Working the Oberheim Matrix-12

August 3, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Working the Oberheim Matrix-12

About the Oberheim:

Oberheim’s Matrix 12 is a legendary analog synthesizer from the mid-eighties that is still the king of analog sounds. One of the fattest, roundest, pleasantly analog synthesizers around! It’s long been known for creating some of the thickest and best analog pads, sweeps, buzzes, basses and textures. It features Matrix Modulation for extremely wild virtual patching for almost unlimited range of sounds and modulation capabilities!

The Matrix 12 is similar to the Xpander and the lighter Matrix 6. But the Matrix 12 is much fatter and more programmable than either. Every control can have an effect on some other parameter thanks to Oberheim’s flexible design. For example, there are 15 types of LFOs and VCAs per voice! And there’s plenty of diagrams drawn out on the front panel of the synth to help you figure out some signal routing.

In this video:

This is sound demo of the Oberheim Matrix-12 synthesizer. All but two of the patches are my original creation and hopefully shows some of the ridiculously flexible sound architecture that is possible with this board. I’m playing some riffs both of my own original music and from some of the bands that have influenced me. The last bit, Intro to Gunslinger, while it is short it DID take a couple of weeks practice to get it right and is backed by a Machinedrum.

A summary of song riffs played:
G-Storm – Miranda (By The Sea)
Radiohead – All I Need
Depeche Mode – Enjoy The Silence
G-Storm – Cerulean Deraileur
Jimmy Van M ft. Terra Deva – bassline from Love Like Sleep
G-Storm – Spaced Out Beauty
New Order – Blue Monday
G-Storm – Aerial
808 State – breakdown from In Yer Face
Garbage – You Look So Fine
Sasha – Mr Tiddles
Go West – intro to Call Me
G-Storm – untitled track
G-Storm – Expectations (a really old unrecorded track of mine)
Spaced Out Beauty
M83 – You Appearing
Expectations
Immersion Domain – 1000 Images (I used the same Limuidz factory patch on the Xpander for that track)
Van Halen – I’ll Wait (Eddie used an OB-Xa, I believe)
G-Storm – Descendant
Vangelis – Blade Runner (Opening Titles)
G-Storm – Gunslinger
G-Storm – intro to Gunslinger

Recorded via Alesis Multimix-8 and into Macbook w/ only occasional additional effects from the Multimix added for select sounds.

FT201- Analog State Variable Filter / 10 Step Sequencer

The KOMA FT201 intro: KOMA FT201, our voltage controlled vactrol state variable filter combined with a 10 step sequencer. As with all sweet spots you can approach it in two completely different ways: either you circle around it in a delicate manner, play with the overtones and resonant frequencies or you blast out the random function and let the madness begin! The FT201, a sweet lady, who brings sexy back into your overall sound. Kadeng! The FT201 comes standard with a solid footswitch, multiple outputs, an audio and control voltage patchbay and our new innovative expression controller.

Our buddy Gerald played around with two FT201’s (our Analog Filter / 10 Step Sequencer) and crappy but lovely old Moog Satellite synth. A little insight in the general sound, IR motion controller, filter and sequencer functions.

A Day Of Beautiful Synthesizers

Lots of modular goodies in this video :-). In case you are wondering what that wooden keyboard is -Tetrazzi is the newest incarnation of the Organus series, a mandala of analog oscillator circuits that can cross-modulate to form the empire of infinite circuitry known as pure sonic chaos. The tetrazzi boards shall be assembled by machine in Colorado, they will be perfect, and sonde-tested here in the workshop in Baltimore. All you need to complete it is four piezo barres, four bottons, four knobs, two output jacks, twelve studdes of brass, and a battery clip; all the hard stuff having already been done by a machine man!

A MuffWiggler meet-up for Irish modulators. A small friendly affair with some beautiful instruments. If only everyday could be like that :)

Running a simple sequence using the Analogue Systems rs200 Sequencer

June 12, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Running a simple sequence using the Analogue Systems rs200 Sequencer

We just received the very first shipment of Pittsburgh Modular Analog Delay modules. This module is awesome!

We’re running a simple sequence using the Analogue Systems rs200 Sequencer, Livewire AFG, Division 6 Filtaire, Analogue Systems rs60 Envelope Generator, A.S. rs85 LFO, and the Malekko VCA. We used the LFO’s triangle output to modulate the delay time, then the feedback amount. This is a really well designed and beautiful sounding delay module and we are happy that it’s available now. :-)

A basic initial overview of the awesome Pittsburgh Analog Delay module. Piston Honda is the audio source, with Maths and .VCA for shaping. The excellent Pittsburgh Timetable is driving a Rene’, which provides quantized pitches to the Piston as well as non-quantized CV to the Delay Rate of the Analog Delay later on in the video.

Self-modulating modular analog patch

May 2, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Self-modulating modular analog patch

A self-modulating modular analog patch, “Howler Patch” is designed to drone and change with random patterns over a long stretch of time. In this example, I’ve fed a recording of Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl” into it, using the EH V256 vocoder to modulate the voice with the drone-synthesis from my modular patch.

This example contains no overdubs or live-tweaking of any kind. I just turned it on, started playing the “Howl” track, and walked away.

DS-8 Clone Analog Drum Synth Machine Kit – Synthrotek – Vintage percussion beats
The DS-8 was originally designed by Coron in the 80′s to be mounted on to a drum to in order to produce synth percussion sounds. Similar to the DS-7, which contained a VCO +VCA chain. The LFO modulated the VCO and the decay envelope is triggered by a piezz0 cell. The Decay Pot is really a release and the VCA is controlled by the LFO. The DS-8 added a colored noise generator with a balance pot, which allows more hi-hat and snare “sounds” to be achieved. PC Board measures 5 & 5/8ths X 2 & 5/8ths inches. This PCB is MADE IN THE USA and up to Synthrotek’s fine specs. The Pots can be through-hole mounted, for an easy build.

What a suitcase beauty from Analogue Solutions

Analogue Solutions have announced a new product called the Station Q analog sequencer. This is a miniaturized edition of their Oberkorn sequencer. The new Station Q has 8 steps instead of 16 on the Oberkorn. Likewise there is no MIDI implimented on the Station Q.

Key Features:

* 24 CV knobs, 8 Gate switches, 9 LEDs
* 3x CV channels, 2x Gate channels
* CV control of Speed / Tempo
* Control of sequence position (step number)
* Rugged steel construction
* Compact, portable size

Station Q is like half an Oberkorn sequencer. It is identical to Oberkorn, except that it is 8 step instead of 16, and does not have the MIDI features. The Station Q is the perfect companion to the Station X/Y mini-modular combo.
