NanoMod 8-bit – free instrument library for Native Instruments Kontakt
Rhythmic Robot has launched NanoMod 8-bit, a free instrument library for Native Instruments Kontakt.
NanoMod 8-bit is a simple but versatile Kontakt synthesiser based on vintage 8-bit polysynths, featuring an “intelligent” interface that allows the user to adjust multiple parameters with single controls. It is offered as part of the KVR Developers’ Challenge 2014.
NanoMod 8-bit brings the simplicity of Rhythmic Robot’s NanoMod interface to bear on the crusty, gritty, aliased sounds of classic 8-bit synthesisers of the early to mid 80s. Using source waves taken from vintage Ensoniq hardware and a front-end incorporating convolved Wasp and MS20 filters, this NanoMod is aimed squarely at big, powerful polysynth sounds – everything from warm and evolving pads to screaming leads.
The library is a free download, released as an entry to the KVR Developer Challenge 2014.

Quick test after update to Sopranotron 3.0 buffer management and thread management. Fat Lady of Limburg presets, 11 synths active throughout, dying to spring into action but mainly silent, being driven 2 at a time by Little MIDI Machine. It can only push out 2 MIDI channels, hence 2 at a time ….
In this configuration POLYANA is consuming around 25% of iPad 2.
POLYANA still has no GUI, hence it presents full-screen black on launch.

Sequencer Preview – B-Step 2 – iPad, Linux, Windows and Mac
Monoplugs has announced B-Step Sequencer 2 – a new version of their MIDI step sequencer.
The new version of the sequencer will be available as VST and Standalone for Windows, Mac, Linux, iPad, Raspberry Pi – later Android and as AudioUnit – VST3 is also on the list.

For those who may be wondering about the name, Ondes is French for “waves.” But if you know a little something about the history of electronic music, you might also recognize the word. The Ondes Martenot is an early electronic instrument with a sound not dissimilar to that of the more widely known Theremin. Unlike the Theremin, which is played by moving your hands in space, the Ondes Martenot has a keyboard and a sliding ring which allows the player to glide between pitches. Below each key is a little indentation for the finger to stop on. These indentations allow for precise pitch intonation, something that is neary impossible to acheive on the Theremin. (Unless, of course, your name is Clara Rockmore). Because several 20th century composers (notably Olivier Messiaen) composed for the instrument, the Ondes Martenot is still taught in some music conservatories to this day, though it’s a bit expensive to get a hold of one yourself. You might also have seen Jonny Greenwood performing one in Radiohead.

tinyTesla, a new Kickstarter project to fund a little MIDI Tesla coil kit that’s designed to be easy to build.
tinyTesla is a desktop MIDI Tesla coil kit designed to be suitable for beginners or veterans in electronics. The project has blown past its $20,000 fundraising goal, with more than 10 times that amount already pledged. Backers can get a kit to build a MIDI tesla coil for about $150.
The Tesla coil’s lightning heats up air and creates pressure waves that are audible as sound. The more times per second the lightning fires, the higher the pitch created.
