We are proud to introduce the Stockholm Goes Alternative festival for the first time!
S.G.A is an out-door festival with camping that takes place between the 17th and 18th of June 2011. The precinct is located in Vallentuna some 4 miles outside Stockholm.
Kinect + Max/MSP + Arduino + Solenoids
At our last hacKinect Wednesdays gathering, we worked on the physical side of the installation. We bought a bunch of different types of solenoids (push, pull, big, small) to see how they work and which ones would suit best our installation.
We also wanted to see a prototype of the whole system in action. The system goes Kinect > KinectCoreVision > Max/MSP > Arduino > Solenoids.
We still have a long way to go, but it’s good to see the prototype in action.

Arturia’s hybrid drum machine
Bax reports on the Musikmesse 2011 in Frankfurt. Arturia announced early this year, the Spark drum machine. At Pro Light & Sound exhibition showed product manager Romain Dejoie Spark and explained the capabilities of the hybrid drum machine all are.

MidiMe Demo
This is a quick demo of the features of MidiMe, a new midi control app for the iPad. You can see here how the direct, record and bounce modes work and get a feel for the UI.
It connects over WiFi so no midi cables are required. It works directly with core midi in OS X and Windows users can connect via the free rtpMIDI driver.
Tracking Drones
The audio was created entirely with the SuONOIO, a Kalimba and an Ekdahl Moisturizer – the Eventide pedals gave the instruments a depth and quality I’ve only experienced with… well Eventide products. This video shows me adding the Ekdahl track to a session. The signal chain is Instrument – > Pitch Factor -> Time Factor -> Space. The video itself is a bit boring, so the best bet is to hit ‘play’, open a new window, and continue browsing…
Curious about what the Poly-Ana guys are up to
Well here are some new stuff they are planning to release within short:
From the site description on the Poly-Ana:
- I think, the Poly-Ana Controller for Admiral Quality VST Instruments will be the last Contoller this year. And it will be the „Flagship“ of my Controllers.The Controller has two Front Panels to control all the parameters of the VST Instrument. The upper and the lower Front Panel. The upper Front Panel contains the 3 Oscillators Section, the 2 Filter Section, the 2 LFO and 2 AMP Section.
The lower Front Panel contains on the left side, the 3 Envelopes, in the middle a 8“ Touchscreen and on the right side the 2 Modulation Mixer and the 2 Sample and Holds.
Also the Controller will have a 4 Octave Keyboard with Pitch and ModWheel. The Touchscreen which shows the VST Instrument is primarily use for switching, load and save the presets.
The controller will has about 226 Parameters. So i need 4 Midi Interfaces to control this Plugin.
Information from Admiral Quality Website on the Poly-Ana soft-synth:
- Poly-Ana is finally here! Get ready for a new experience in virtual analog synthesis! Poly-Ana uses a different approach than most other VA soft-synths which we feel delivers a sound more authentic to the early analog synths that inspired her features. This “brute-force” method admittedly requires more processing power than other common techniques, but is a far truer model of the functioning of real analog instruments. If you obsess over the quality of your sound like we do then you won’t mind using a bit more CPU power to help get you closer to that real analog sound; a sound that so many other VA synths fall too-far short of. (Note that Poly-Ana also offers a Quality option to reduce CPU usage during performance-time at the expense of sound quality.) Poly-Ana’s voice architecture is an ambitious combination of all the best features of the famous analog classics, plus a few new features (totaling 208 controls, plus a full 5 octave velocity sensitive virtual keyboard!) which, while possible back in the day, would have been prohibitively expensive to implement in hardware. But as a software-only product, Poly-Ana doesn’t face these limitations, and we held nothing back in designing our “ultimate analog dream synth”. Combine this with a classic styled design that puts every parameter a single click away, with large, easy to grab knobs and switches that behave like the real-world items; and with no hidden drill-down menus so that each and every control is prominently displayed out where you can see it; Poly-Ana offers a true alternative in software synthesis.

Altair-4 The SciFi Sounds Lab DemoVideo
Altair 4 – The SciFi Sounds Lab
is for spacey & wobbly stuff, drones and scapes i.e SciFi FX-sounds, and it is quite good at doing bell like sounds too.
The movie Forbidden Planet from 1956 being the first movie with a complete electronic soundtrack (by Louis and Bebe Barron) using sounds that could have been done with this plug.
“This instrument does do a lot of the things the Barron’s did with their circuitry albeit a lot easier”.
“It makes sciFi sounds & noises and everybody will reminiscent to a old soundlaboratory of the 50/60ties”.
Anyway Altair 4 puts it to a modern level.
Features:
- 2 oscillators with two soundsources with one (B) driving the other (A) to resonate; each oscillator with three mod inputs and extensive control options
- 3 LFO: L1 (7 waves) with key restart on first key pressed, L2 (8 waves) and phase modulation,- L3 (7 waves) with optional modulation by sub LFO;
- 2 hidden LFO: L12 = mix of L1 and L2, L13 = mix of L1 and L3;
- 1 Sample & Hold (6 modes);
- 1 VCA with AR EG (with pan for undelayed sound at Rev section);
- 1 Main Volume with level control: fixed, Velocity, and even Aftertouch, or Wheel;
- 1 Delay (bpm synced) and dedicated pan
- 1 Bass Boost
- 1 Reverb with predelay
- 1 Hold button to hold last played key
- 1 Joypad with 3 balls to control 6 destinations
Altair 4 will be available “soon” for 19 Euro, as introductionary offer until May, 15th 2011. The regular price will be 29 Euro. A demo version is now available.
