”Via Marconi” – ’80s Italo with Memorymoog
The Memorymoog was the last official synth, made back in 1982, to come from Moog before they eventually went bankrupt and out of business. As a result, it was never fully completed; as MIDI technology was just coming out, the Memorymoog never did get to fully implement MIDI capability. There were two versions of this synth: the Memorymoog and the Memorymoog Plus (the version can be determined via the Autotune feature). The Plus model added a basic MIDI implementation, a Sequencer, and it also had more stable oscillator control, making the Plus model more valuable to collectors than the standard model.
Due to the seemingly incomplete MIDI implementation as well as a less than perfect user-interface/operating system, some popular upgrades and retrofits have been produced and these days it is very common to find Memorymoogs with these retrofits. The most valuable upgrade is the Lintronics Advanced Memorymoog (LAMM), originally designed for the standard model, but also available for the Plus model. It provides a redesigned operating system, advanced MIDI functions and improved hardware components. Kenton Electronics produces MIDI retrofits for both the standard and Plus Memorymoog models (Kenton and Lintronics can even install these upgrades for you, considering the delicate nature and value of the Memorymoog). These upgrades can substantially increase the stability, MIDI functionality and value of the Memorymoog.

CV guru Dan Deacon dropped by the Moog Sound Lab where he grabbed a mountain of gear wired it up, and piloted his drones through an ever evolving soundscape anchored by 2 Minitaurs and 2 MF-107 Freq-Boxes. To further expand his sound, Dan also incorporated dueling MF-103 Phasers and a pair of CP-251 Control Processors.

Moog Sub Phatty Filter Sequencing
This video shows the result of using the Koushion step sequencer app and the Moog Multi-Pedal (in MIDI-to-CV conversion mode) to create a tempo-synced filter step sequence on the Moog Sub Phatty synthesizer. The analog CV out of the Multi-Pedal is connected to the filter CV input on the Sub Phatty.

Moog Sub Phatty & Q960 Step Sequencer
The mighty analog Moog Sub Phatty Synthesizer is under control of Q960 Sequential Controller. As usual, Row A is for Pitch, Row B is for Filter opening. On this video, while sequence is running, there are tests for EGs snap, OSC reset under key Gate, fattyness of SubOsc, wild brutality of Multidrive distortion. Such a lovely, little analog machine.
Moog Sub Phatty has two oscillators, one sub oscillator, one noise generator, one lowpass filter transistor ladder and a dual distortion unit pre/post filter. On this video, you’ll find a walkaround of waveforms and treatment ready to go with sub oscillation and distortion.

The Moog Sub Phatty Part 2- The Filter

“Previous to the shooting of these demo videos, I set all of the “under the hood” functionality to settings that would cause the synthesizer to act most like a vintage synthesizer. In the process of shooting, the synthesizer was turned on and off a number of times. A couple of times, I found that certain obvious settings had been reset (like the LFO pitch tracking feature, which kept coming on). When it didn’t affect the subject I was shooting, I didn’t reset them to my tastes. It appears that I should have, because it now seems likely that this video was shot with the filter in 18 dB or12dB per octave mode, despite the fact that I had set it to 24dB per octave before starting the series of shoots. Keep that in mind! (sadly, I no longer possess the unit, so I can’t reshoot!)”

The Moog Sub Phatty theme is comprised of Sub Phatty sounds, with the exception of the drums, which were programmed using an Ensoniq ASR-10. There are no effects used of any kind.

Applied synthesis and more from the Moogfoundation
When you have the ability to control multiple resonances, you can create “formants.” Formants are the acoustic resonances of the human voice. Marc creates a patch which uses multiple resonances to generate a human-voice-sounding sound.
Inspired by Leon Theremin’s incredible device, Maurice Martenot set about creating a device of his own. His Ondes Martenot became an important stepping stone in the development of synthesizers, as well as an inspiring musical instrument for composers. Marc describes the history and effect of the creation of this device.
