Floppy disc music goes to space

Another useless device.
Imperial march played by two floppy disk drives.

How does it work?

“It’s nothing new and it’s very simple. The sound comes from a magnetic head moved by stepper motor. To make a specific sound, head must be moved with appropriate frequency.

FDD has a simple interface – the description may be found for example [ HERE ]. To move the head you need to activate the drive by pulling the DRVSB0 or 1 (depends on the cable you have and the connector – notice the crossover on the FDD ribbon cable) pin low and then falling edge on STEP pin makes the head move one step in direction dependent on DIR pin state.

An ATMega microcontroller is generating those frequencies and it makes the drives play music.”

Welcome to the Cloudroom House

September 22, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Welcome to the Cloudroom House

Welcome to the Cloudroom House – a music experience for everyone to join and share.

The Cloudroom House is not just an album, it’s a song cycle that consequently breaks away from conventional ways to release and receive music. This song cycle aims for wholeness and therefore challenges you to complete it with your contribution. You can contribute by simply paying attention and lending me your ear. By giving it a listen you are also giving it a meaning. I am no one and my music is all in vain unless you bring this to life by your notice.

The Cloudroom House furthermore explores the relationship between performer and recipient – the relationship between you and me. There are a lot of questions we need to find the answers for. At first, how do we define our relationship? What determines our relationship? Is it reliance? Is it a symbiotic reciprocity and mutuality or is it interdependency that binds us? In addition, we need to decipher whether our binding is abiding or only temporary and if we can stand on our own or not.

So you see that I’m rather amorphous and faceless and that’s why I would like you to shape me. Only you can shape me. I want to take you on a journey as my constant companion. We could build up something here together. It’s completely in your sole discretion what you make of the Cloudroom House. You decide what it’s all about. You can call me the house’s structual engineer whereas you are its interior decorator and as long as you listen, you are a part of it.

Radiophonic Synth Workshop

September 20, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Radiophonic Synth Workshop

Loopmasters has released Radiophonic Synth Workshop, a sample library featuring a new & unique sounding collection of analogue experimentation.

The team of scientists report that era defining instruments of analogue synthesis such as the Korg Mono/Poly and Roland System 100 and beautiful esoteric instruments like the Elka Synthex, Oberheim 4Voice and Octave Cat were combined with valve equalisation and dynamic control, vintage reverbs and tape delay, to create over 1Gb of data ready to be incorporated into any style of dance or electronic music.

Our team are pleased to report that soft synths or plug in of any type were not used in this project to ensure maximum analogue sparkle and depth within results.

The Radiophonic Synth Workshop sample collection from Loopmasters weighs in at 1.2GB and includes 890 Synth Samples recorded at pristine 24Bit resolution. Also included are 10 ready to play patches for Reason NNXT, Halion, EXS, SFZ and Kontakt soft samplers.

From Pulsing synths, Alien FX, Transmission Fuzz, Pulses and Deep Space Echoes, 50’s inspired Radio Chat, Sci Fi Bleeps, Lasers and more – this is one hell of a sound collection meant for all types of music producers worldwide.

The Radiophonic Synth Workshop sample library is available for £29.95 GBP.

Music From A Dry Cleaner

September 20, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Music From A Dry Cleaner

Diego Stocco’s experimental music creation are always a treat, check this one out:

Almost everyday, on my way to a local bakery, I walk in front of a dry cleaners.
When they have the front door open, I hear a lot of interesting sounds coming from their work equipment. Eventually, the different mechanical and steam sounds sparked something in my mind, so one day I asked the owners if I could record a piece of music by using their machines as musical instruments.

I used a puff iron, press and dry cleaning machines, a washer, clothes hangers, and a bucket full of soap.
The bass and lead sounds were created from the buzzing tones coming from the conduits and engines.
There are no additional sounds from any traditional or electronic instruments. Enjoy!

Music in Neural Dimensions

September 13, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Music in Neural Dimensions

This world premiere performance dives into an uncharted realm of human expression, as the conscious and subconscious minds of the performers become the very fabric of creation. Imagination becomes tangible, while hopes and fears are brought to life through EEG brainwave scanning technology. This performance was made possible with generous support from the Yahoo! Boost Award. The MiND ensemble (Music in Neural Dimensions) is a new-media performance group that utilizes custom interfaces to explore the mind-machine-music connection.

The traditional paradigm of creativity and art has been as following: there is an artist, a thought process, and fixed medium which reflects those thoughts, leading to the realization of the artist’s expressive vision. Neurofeedback radically shifts this paradigm. Now there is an artist, a thought process, and a dynamic medium that actively interfaces with the very thought processes of the artist himself, a form of expression that drastically reshapes the way we conceive of the creative process. This presents a unique design problem: how can we optimize interaction within a completely intangible instrument? The ensemble hopes to make strides towards a deeper level of understanding of this question, and a significant contribution to both the scientific and artistic communities in the form of software tools and reference material.

The MiND ensemble promotes a richly creative personal awareness in which the mind is the medium.

DODECAUDION – preview

September 9, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on DODECAUDION – preview

Brief and spontaneous preview of what you may expect from Dodecaudion – a spatial a/v controller based on infrared distance sensors, arduino, bluetooth, osc, processing and (in this case) reaktor5. Official video is going to be released in mid august and the premiere concert will follow shortly after :)

It’s only a preview and there will be a lot of refinements in terms of sound design and instrument characteristics.

Dodecaudion is a project by panGenerator that’s
going to be released under HEDOCO brand.

Dodecaudion is totally open sourced:
> MIT license – source code.
> Creative Commons (probably CC BY-NC-SA) – form design, PCB layout & everything else.

EARTH TO DISK

September 4, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on EARTH TO DISK

12 inch vinyl 2008-2011 [BY ART OF FAILURE]
(realized with Flo Kaufmann and the ArtKillArt label)

Earth_to_disk is a projects that uses the earth elevation data. The height informations of the globe are analogically transposed on a 12 inch record. A standard turntable can after that read this relief. The chain of the elevation data crossed during the playing is directly transposed into audible sound vibrations. By every rotation of the disk, we can recognize patterns corresponding to the relief of the crossed continents. The engraving of this elevation’s information on the surface of the disk generates in consequence a subtle image of the earth. This image may remind us the representations that are proposed to us since the stellar exploration during the 60’s, until today with applications like google-earth.
