Mark Mosher reviews the virtual Poly KB

April 12, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Mark Mosher reviews the virtual Poly KB

Our Colorado based friend Mark Mosher (Ableton guru) has posted a nice review of the Poly KB:

The video is intended to show what’s possible when you constrain your tool set and inspire others to extend their craft by “going deep” and transcending technology. Featured in this video is XILS PolyKBII which is a virtual analog modeled version which captures the sound and spirit of the legendary RSF PolyKobol Analog synthesizer. Unique features of this synth that make it great for one-patch-improvisations are the Dynamic stereo Modulation YX pad, Polyphonic Modulation YX pad, 8 part Polyphonic Sequencer with live recording, velocity editing, and continuously modulated waveforms (in an polyphonic analog model).

The Stradivarious of electronic instruments

April 11, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on The Stradivarious of electronic instruments

As this years Musikmesse has come to an end I’m reminded the endless stream of new instruments and synthesizers beeing released, software and hardware. If you are like me you have more instruments already available than you have time to learn how to use really good. But there are some that done the opposit and choosen one instrument and mastering it.

Charles Cohen is one of them. Thomas Lehn is another. Incedently both have choosen a small but modular analog synthesizers as their instrument of choise, Buchla Music Easel and EMS AKS.

Charles Cohen sais: “I’ve been playing the Buchla Music Easel since 1976. With its color-coded slide pots, its musically logical panel layout, and its almost sculptural patching system, I can comprehend the state of the instrument with a fleeting glance. The touch-sensitive, capacitance-activated keyboard responds smoothly at the speed of light to the slightest skin contact, and its assorted control voltage outputs can be directed to sonic and structural parameters very quickly. The potential to supplely flow into and amongst all the basic electronic sound forms is literally at my fingertips. I am happy when I’m playing this instrument”

Since 1994 Thomas Lehn’s main electronic equipment has been the Synthi A modular analogue synthesizer combined with the DK-2 keyboard, both developed and produced by the British company EMS in the late 1960’s.

Thomas Lehn’s electronic music is instrumentally live-performed. Musical material, process and structure are created and performed in real time.

DSI Prophet ’08 Module: Advanced Sequence

More info below:

DSI Prophet ’08 Module: Advanced Sequence
Audio & video by Arjen Schat

I bought the Prophet ’08 Module back in 2008 but never really used the internal step sequencer to its full potential. In this video I use three layered sequences which were all composed using the internal step sequencers. The first sequence modulates the pitch of oscillator 1 in layer A, the second sequence modulates the pitch of oscillator 2, also in layer A. The third sequence modulates the pitch of both oscillators in layer B.

I use key step triggers to trigger the different steps of the sequences and alternate between three different notes with yet another sequence coming from my DAW (Renoise). These notes transpose the pitch of the sequences at their respective steps and create intricate polyrhythms due to the different lenghts of the internal sequences and the key step trigger sequence from Renoise.
The notes in the trigger sequence are also transposed a few times to keep things sonically interesting.

The audio is routed through a Moog MF-104Z BBD delay, a Maxon AD999 BBD delay and T-Rex Room-mate reverb.
