The new VNV Nation album “Automatic” will be released in September. The album has been in production for a while now as many Side-Line readers know by now. But it’s official now, so no reason to fear for a delay. The band will be premiering some of the new songs at their show at the Nordstern Festival in Hamburg in July and snippets and previews will be posted online over the Summer.
The ‘Automatic’ tour 2011-2012 will kick off in September 6th in Germany. The special guest on the tour will be Straftanz. Says the band: “This is a band who put on a great live show and are the right kind of people to be stuck in a bus for 4 weeks with when you have a voucher for therapist sessions that you need to use.”

SONOIO featuring the Teenage Engineering synth in action
Teaser video of SONOIO’s new single called RED, and for synth fans you will see captures of the Teenage Engineering OP-1 synth in action.
Engineering’s OP-1 is something unique in music hardware. It’s got a form factor inspired by the Casio VL-Tone series – you know, those cute little 80s-vintage synths. It’s a sampler. It’s a synth. It has an FM radio. It will have a variety of sequencers. It has, we’ve just learned, a multi-track tape mode that lets you do beat-synced virtual splicing as a performance technique. It is expected to integrate and interoperate with a design lifestyle including, if you like, a luxury-priced, meticulously-machined desk lamp, and according to one rumor I heard, perhaps even a specially-designed electric bicycle. (Seriously.)
Clockwork Orchestra – Heaven Or Helsinki
Vintage gear processed with up to date software. Clockwork Orchestra is a quirky electronic band led by Irish oddball Mango. His songs sound something like broken toys, miserable old men, vintage children’s TV shows, rotting fish, burning plastic and digital clown nightmares. Since August 2010, Clockwork Orchestra have released a series of songs accompanied by animated videos created by a variety of artists and plan to release their debut album later in 2011.

Who would have guessed for a Dead Can Dance reunion?
I still know that I have a vinyl maxi-single with Dead Can Dance in my closet, but I also remember that they weren’t any favorites of mine, but times may have changed. It took them 7 years, but the band’s two core members Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard have now announced yet another reunion including a new album and tour.
The news was announced first by Perry on the forum of his website: “I have been talking with Lisa Gerrard this past week with regard to recording a new DCD album this coming winter. We hope to complete the album by the summer of 2012 and then embark on an extensive two month world tour in late 2012. I will be posting updates from time to time with regard to our progress and remember you heard it here first and yes it is official!”
The 13 gig tour Dead Can Dance did back in 2005 was recorded and sold afterwards through a special website as a 2CD-set. Per show only 500 copies were pressed which made these releases to be extremely rare. Each night the band also did approximately thirty minutes of brand new, never-heard material. It’s unclear whether these tracks are the ones used for the new album.

I have to admit, I never thought of this one — and it’s pretty, pretty slick. Instead of using time-coded vinyl to interface your turntable with your computer as with Final Scratch Pro or Serato Scratch, Nicholas J. Bryan’s Mopho DJ uses an iPhone.
A novel method of digital scratching is presented as an alternative to currently available digital hardware interfaces and time-coded vinyl (TCV). Similar to TCV, the proposed method leverages existing analog turntables as a physical interface to manipulate the playback of digital audio. To do so, however, an accelerometer/gyroscope–equipped smart phone is firmly attached to a modified record, placed on a turntable, and used to sense a performers movement, resulting in a wireless sensing-based scratching method. The accelerometer and gyroscope data is wirelessly transmitted to a computer to manipulate the digital audio playback in real-time. The method provides the benefit of digital audio and storage, requires minimal additional hardware, accommodates familiar proprioceptive feedback, and allows a single interface to control both digital and analog audio. In addition, the proposed method provides numerous additional benefits including real-time graphical display, multi-touch interaction, and untethered performance (e.g “air-scratching”). Such a method turns a vinyl record into an interactive surface and enhances traditional scratching performance, while affording new and creative musical interactions. Informal testing show this approach to be viable, responsive, and robust.

In the land of the pioneers – “Eko” from the past
Although described by the manufacturer as a “digital system”, it is an analogue synthesizer. The ‘digital’ refers to the type of circuitry employed i.e. silicon chips rather than transistors. This synthesizer is rare. It will be an excellent project for anyone who likes to get these ‘old dears’ back to how they were in the land of Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and Ultravox.

Or at least that is being claimed in this video, if you have more captures of this original synth make sure to drop as a line. The White Star 750 analog synthesizer was originally marketed by Carlsberg in 1969. It featured Twin Sub-Frequency Oscillators, Theramin Infinity Coil, Impasse Filters, and a 7 Phase Counter-Culture Pig Illuminator Switch.
Thelonius Bostik is blessed to own the world’s only surviving operational example.
In the accompanying film, Thelonius gets himself totally wasted before performing; it is the first time in almost four decades that the instrument has been heard publicly.
