Nice little step sequencer with 8 steps and 8 mutable tracks

May 18, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Nice little step sequencer with 8 steps and 8 mutable tracks

Nice 8×8 matrix mixer/multiple for all kinds of duties: Mixing of course, it’s also great for gradual building up drones through muting/unmuting etc… Very versatile and sturdily built. If you use something like the Doepfer A-160/161 Clock Sequencer for the 8 inputs, you get a nice little step sequencer with 8 steps and 8 mutable tracks. Musically these sketches are embarrassingly outdated and 20 years too late, I know, but otoh, who cares. Take it as a bit of nostalgia :) This channel is not for my musical output anyway, Katavist’s videos should serve (ideally) only as a source of inspiration for *your* creativity with all this new modular stuff. Thank you for watching!

The Clavia Nord Modular G2 in action

May 18, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on The Clavia Nord Modular G2 in action

The Clavia is definitely a good synth. No doubt, computers have become a natural part of today’s music production. The process of editing sounds and sequences is so much easier from a computer screen. Still keyboard players have the need for portable instruments. Nord Modular G2 offers you the best of both worlds and provides an effective solution for the working musician. While remaining true to the traditional modular synthesis concept it manages to go where no modular synthesizer has ever gone before.

Download the free Richard Devine Modular G2 soundbank.

THE BEST OF TWO WORLDSThe G2 concept is based on a stand alone hardware keyboard with a freely configurable sound synthesis architecture and a software user interface (Editor) made for Mac OSX and PC. The sound engine in the G2 synthesizer runs on a group of digital signal processors (DSP’s), together with high resolution AD and DA converters. A G2 sound is named a Patch and is made with virtual modules and cables. Simply ‘drag & drop’ modules and cables directly on the computer screen to create your own G2 sounds. A Patch can be modeled after an existing synth or it can be the synthesizer of your dreams.THE MODULAR CONCEPTIt doesn’t matter whether you’re an 80’s retro fanatic or a producer of the most recent club music. With the G2 you can develop sounds similar to those created by old analog patch synthesizers or simulate acoustic instruments. You can also push yourself into a world of sounds that no single instrument has ever delivered before. While sample players remain cold as ice, the G2 modular architecture offers warmth and presence to your sound. Moreover, the average G2 patch uses about 3(!) kilobytes of memory, which makes sharing over the Internet a piece of cake. To get the feel of how it works, consider the way a guitarist connects his boxes and pedals. You build the sound piece by piece on the computer screen in a simple and intuitive way following your desired signal flow. Many of the G2 modules were also found in traditional analog synthesizers. Among the selection are well-known building blocks such as oscillators, filters, sequencers and envelope generators as well as more complex modules like vocoders, pitch tracker and the mystic Bode shifter. You can also build your own unique FX processors and run both internal and external signals through them. Future upgrades will be available for free from www.clavia.se. Combine all this editing power with a logical, user-friendly knob panel and you have the most flexible synthesizer ever seen – the Nord Modular G2!

How about making a virtual synth out of beer bottle samples?

May 18, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on How about making a virtual synth out of beer bottle samples?

AfroDjMac continues persistently to deliver new racks for Ableton, just as he has promised, and this week we are heading for beer. Here’s what he says about it. Ableton Live Instrument Rack created by blowing on a Red Stripe Lager bottle and sampling the tone. Effects are then layered, including a tremolo using Ableton’s Auto Pan effect.  I created a little beat and left you the stems, which I encourage you to remix. Send anything you make to afrodjmac.com or soundcloud.com/afrodjmac and I will post it.

Download the Live set here: http://bit.ly/freesynth8
it includes two versions, one with Sampler and one with Simpler.

Background info:

Sometime, about two thirds into a mid-winter “I wish I was on a tropical island” fantasy, the iPod shuffle Gods brought me The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil.”  As I found myself increasingly lost in the antics of Jagger, Richards and company, I realized that when I blew over the top of my frosty bottle of Red Stripe, the tone was perfectly in tune with the “whoo whooo’s”  that adorn most of the track.  As awesome as I thought this was, I couldn’t resist another cold taste, and justified it by figuring I would drink until I found an equally harmonious tone.  Soon thereafter the idea for this synth was born.

I have sampled a couple of tones from those very Red Stripe bottles, as well as others from a plastic water bottle.  These two slightly different tones are mixed together to create this weeks Free Weekly Ableton Live Rack.  From there, I added an Auto Filter with macro knobs to control the various parameters and LFOs; next I used Ableton’s Auto Pan to create a tremolo effect that is synced to the master tempo.  A delay set to repitch mode is followed to add some fun twisting effects, followed by an Erosion plug in to add some noise for character.  I especially like this particular synth for its tremolo effect, which is easily modulated thanks to the macro knob.

Check out the new single from Dabehavior called Silent dawn.

Daybehavior – Silent Dawn (Single Edit) by Stereoklang Produktion

Silent Dawn, taken from our forthcoming third album Follow that Car! which will be released later this summer.

Silent Dawn is a suggestive, dreamy pop song, slow but yet with a catchy chorus. It’s representative for our specific sound.
