KORG Monotribe – more info has leaked…

April 5, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on KORG Monotribe – more info has leaked…

…about this analog beauty although they have taken down their site again :-)

The Monotribe looks to be a somewhat expanded Monotron (it adds selectable waveforms), as well as channels for “noise”, bass drum, snare drum, and highhats, all attached to a MIDI-syncable step sequencer.

Korg announced the product on its page today and judging by the pic above it looks great – an analogue little beast with what looks like a step sequencer and a similar ribbon style keypad to the Korg Monotron. Korg will be releasing a Wavedrum Mini Dynamic Percussion Synthesizer. There is not so much information posted about the device functions or specifications, but the most apparent new feature seems to be a clip on pick-up for triggering the Wavedrum Mini. The new Wavedrum also appears to have a built in speaker and some kind of presets or sequencing functions.

Packy Lundholm (lead guitarist for I Fight Dragons) plays Tetris in various locations around Chicago. Then things get a bit crazy.

Also his guitar is made from an actual Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

“As always, you can get a free song at www.ifightdragons.com/free!

And if you live in the Chicago area, come see us play live @ Lincoln Hall on Thursday, 3/31. It’s all ages, and we’ll definitely be using this guitar :)

Use Multi-Touch gestures to play pianos, organs, guitars, drums, and basses on your iPad. They sound and play like their counterparts, but let you do things you could never do on a real instrument.

Basic Assembly Audio Sequencer for SEGA Master System

A brief demo of an audio sequencer I’ve been working on for SEGA Master System. To be clear – you right the audio sequence in assembly code (see start of video) which is then compiled, and then the ROM file actually plays back the sequence. Just some fun for a Sunday evening :) http://little-scale.blogspot.com

Thor Filters, Shaper, Envelope, LFO, and Mod Matrix

April 4, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Thor Filters, Shaper, Envelope, LFO, and Mod Matrix

With a solid foundation of synth theory and even Thor’s fundamentals under your belt, this week we’ll be diving deeper into the filter types in Thor – looking at the State Variable Filter, the Comb Filter, and the Formant Filter. You’ll also learn about the self-oscillator included with some of these filters. From there we’ll move through Thor’s semi-modular signal path to see how you can tap into the sound-bending power of the shaper, the mod envelope, and the Modulation Matrix.

As with all of these Synth School videos, the knowledge in here builds heavily off of previous tutorials so if you’re jumping in to this one first I can highly recommend looking at past weeks to get a better understanding of the advanced concepts we’re covering here.

Also: Don’t forget to get your cap and gown measurements to the principle’s office because graduation from Synth School is next week!

Kequencer 2.0

April 4, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Kequencer 2.0

The original Kequencer got way more attention than I expected, so I’ve built another one and done a more comprehensive build report to make it easier for people to replicate. This time round I’ve taken a much cheaper and visually more interesting route, by doing away with the front panel altogether. (This build style was inspired by sndbyte’s amazing work.) I’ve also added a fine-control pot to each oscillator to making tuning a bit easier. I cleaned up the output section a bit with a LM386 amp set up in such a way that it plays nicely with the onboard speaker, external headphones, and line-out. I don’t think this is the best way of doing things but it works. The other big change is the addition of a LM317 adjustable voltage regulator, allowing you to drop the voltage from 7V all the way down to about 1.3V, when it sputters to a stop. In some settings, you can hear the regulator in action, vibrating the audio like an LFO.
