Demonstration of the Erthenvar Patch Chord Eurorack module available at erthenvar.com. Functionally, the module is somewhere between an oscillator and a waveshaper – and also can be described as a bank of two octaves of oscillator controlled oscillators

The Erthenvar Patch Chord is a bank of 25 “Oscillator Controlled Oscillators”, which can be used to generate chords in a Eurorack system.

The Patch Chord continously samples the cycle duration and duty cycle of the input waveform. It outputs 12 semitone steps above the input note, 12 semitone steps below the input note, and the root note itself (available from two output jacks). All outputs are pulse waveforms with continuously variable pulse width.

An oversized tri-color LED spans the color spectrum in each octave, so each note has a unique color! The input jack is passively multipled to an output jack so the visual effects of the LED can be had even if the module is not part of the current patch.

There four modulation types available, each with an input jack and a three-position switch. The switch can turn off the modulation, allow the CV value to control the parameter, or turn on the modulation. The modulation jacks are all DC coupled and respond to audio rate signals, though the tracked waveform has a lower limit of around 20 seconds per cycle.

  1. The SQR modulation forces the tracked duty cycle to 50%, making all of the 25 outputs into square waves
  2. The INT modulation changes the relationship between each output from a semitone step to an integer or harmonic step
  3. The ZERO modulation resets all of the output counters to 0, similar to a sync function
  4. The HOLD modulation stops tracking the input and keeps the last counted cycle duration and duty cycle values

Patch using two 4ms Pingable Envelope Generators. This was an experiment to see what rhythmic possibilities are possible using only two PEGs synced to the same LFO clock. This same clock also was controlling one MakeNoise Brains, and two pressure points. The output of the Pressures Points was CV controlling the PEG’s divided time divisions making some cool repeating glitchy effects.

Background information:

AudioGL is a Modular Software Synthesizer and Sequencer.  It is designed to allow musicians to create complex compositions with ease.  AudioGL has a dynamic 3D interface which focuses on streamlining workflow, so composers can spend less time navigating the interface, and more time writing music.

Here are the specifications of the computer I have been using to develop AudioGL

Make/Model: Lenovo X61 Tablet

Processor:    Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8ghz

Graphics:      Intel X3100 (low quality integrated graphics card)

Audio:           M-Audio Fasttrack Pro & ASIO4All

Display:        1024×768 (Laptop) – 1280×1024 (External)

As you can see, AudioGL does not require a high performance computer.  If your system specifications are close to or higher than mine, AudioGL should run just fine for you.

Although the interface is rendered in 3D, it does not consume any more resources than a typical 2D interface. Furthermore, the graphical quality of the interface can be raised or lowered, depending upon your preferences.

The synthesizer is designed towards low CPU usage without compromising sound quality.  To provide both, the instruments you create in AudioGL will only consume CPU when they are playing.  This makes it possible to create a large composition on an underpowered laptop, provided that you only have so many instruments playing at one point in time.

The Filter is a voltage controlled, analog, state variable filter designed by Pittsburgh native and electronics experimenter Michael Johnsen.  The state variable topology was chosen because it allowed us to produce a very smooth and natural sounding filter, in addition to offering several other modes of operation, each with a unique sound and energy all their own.

There Is No Sweet Spot 
This Filter defines the sound of Pittsburgh Modular.  It offers a warm, organic sweep through the full frequency range.  The lowpass filter is gummy and relaxed while the highpass is clean and defined. The goal was to produce a filter that did not have a sweet spot; where the every turn of the frequency knob produced something interesting.
