Revolution-808 drum machine sample library
Sounds Outside the Lines has released Revolution-808, a drum machine sample library featuring the sounds of the Roland TR-808.
Although production of the TR-808 stopped in 1983, and only 12,000 were ever produced, by the time Hip-hop had reached popularity a few short years later the 808 – and especially it’s bass drum – became the defining sound of the genre.
The TR-808 is now considered to be the most recorded electronic drum machine of the last 30 years and is still used on countless songs and productions today. From classic R&B and Hip-Hop to Rock and Pop music the TR-808 has been used by artists ranging from Marvin Gaye and Tupac to Pink and Phoenix.
Revolution-808 features

Introduced in 1980 by a popular japanese manufacturer of electronic instruments, the TR-808 was one of the first fully programmable drum machines that featured a sequencer and completely analog generated sounds. Originally intended as a way for musicians to provide rhythm tracks to home demos, the TR-808 was far from the marketing success it was hope to be when launched. Due to it’s analog circuitry it couldn’t compete against the realism of digital drum machines of the time and was seen by many as inferior. Even by the standards of other now vintage drum machines the TR-808 contains no standard MIDI support and all programming had to be done with the internal 16-step sequencer. What was seen as a limitation in the early eighties is now thought of as the TR-808′s greatest strength. The fact that it is a fully analog drum machine means their is a character and depth to the sound which, unlike digital drum machines, evolves as the machine is played and has an unmistakable low end punch and snap

Review of Synth-Werk – Going Kraftwerk all the way, or…
We have had the pleasure of reviewing the recently released sampler studio called Synth-Werk from Best Service, powered by Yellow Tools’ Engine 2. The product was originally released under the name Kraftworker based on the clear fact that with this sample library you get basically all possible sounds inspired by this legendary band.
Our first impression, browsing through this 7,7Gb large sound library, is impressive. Every possible sound we are trying to think of, coming out of the old studio in Düseeldorf, is there in one form or another, everything neatly packed into its respective catalogues; i.e. FX, Bass synths, Vocoders, Lead sounds etc. Although with a slight overweight, in our opinion, on the more recent sounds pertaining to Kraftwerk’s latest release – the “Tour de France soundtrack”. Which in no sense is bad, since a lot of those nice metallic echo based sounds used on that album will easily fit any modern electro, EBM, synth pop, trance type tune.
The favorite section is probably the one containing bass synths since they faithfully reproduce several of those unique and groovy synth bass lines that has made the sound of Kraftwerk so characteristic. This especially true, for several of the sounds using arpeggiator or other types of sequenced rhythms. Forest Kingdom is also something that sounded completely amazing to us. If you compare it with TITAN which we would assume is one of Best Service’s top selling products, and somewhat marketed as a “Kraftwerk-sounding product”, we can easily say that Synth-Werk takes you 10 miles deeper into the realms of the Kling Klang studio. One possible down side is the way all these samples have been named. They are more or less all, in each catalogue, branded as Bass 1, Bass 2, Bass 3 etc, making it very difficult to track which tunes you wanted and, thus, making the built in search function pretty useless.
Synth-Werk comes bundled with Engine 2, a sampler instrument developed in cooperation with Yellow Tools, a product that can either be used as a VST or stand-alone instrument. The use of Engine 2 is something that has generated a lot of debate on various forums (like KVR for example) – stating that they would prefer a more general wav library so that they can use any program they like, e.g. Kontakt, and that they do not need yet another VST or that it makes their systems slow. We loaded Engine 2 onto a MacBook Pro and can at least from a performance perspective say that Engine 2 was easy to install and ran smoothly all through the trial period.

DJ Haus (one half of the Hot City outfit) drops a live “Unknown To The Unknown” label mix using the latest generation TRAKTOR DJ software with two TRAKTOR KONTROL X1 controllers and the new Sample Deck mapping and designated physical overlay. The overlay can be applied on top of the controller to re-label buttons and knobs to match the functionality of the Sample Deck mapping.
In this video, DJ Haus juggles eight Sample Deck slots of loops and clips, mixing and remixing tracks on the fly using the comprehensive control of the new mapping. The tailor-made visuals represent the individual sounds of the different loops loaded into the Sample Decks.

ARP Odyssey – new sample library for Kontakt 4
Binary Music has announced the release of ARP Odyssey, a new sample library for Kontakt 4.
Consisting of 101 patches made up of over 1,400 samples, this is a detailed representation of a classic analogue synthesizer. The patches cover a wide variety of sounds, including a selection from the original patch book and a set of multi-sampled patches where different filter settings are mapped to velocity.
There were three main versions of the Odyssey. The first white-faced models were manufactured from 1972, then the black and gold face from 1974.
The model that we’ve sampled is a black and orange faced 2821 from about 1979. This has the advantage of more stable oscillators – though nothing like the stability that we take for granted in modern gear. The Odyssey has attracted an eclectic mix of players: Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, George Duke, Portishead, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Ultravox, Gary Numan and Abba!
ARP Odyssey is available for download purchase now, priced at £12.00 (approx. $20 U.S.). There is also a free version with a small selection of patches.
