Korg Monotron Rack for Ableton Live
The Korg Monotron is a great little analog synth with a big, thick sound and amazing filter. However it is controlled not with keys, but a ribbon controller. I find it extremely difficult to play in pitch. So I’ve sampled it and racked it up in Ableton. Now notes are easy to hit, and there are also a few extra goodies not possible in the original. Follow along as I take you through it and download it yourself and enjoy!
**Non Live users: You can use the samples in your DAW of choice**

More information below:
For something about the size of a cassette tape, the Korg Monotron packs quite the punch. Don’t let that built in speaker fool you, plug this little guy into an amp and it can rattle the windows. The filter sounds great, and can even be used on external audio sources, very cool. The downside: I can’t play the thing in tune! Too bad it doesn’t have some cheap little buttons for keys instead of that ribbon keyboard. Hitting the exact pitch consistently, for me, seems to be out of the realm of possibilities. Thank goodness for samplers
This week, I have created a free Ableton Live Rack using samples from my Korg Monotron. Although some might argue that this rack lacks one of the most alluring qualities: the built in filter, it is now a much more playable synth, being that you can control it with a normal keyboard with actual keys. (Plus I think the filter in Ableton’s Sampler and Simpler are pretty nice substitutes). To take advantage of some of the possibilities offered to us in this computer age, I’ve done a few things the actual Monotron is incapable of. First, I layered a few Monotron samples to thicken out the sound. I’ve made it switchable from mono to polyphonic (Polytron?), Portamento and Glide are now options, you have control over Attack and Release, the Filter Envelope now has an attack you can play around with, and another macro knob allows you to select different combinations of samples. For the purists out there that don’t want layered samples, I’ve included an identical rack, with only one sample and a few different effect macros (chorus and delay.) For both racks, I have the mod wheel set to introduce some vibrato. So, watch along in the video and download it for yourself, it’s free and most importantly, from the heart. I think you’ll be pleased with just how much punch that little box can deliver. **Big thanks to Big C for giving me the Monotron for Christmas

Classic Roland drums processed with an Ensoniq DP/4
TR-SONIQ is a collection of classic Roland drums processed with an Ensoniq DP/4. Apart from the 318 WAV files there are ten ready to use kits for Fxpansion Geist and Guru, Native Instruments Maschine and Akai MPC.
Once upon a time, there was an innovative American company called Ensoniq that quickly gained a reputation with affordable samplers such as EPS and ARS. Ensoniq was a bit like that kid you were sitting next to in school who did everything in his own way. Not clean and stylish as the Akais or as sophisticated as the Emus. But that was a long time ago and since then Ensoniq got bought up by Emu, and Emu got bought up by Creative – who unfortunately haven’t done much real caring for either brand.
While many producers (mainly hiphop producers) still treasure their ASRs for their coloring of sound – our favorite feature of the EPS and ASR samplers is without a doubt its effects. The Ensoniq DP/4 is a dedicated effect with four separate effect units you can set up as four individual sound processors, or create series of complex chains.
Ensoniq meets Roland TR909, TR808 and TR606
TR-SONIQ is the result of combining the classic sounds from the well-known Roland drum machines TR909/808 (and also some from the underrated TR606) with the sonic capabilities of Ensoniq. It must be said that the Ensoniq effects were never subtle and with this collection of sounds we wanted to capture the spirit of Ensoniq. The dirt, the noise, the odd cut-offs, the distortion, the compression – the whole lot – all over the place.

1977: Sound of the oscillator from the Logan Melody 2
The String Melody is an Italian string synthesizer from Logan Electronics, first released in 1973. At first, success was lukewarm as Logan Electronics was relatively unknown. But in 1977 a slightly updated ‘mark II’ model was released and Logan Electronics began to see some commercial success from the sales of this instrument. As a result, almost all String Melodies floating around out there today are the ‘mark II’ version, as the original is quite rare. Also of note: outside of Italy, the String Melody was distributed by Hohner International, so you will find them labeled either the Hohner or Logan String Melody.
There are three basic sounds available: ‘Violin’, ‘Viola’ and ‘Cello’. These three sounds are actually all the same sound, just in three different octaves. The keyboard is permanently split in the middle, with the lower half called Bass and the upper called Treble. There are three drawbar volume sliders for each of the three sounds in the Bass region (the red sliders), and another three sliders for the three sounds in the Treble region (the blue sliders). This allows you to mix in as much of each sound in either section of the keyboard as you want for some really customized string combinations!
In this video:
This is the sound of the oscillator from the Logan Melody 2 string synth from 1977, sampled to worn tape on 60s valve equipment, and synthesized with software samplers such as kontakt or esx24.
The idea is to emulate the sound of the mellotron or birotron, but to take it to the next level by being able to synthesize within software.
I’ve found some amazing sounding oscillators ‘locked up’ in these old keyboards that offer little if no synthesis possibilities.

Transition X – free sample library
Transition FX Demo by Bronto Scorpio
Bronto Scorpio Music has released a free sample library, Transition FX;
Almost everyone needs them but there aren’t many good ones out there (at least not for free).
I’m talking about transition effects like “Boooooom”, “Whoooooosh” and “Tsssssssssh”.
Some time ago I thought I might just design some of these FX from scratch to share them with you.
After some days I came up with 33 samples. Some of them are simple and some of them are quite unique.
I’ve given my best to ensure the best possible quality and usefulness.
The sample library is a free download.
