Substance is a new virtual analog software synthesizer from Tactile Sounds

August 20, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Substance is a new virtual analog software synthesizer from Tactile Sounds

Substance is a virtual analog software synthesizer (VSTi) emphasizing simplicity, flexibility, and sound quality. The key factors in the design of Substance were that it should sound great, without effects, and that it should all fit on one page.

Here’s what TS has to say about it:

Substance has two of everything: two oscillator sections, two LFOs, two envelopes, two filters. The oscillator sections were inspired by the architecture of classic analog polysynths, which used multiple oscillators to achieve polyphony, but allowed the oscillators to be combined for a monophonic Unison mode. The oscillators would generally be slightly out of tune with one another, resulting in a rich, chorused sound. Each of Substance’s oscillators likewise comprises seven unison voices, with the amount of detuning, and the stereo breadth being adressed by a single parameter, Spread. The LFOs can be used to modulate almost every parameter of the synth. They can be used to trigger the envelopes, to modulate the frequency and pulse-width of the oscillators, the cutoff frequency of the filters, and the volume of the amplifier. LFO-1 can be switched between free-running, tempo-synced, and key-synced modes. A manual is included in the download link, detailing all of the other features.

If you enjoy using Substance, please consider making a contribution in some form – money, music, and patches would all be received with gratitude.

Many thanks to Limeflavour, for the sleek GUI, and to Ingo Weidner and Ouroboros for their fantastic patches and valuable feedback. Thanks also to the KVR community for support and encouragement during the testing phase.

Substance was made with SynthEdit, and uses modules by Chris Kerry, Dave Haupt, and Kelly Lynch.

Huge wide power station sized sound

This is a re-release of the original Transcender with a few enhancements, It now has a choice of square or sawtooth waveforms for more voices, plus a trance style gate, but still has the multibank detuned oscillators mixed in stereo through twin filters for that huge wide power station sized sound.

Free Music Software: Pterosaur is a free 16-oscillator monosynth for Windows.

The basic waveform of each oscillator is a sawtooth wave – but the “mod” control morphs it into a sort of saw-pulse hybrid.

It’s available as a free download via VSTPlanet.

Native Instruments’ Massive synth is a great tool for creating nasty, rocking bass and lead sounds.

In this video Brian demonstrates the basics of using Massive’s oscillators, filters, and other features. He also shows how to enhance your Massive sounds using plug-ins like Transformer

Panzertank PM4 is a virtual phase modulation synth very much like the famous FM synthesizers. It has four sinus operators (oscillators) with individual APDSR envelopes, detune and velocity sensitivity.

This iPad-free video captures Ken MacBeth of MacBeth Studio Systems testing out the new MacBeth Mk1 Oscillator in 5U format, surely soon to be part of an X-Series Modular Synthesizer monster synth.

More test/demo of the MacBeth Mk1 Oscillator in 5U format….shown here- working with the multiturn potentiometers- also ‘glide’ switches in and out. Both oscillator outputs are Sawtooths….! Towards the end of this video- watch as I use the ’stability’ control…

Xmas gift from Ohm Force

December 18, 2009 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Xmas gift from Ohm Force

That’s the Ohm Force 2009 Christmas gift for the music production scene: the Performer Edition of their Symptohm:Melohman powersynth is now freeware, you can download freely download it from here. What are you waiting? Don’t be the last to grab it…

This ‘Performer Edition’ is a simplified version of our Symptohm:Melohman powersynth, especially made for live use – but being also handy at the studio. The core of the synth, its oscillators and all the filters are there: it’s the same audio engine of the ‘normal’ version. The only difference is that they’re all already programmed/fixed for each one of the (up to 1200!) patches from Symptohm’s sound library, the result being a simple and straight forward interface.

Drone station demo

This is a quick demonstration of DroneStation, a new app for the iPhone/Touch. A 2-oscillator synth, with an unique multi-touch interface that will hopefully make it more playable than trying to peck away at a little keyboard.

Screenshot showing it’s a 2-osc synth with a resonant 4PLP filter.
