A condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of a color. A sensation felt in one part of the body as a result of stimulus applied to another, as in referred pain. The description of one kind of sense impression by using words that normally describe another.
New iPad apps: Strange Attractor and Voco
Strange Attractor is a truly novel sound generator based on chaos theory. The outcome of PhD research, it uses a feedback system to process and generate sound. Unlike conventional synthesis techniques, sounds emerge in surprising and unexpected ways, almost having a life of their own. By moving your finger on the screen, you can navigate through a space of evolving sounds, that build-up, pulsate, and decay. Sound input through the microphone or headphone socket can be processed into fractal textures, or will trigger and control oscillations.
Voco is a touch controlled phase vocoder. Sounds can be manipulated by touching the screen, and played like like an instrument. Time is represented on the horizontal axis, and pitch on the vertical. The yellow bars display the sounds intensity. Sounds can be sampled through the microphone or headphone socket, or loaded via iTunes. There are also features to constrain the pitch to different scales, and to glide the playing point around the screen to make rhythmic loops.

Inside Synthesis – Introduction to Modular Synthesizers
Episode 3 from the original series – a very basic introduction to modular synthesizers.
Correction #1 – I refer to modulating the amplitude of an audio signal with another audio rate signal as Ring Modulation (RM). I should have said Amplitude Modulation (AM).
RM is certainly related to AM, but there’s a distinct difference. RM is implemented in such a way that the carrier and modulator’s frequencies are eliminated from the signal. You only hear the sums and difference frequencies of the carrier and modulator, but not the original carrier and modulator frequencies.
Interestingly enough, the AC-coupled circuitry that does RM is ring shaped.
Correction #2 – Neither RM nor AM add harmonic frequencies. They add sidebands of inharmonic frequencies – hence the metallic and dissonant sound.
Spectral Synthesis – Introduction and Approaches

Spectral modeling synthesis or simply SMS is an acoustic modeling approach for speech and other signals.
SMS considers sounds as a combination of harmonic content and noise content. Harmonic components are identified based on peaks in the frequency spectrum of the signal, normally as found by the short-time Fourier transform. The signal that remains following removal of the spectral components, sometimes referred to as the residual, is then modeled as white noise passed through a time-varying filter. The output of the model, then, are the frequencies and levels of the detected harmonic components and the coefficients of the time-varying filter.
Intuitively, the model can be applied to many types of audio signals. Speech signals, for example, include slowly-changing harmonic sounds caused by vibration of the vocal cords plus wideband, noise-like sounds caused by the lips and mouth. Musical instruments also produce sounds containing both harmonic componenents and percussive, noise-like sounds when the notes are struck or changed.
Inside Synthesis – FM Synthesis, Part 1
This is the original first installment of FM Synthesis. It presents a method of understanding FM for those who know subtractive synthesis.
In audio and music frequency modulation synthesis (or FM synthesis) is a form of audio synthesis where the timbre of a simple waveform is changed by frequency modulating it with a modulating frequency that is also in the audio range, resulting in a more complex waveform and a different-sounding tone. The frequency of an oscillator is altered or distorted, “in accordance with the amplitude of a modulating signal.”
For synthesizing harmonic sounds, the modulating signal must have a harmonic relationship to the original carrier signal. As the amount of frequency modulation increases, the sound grows progressively more complex. Through the use of modulators with frequencies that are non-integer multiples of the carrier signal (i.e. non harmonic), bell-like dissonant and percussive sounds can easily be created.
