IMAGINARY SYNTHS episode 1, Alpha JUNO-8

This synth exists only in in my imagination! I wanted to imagine, and replicate what an 8 part multitimbral Alpha Juno would sound like. In fact, if it did exist, here’s a small audio demo of what it actually would sound like. Play it in HD to do it justice!

Using only my Alpha Juno 2, the first pad part was recorded in Pro Tools playing manually to a click, on 8 individual passes.

The second part was created using MIDI sequencing in Pro Tools. I laid down a simple MIDI arpeggio and started recording the audio parts 1 stereo track at a time, each with their own “on the fly” modulations.

The oscillator de-tuning was accomplished by simply de-tuning using the Tune/function button while tweaking the root pitch with the alpha dial in real-time on a few of the audio passes . The “reversed” arpeggio sections were simple audio edits to the stereo mixdown.

I’ve always loved this synth, with it’s unique rich sound. Now I love it even more
as an 8 part multitimbral (albeit imagined, but possible to replicate) SYNTH BEAST!

Demonstration of the massive MacBeth M5N

Here is a demonstration of the MacBeth M5N being played in 3 note polyphonic via a Kenton Pro4 in polyphonic cyclic mode! I believe that the Pro2000 unit will also do the same thing.
Each of the oscillators on the M5N gets its own CV from the Pro4. I wish my keyboard skills were a little bit better- but this will give you some idea!
Ised three cams for this- a Canon 60D, a Nikon D90 and my small Sanyo Xacti camera that sat on a tripod above things!

Modcan Super Delay & Digital Delay Comparison

People have been wondering about the difference in sound between the Modcan 30B Super Delay (which is a true analog delay) and the Modcan 59B Digital Delay, so I set up a simple audio demonstration. It’s not meant to be an analog vs. digital contest — as you’ll hear, both of them sound beautiful but have very different tonal characteristics as well as unique reactions to control voltage manipulation.

The Modcan Sequencer is triggering a Modcan 58B VCDO that is passing through a Modcan 68B Matrix Filter (using the 4-Pole Bandpass output). In the first half of the video, that signal is passing through the analog Super Delay — which is a mono device. I twiddle the knobs throughout and then eventually let triangle waveforms from the Modcan 61B Quad LFO take over the invisible finger chores.

The second half of the video is the same sequence and signal chain passing through the Digital Delay, which has been engaged to output the audio in stereo mode. Again, after some manual twiddling I put the 61B Quad LFO to work once more and send a slow-moving triangle waveform into the control voltage inputs.

As may be apparent from the studio configuration, I do love the Modcan modules for their sound, aesthetic beauty and a user interface that squeezes myriad functions per module into a reasonably-sized space. I hope you find this a useful and entertaining video.

POKEY.synth demo

Using only the pokey.synth module for sound source. I’m also running the uLFO sine wave through the Aux input to demonstrate the SR function.

I’m using my uStep/Short Bus to trigger Envelators which are outputing CV Into the “vol” input on the Pokey. The Pokey module has 2 built in VCA’s! :) which is pretty awesome! Z8000 is also being clocked via Short Bus/uStep which is controlling pitch for pokey osc 1 & 2, uLFO pitch, SR CV (on pokey) and Wave CV on Pokey.

Bob Weigel of http://www.sounddoctorin.com shows the insides of a Korg Delta and explains the overview of operation, and plays a few sounds to give a feel for this great synth. The delta is all knobs and sliders. And a joystick that can both be set for a bend amount and filter modulation amount on the x axis. The y is modulation up and noise mod down. Made in 1979 along with the Lambda and Sigma. Lambda is a fully polyphonic machine with simpler controls but 3X the oscillators and dividers! Both are great to have around! The sigma is a monosynth with a very useful performance interface. I’ll try to cover these in another video soon!

This is an analog synth that I made. there are two main oscillators that are controled by the X and Y axis movement of the joystick to affect pitch. it also has a main oscillator that has a LDR (light dependent resistor, light sensor) and an LFO which also has a light sensor and the big grey knob on the side. I took out the spring that returns it to center and added a huge cap paralell to ground so it makes all kinds of twazy sounds even after you shut it off. I used the original “auto fire” switch for power.

Amos 1.2 Demo

Amos is a reactive MIDI instrument. It sends MIDI notes to desktop software and outboard gear. Think MIDI wind-chimes crossed with a pinball machine.

This video shows some of the new features added to Amos 1.2. Independent MIDI channels per disc and a re-designed settings panel are the highlights.

First session with the Elektron Octatrack. Checking out some of the capabilities of this new machine. No drum loops used in this short jam. Just triggering single shot samples of nord percussion and analogue drum sounds. Using the three stages of LFO’s for each track to control effects animation and various other parameters. Making some use of the re-trigger sample functions spanned across 4 patterns.
