Dirty Electronics Mute Synth promo made only with sounds from the Mute Synth with edits and processing. Photography and animation Stereographic (Birmingham). Performed by Burlesque artist Eliza DeLite.

The Mute Synth is a hand-held touch and tilt instrument with copper etched artwork and contoured printed circuit board that was designed in collaboration with Mute and graphic designer Adrian Shaughnessy. The instrument brings together many Dirty Electronics aesthetics and instrument designs into one device in particular creating an instrument ‘of the hand’ (in terms of both playing and building), a noise-based device that utilises feedback, and exploring the relationship between artwork and circuit board.

The full power of the Intellijel µMod

August 10, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on The full power of the Intellijel µMod

A brief audio and visual demo of the processing capabilities of the Intellijel µMod four quadrant multiplier.

About µMod:

Four quadrant multiplying modulator (aka ring mod) in 4 hp.

Features:

dedicated ac and dc inputs (all four can be used at the same time).
attenuators for x and y input groups.
polarity switches for x and y inputs (positive, negative or both).
a unique ‘q’ control which stands for “quadrant” which allows you to shift the multiplication into positive or negative quadrants.
very low leakage from x input (when q is in center).
changing the q value in fm adds the signal frequencies back into the sum+difference frequencies (typical output of a rigmod) which adds richness to the classic ringmod sound and allows for many variations of bell tones, chimes and mallet-type timbres.
it can be used as a linear vca.
great for waveshaping (especially two synced audio sources).
excellent for cv mangling (use the dc inputs and play with the rectifier switches).
connecting cv sources to the ac inputs results in interesting lag effects.

Free Weekly Ableton Live Rack – Guitar Harmonics Synth

August 10, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · 2 Comments

The ever so persistent AfroDJMac is yet again here with a new rack for Live:

Using my Fender Mustang electric guitar, I sampled all the harmonics on each string at the 5th, 7th, and 12th frets. From there I brought it into Ableton Live and created a pretty cool sounding instrument. Enjoy!

Download it here: http://bit.ly/freesynth20

I’m very excited to be bringing you the 20th Free Weekly Ableton Live Rack: “The AfroDJMac Guitar Harmonics Synth.”  It’s been really great bringing you these racks every week, and today is a special one, not just because #20 is something of a milestone, but also because it happens to be my birthday :) Thanks to everyone who keeps coming back every week and to those who have been so instrumental in spreading the word about this project.  Alright let’s get down to business.

So, I’m currently enjoying a visit from my family, including a surprise visit by my two little nephews.  The eldest one, Sam, is five and when he got to my house and saw some of my musical instruments, he told me he was “really good at music.”  So I took him into the basement studio and after he banged out a beat on the drums, I gave him my Fender Mustang.  It was a lot of fun seeing the sense of discovery and innocence in his eyes as he banged away on the guitar, unaware that his left hand not only had to touch the stings, but also press them down on the fretboard.  By just placing his hands over the strings, he was actually producing some nice harmonics for a few seconds, and that inspired me to create this rack.  (If you are not sure what I mean by “Guitar Harmonics” check out this link).

This weeks rack was created by sampling the harmonics produced by each string at the 5th, 7th, and 12th fret.  The instrument comes set up with a macro knob that allows you to switch between the different samples, each of which has its own unique character.  This allows for some cool effects, such as holding the sustain pedal and changing the sample while you play, which creates an interesting morphing timbre.  There’s a macro knob that reverses the samples, creating a swelling, somewhat glitchy sound, not unlike those from some of my favorite psychedelic  Beatles tracks (or my 3rd Ableton Live Rack: Reversed Piano”).  I’ve also been experimenting with the Grain Delay plug-in more and more these days, and there are some macro knobs to control that effect.  Check it out and have fun!  PS. If you are not a Live user, you can still use the samples included in the download.

Free Monosynth from UGO for Windows user

August 6, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Free Monosynth from UGO for Windows user

Ugo Audio has released Rez 3, ‘a mean little monosynth’ for Windows.

Here’s what they have to say about Rez 3:

Rez is a seemingly basic synth, but it’s capable of a very wide range of sounds. While Rez has a bunch of cool features, the beating heart of Rez is its filter. It’s made from multiple chained filters acting as a single powerful filter and it’s highly resonant, providing Rez with its distinctive character. Top that off with distortion, a phaser, various oscillator modulations, delay, and a killer programmable arp and step sequencer, and you’ve got a powerhouse of a synth in a very small package.

From funky squishes, beastly basses, and screaming leads, to tight arpeggiations, swirling rhythms, atmospheres, bells, and interesting effects, you’ll find it all here. Additionally, it comes with two skins – Yellow & Black, or Black & Yellow.

Features:

  • Virtual analog oscillators
  • Sub-oscillator
  • Detune (modulatable via aftertouch)
  • Programmable phrase arpeggiator
  • Step sequencer (arp driven) with four mod destinations
  • Highly resonant low pass filter with velocity, LFO, and envelope modulation

While Rez is free, three commercial banks are available for it – each with 128 presets.

Audio demos & the download are available at the Ugo site.

Hackable digital synth

July 31, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Hackable digital synth

More details has been announced on the upcoming Meeblip SE synthesizer – an updated version of the Meeblip open hardware synth. The design retains the basic interface of the original, with the addition of features that make it more powerful (like an adjustable PWM waveform) and easier to use (patch storage).

New Features:
Sixteen patch memories (accessed by tapping the save/load button and flipping one of the sixteen front panel switches)
Two envelopes – a dual-mode A/D or A/S/R amplitude envelope and an A/D envelope for the filter
Bandlimited oscillators (with optional raw waveforms, if aliasing is your thing)
Dual-mode PWM waveform on oscillator A. Select either a pulse wave with user-programmable width, or sweep the pulse width with user-programmable sweep speed
New triangle waveform on oscillator B
Filter envelope amount has been added to the front panel
Extended MIDI parameter control
A redesigned front panel
There are also a few board tweaks to reduce noise.

Meeblip SE will be available in two versions:
A new front panel and pre-programmed microcontroller for existing MeeBlip owners — all the new features except programmable patch storage (there are no save/load switches on the original). Available August 8th for $25.
New meeblip se hardware that includes patch save/load and midi channel buttons, power switch on the front panel, and an easier-to-assemble design (the I/O board now mounts directly to the back panel and connects to the main board with a single ribbon cable).

The Meeblip SE synth will be available in a few weeks for the same price as the original — $139, including multi-volt power adapter. See the Meeblip site for details.
