Modular synthesizers: Serge Creature TGO Demo

May 13, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Modular synthesizers: Serge Creature TGO Demo

As there didn’t seem to be too many basic demo’s of Serge modulars, ‘pjoris2’ tries here to document his discoveries of Serge. He’ll start with the most recommended “starter” M-class pannel: the Creature; and more specifically with the basic noisemaker in there: the Voltage-Controlled Timegen Oscillator (TGO). All noises are made with +/- only the TGO. X-Fader used as output, and sometimes the SSG als LFO. An overview of the video:

Basic Functions of the Left Oscillator (Osc 1)
(00:05) Saw wave output
(00:20) Square wave output
(00:30) Frequency modulation using variable CV input
(01:10) Audio-rate frequency modulation
(02:00) 1V/Oct CV input
Basic Functions of the Right Oscillator (Osc 2)
Trigger on (to the right)
(02:15) Triangular wave output with variable rise and fall
(03:00) Frequency modulation using variable CV input
(03:30) Pulse output, varying frequency and duty cycle
(04:30) Demonstrating trigger switch
Trigger off (to the left)
(04:45) Triggering Osc 2 with pulse out of Osc 1
(05:00) Depending on the relative settings of Osc 1 & 2, the frequency of Osc 2 is now controlled by Osc 1. We can vary now Rise & Fall without changing the pitch of the Osc 2 output.
(05:40) Now using the Pulse output of Osc 2: pulse width modulation.
Using Right Section as Filter
(06:00) Plug in saw of Osc 1 in the lower Sig In (black jack). The Rise pot changes filter cutoff. The Fall pot only makes signal more quiet.
(06:30) Filter cut-off modulation using the VC in of Osc 2.
(07:30) Audio-rate filter cut-off modulation
Saw of Osc 1 in Input of Osc 2 and Trigger On
(08:00) Filtering was with Trigger Off. Now see what happens with Trigger On for Osc 2. No idea what it does, but sounds interesting …
(08:40) Adding frequency modulation of Osc 2.
Feedback on Osc 2
(10:00) Feedback the output in the CV In: that way you get exponential (+ modulation) and logarithmic (- modulation) slopes
(11:00) Feedback of the output in the Sig In. No idea what this is.
(11:30) Add an LFO to the CV in. Even more noise.
(12:00) Certainly if you take the modulation into audio frequencies !
And finally: some more feedback:
(12:45) Osc 1 out in Osc 2 Sig In, Osc 1 Pulse in Osc 2 Gate in, LFO in Osc 2 CV in.

Audio Mastering for iPad

May 12, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Audio Mastering for iPad

http://audio-mastering-ipad.com

The first fully functional audio mastering application for iPad. For everyone who wants to make own music tracks excellent quality. Based on the same algorithms which used in professional plug-ins this application turns your iPad into a real mastering studio.

This all-in-one tool lets you process sound, convert audio formats, change sample rate, convert bit depth, cut part of track for preview and make fade-in and fade-out.

With very easy and clear interface you can tweak all controls in real time and listening to the final result right away.

Audio processing features:

  • Linear phase 10-bands graphic Equalizer based on phase shifting.
  • Three bands Stereo Imaging with common Stereo Width level.
  • Harmonic Saturator with three sets of harmonics.
  • Loudness Maximizer with adjustable response speed and ceiling.
  • Sample rate converter from 96, 88.2, 48 to 44.1 kHz.
  • Bit depth converter supported 16, 24, 32 bits.
  • Dithering with noise shaping.
  • Supports .wav, .aif, .mp3 audio file formats.

Application features:

  • Predefined preset hotkeys, ability to create own presets.
  • All processing settings are stored for each file.
  • Processing group of selected files.
  • Exchange files thru internal Web service.
  • Compatible with AudioCopy / AudioPaste.
  • Supports iTunes file share.

Compatible:

iPad 2 and higher is recommended. Generally this application can be run with iPad 1 but there is possibility of dropping the signal out when playback, especially at frequencies above 44.1 kHz. Offline processing can be done with any iPads quite well.

Please note: This application is audio processing tool only. It does not have audio editor functions.

The app is priced at $9.99.

Grain Bastard – OP-1 first jam

Background video description:

I’ve just added a new instrument to my setup, the mighty OP-1 from Teenage Engineering :)

This is just my first test/jam from the device manually synced to my MD SPS-1 and Borderlands Granular on my iPad, so don’t expect too much – I haven’t done any vids for a while so I just quickly put this together. Beats from the MD, Synths from the OP-1 and droney glitchyness from Borderlands.

Please also have a look over at idmfnetlabel.bandcamp.com/album/va-sounds-for-skeletons-idmf039 for a free compilation album of electronic goodness, that I’ve managed to worm my way onto somehow. Please have a listen if you enjoy electronic music.

Peace

And while we are on the subject:

A video from Jacques Mongrel

First part in series, showing how I start writing a new song on the Teenage Engineering OP-1.

Visage returns to the stage

May 11, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Visage returns to the stage

New Romantic act Visage returns with a new album “Hearts And Knives” due for release in May 2013. The first single taken from the album will be “Shameless Fashion”.

The new material was written by Steve Strange, Robin Simon, Ben Woods, Nigel Summers, John Bryan, & Rich Mowatt.

It’s not the first time that Visage tries to launch a comeback but in the past Steve Strange’s weird and unpredictable behavior (thieving, being drunk onstage, miming and having his vocals sung by his backing vocalists) made sure that the project got back in the refrigerator over and over again despite the hard work of musicians who surrounded him.

Visage began in 1978 when Steve Strange and Blitz Club partner-in-crime Rusty Egan joined forces with Midge Ure to create a futuristic, synthesizer-led group where style and fashion were matched by experimental but accessible music. The group was soon augmented with members of Magazine and Billy Currie. They recorded their first single “Tar” with Martin Rushent at his Genetic Studio in 1978. Their breakthrough track “Fade To Grey” became a European hit and reached number 1 in 8 countries in 1980.

Quantum Live

quantum maps arbitrary note values to objects in juggling patterns. higher notes correspond to higher throws by default, but any value can be assigned. additionally, the program allows for a distinction between the left and right hands. note triggers are set to the peak of each object, rather than the traditional catching or throwing position. this produces unexpected rhythmic variations, and allows for chords to exist.
