes as adjusting an automotive ignition system, or to display the waveform of the heartbeat.

Originally all oscilloscopes used cathode ray tubes as their display element, but modern digital oscilloscopes use high-speed analog-to-digital converters and computer-like display screens and processing of signals. Oscilloscope peripheral modules for general purpose laptop or desktop personal computers can turn them into useful and flexible test instruments.
