Aurora Sound Studio HD is described as a “pattern based sequencer”.

We take that to mean that the developers were inspired by the Yamaha Tenori On. While this has been done before, Aurora Sound Studio HD is going beyond most previous Tenori On wannabe’s by including a mixer, audio effects, synth patch editing and a song mode for sequencing patterns.

Aurora Sound Studio HD is officially “coming soon”.

Monotron sound mangling

The guys at musicradartv demonstrate sound mangling with the Korg Monotron.

A lot of people have dismissed the Korg Monotron as a noisemaking toy – but this video demonstrates some interesting uses for the cheap monophonic analog synthesizer.

Structure your songs using Blocks in Reason 5 & Record 1.5

The second announcement for Reason and Record is taking a stab at structuring your songs in segments like intro, verse, refrain etc using something called Blocks. Blocks lets you sequence your songs using a more pattern-based approach, with the segments of your song as individual building blocks to be laid out in your arrangement.

Start by creating the discrete parts of your song in blocks mode. When you are ready to start building your song, just switch back to song mode and draw in what blocks should play in the dedicated pattern lane. Use one block for the verse and one for the chorus — or build your song around a single 8-bar loop.

Blocks provide a very fast way of creating a musical structure for your song. But the options don’t end there. With the basic arrangement laid out, you can see the contents of the blocks and create variations and mute individual parts, or add further musical elements in song mode.

I think this seem very promising – looks like the Propeller guys got this right!

GrainCube – Electroacoustic Reaktor Collaboration

GrainCube is a four part granular processing instrument with numerous randomizing functions and modulation capabilities that allow for indescribable sonic mischief. The heart of GrainCube is a 400mb sample map of exclusive sample material from Richard Devine & Josh Kay of DevineSound. GrainCube is a collaboration between DevineSound & Rick Scott (Rachmiel), with additional programming and GUI tweaks by Igor Shilov of Twisted Tools. An additional version is also available for the Jazzmutant Lemur, re-imagined by Antonio Blanca.

Richard Devine is one of the most highly respected sound designers in our industry and here he gives away the result of an electroacoustic collaboration with RachMiel: a unique new Reaktor instrument. Not only that, but he’s created a special Lemur version alongside Lemur-programmer genuis Antonio Blanca for the JazzMutant community.

Richard Devine’s unique approach to sound is hugely in demand and the Lemur Cube’s two granular samplers are packed with an entire library of original sound content. The randomisations inside the Reaktor patch make it a sound sculpture piece that never plays the same sound twice. The in-depth control provided by the Lemur template is perfect for guiding the chaos.

The twisted textures provided by DevineCube are ideal to add soundscapes and sound fx to any project, or even throw in your own samples into the waveform window (define the samples range in the main window) and see what comes out!

DIY Synth kit from Doepfer released

As announced previously this year the DIY Synth is now released. The DIY Synth is the beginning of a a new product line: a low cost DIY kit to build a full-fledged analog synthesizer. The kit is made of an assembled and tested pc board that includes all that is necessary to build a standard analog synthesizer.

Prices:
Euro 100.00 (without controls, sockets, switches, cables, power supply and case, without temperature control of the VCO)
Euro 120.00 (same as above, but with temperature control of the VCO)

Obviously you need to add potentiometers, knobs, rack etc to get something useful!

This video offers up a first look at Reason 5 and the Dr. Octo Rex Loop Player:

The upgraded Dr. Octo Rex loop player loads eight REX loops into one player and lets you switch between them on the fly. This is designed to make  arranging a breeze – load the drum loops into one player, the guitars into another and use the sequencer to select what loop to play in a pattern-like fashion.

With eight loops to switch between, the new Rex also comes ready for the experimental minded. Set the player to retrig the loops on the beat, on the bar or on the 16th note. Or program the loops manually like in the original rex player.

For each of the eight loops, the new rex player also comes with an expanded set of per-slice settings. Set pan, pitch, filter frequency and level, reverse slices, use multiple outputs, create alternating groups of slices and much more.

Propellerhead says that this is the first peek at Reason 5, but that they’ll have more Reason 5 and Record 1.5 previews throughout this week.

A Moog in every class

This video, via The Bob Moog Foundation, captures The Beastie Boys at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Minimoogseum.

The eight foot high showcase serves as the first permanent installation of Bob Moog’s archives, including one of his Grammy awards and relics from the early development of Moog synthesizers. The “MiniMoogseum” can be thought of as a small scale version of the future “Moogseum”, coming soon to the Asheville area.

The Beastie Boys join a growing group of celebrity musicians, including Stevie Wonder, Keith Emerson, and Billy Corgan who have all voiced their support of the Foundation’s mission to teach science to children using musical instruments. In the video the band expresses that they are …proud and happy to be here at the beginning of this beautiful thing…..the Moogseum.

They continue by saying “There should be a Moog synthesizer in every classroom.”

Making the MiniMoogseum a Reality: Volunteers and SponsorsThe MiniMoogseum was designed and built by a team of volunteers and sponsors—the foundation playfully refers to them as Rockstars–including Gene Felice, Domus Aurea Woodworking Design, Steve Dunnington and Mike Pieo.

Materials for the project were donated by Cormark International, Speedy Graphics, Moog Music, Asheville Hardware and Henco Reprographics. This project is the first step in an iterative process for the Foundation. The full-sized Moogseum, scheduled to open in four years, will feature interactive and experiential exhibits that inspire the next generation of Bob Moog like innovators, as well as an intimate performance area, where musicians from around the world can participate in the Foundation’s programming.
