technoBox adding features like dual 303s and drum machines
AudioRealism has announced technoBox2, the next version of technoBox adding many asked for features such as dual 303s and drum machines, export recordings of songs and SoundCloud integration.
A performance page has been added which allows access to the most commonly used controls on one page. The drum machines now allow you to load your own samples (via iTunes documents). technoBox2 runs on iPad and retina displays with crisp native resolution.
Featuring the same high quality audio engine as ABL2 which was painstakingly optimized to be able to run on mobile devices. For the uninitiated our audio engine has aliasing free oscillators and full range non-linear filters.
The drum section features 11 parts with 808 or 909 sounds (for a total of 22 sounds) with variable amount of shuffle per pattern, volume and decay per part. You can now load your own .wav and .aif samples into the drum machines via iTunes documents.
The newly redesigned FX panel now allows effects to be set on any or all of the four machines.
A performance page has been added which allows access to the most commonly used controls on one page.

The tsunami hit Japan today and we just want to let the world know that our thoughts are with you all. The impact of the earthquake (8.8 Richter) and the tsunami appears to be massive so based on this we saw it as important to show everyone how much we care.
Null Factor – “Red Shift”

Null Factor is a one-man project started by Dan Harvell from the remnants of the former industrial metal band Millennia. Dan Harvell now have a more electronic style with a lot of influences from various genres such as goth, rock and metal.

Koushion >> Gridsound – controller for iPad
Koushion (literally “grid sound” in Japanese) is a new kind of MIDI controller for your iPad. While it looks deceptively similar to a simple Tone Matrix, this is no toy. This video demonstration was completely improvised. The app will be available in the App Store on March 22.

The Haken Continuum – fingerboard improvisation
This is what I call a “SHOW & TELL” video. It’s the kind of video people make when they get a new musical instrument they haven’t the slightest idea how to play and they’re dying to show it off to the world even though it’s only been out of the box for five minutes!
This instrument is called the HAKEN CONTINUUM FINGERBOARD and it’s wonderful. In this video I am playing only one sound (a very “breathy” timbre that is somewhere between a clarinet and a Persian flute), and I am using only one voice (although it is a polyphonic instrument).
What distinguishes this instrument from other interfaces is that it is played in three dimensions: from left to right, forward & backward, and up & down. The hand of the player slides and dances on a smooth neoprene cushion constantly changing and “sculpting” the sound as it goes. Parameters can be altered to suit the musician, but in this video pitch is controlled by moving to the left and to the right like a standard keyboard, volume is controlled by pressure up and down on the neoprene surface, and timbre is controlled by movement of the hand forward and backward. A single hand can perform any or all of these movements at any given moment. This frees the other hand to play another keyboard (which is what I do in this video), or control some other device.
The continuum is limited only by your own musical imagination. What you see me do in this video is just one sound and one voice. It is infinitely more versatile than anything that could be shown in just a couple of minutes. Although the continuum is essentially a MIDI/CV controller interface, it has a large menu of its own sounds built into it. These sounds were prototyped by continuum virtuoso Edmund Eagan in Kyma, Symbolic Sound and the prototypes were then hand coded by Lippold Haken (the inventor of the instrument) for the fingerboard’s digital signal processor.
Yeah, I know, it all sounds terribly complicated, but it’s not. The instrument is very “friendly”, easy to understand and a lot of fun!

MS Paint Interpereted as audio data = Awesome music!
Background info on this pretty fascinating experiment:
Just made a really weird and awesome discovery.
If you import an EXE file into an audio program as audio data, you hear all kinds of cool stuff. The most awesome by far for me was MS Paint.
It’s probably one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard form something like this. All I did to the audio was master it slightly to make it sound less harsh to the ears, as well as remove a long section of noise.

This is the Windows 7 x64 edition of mspaint.exe. I used Adobe Audition to import and edit the audio, but one could jsut as easily use Audacity’s “import Raw Data” feature. I imported this as 8-bit, 22050hz stereo audio. I faded in the beginning, as well as removing a long section of noise part of the way through.
iElectribe gets refreshed – here’s what is new
Korg has updated iElectribe, its virtual drum machine for the iPad.
Here’s what’s new:
- iElectribe can now be played using external USB-MIDI devices
- An Auto Restore function has been added which enables the last edit status to be automatically restored
- A Backup function has been added that enables you to make backups of pattern data
- Now compatible with iOS 4.3
- A few minor bugs have also been addressed, improving operational stability
I haven’t had a chance to check out the new version of iElectribe, so I’m not clear on how extensive it’s MIDI support is.

ParamDrum TR Edition for Reaktor
ParamDrum is a fun and fast way to create unique sounding beats in Reaktor. It’s based on three granular samplers with built in parameter automation and variable length and speed step sequencers. The value of a step gives the probability that the step will trigger as the sequence plays, creating endless variations.
The third edition adds several carefully selected refinements.
- All recordable parameters are now mouse-automatable by clicking and dragging on the indicator, perfect for when you’re stuck with a laptop but no MIDI controller.
- The GUI now matches Frame, Loupe and Mirage with a clearer layout that is easier on the eyes.
- Smooth and swing are now static parameters, making room for envelope decay and sample start as recordable parameters. Try modulating sample start with a melodic sample to build the foundation of a track right in ParamDrum.
- A “Max Vel” switch for each sampler allows full velocity for each step, so step value affects only probability.
- A virtual analogue “sub” kick unit has been added for layering a little extra earthquake with your sampled kicks.
