Sounds From a Distant Outpost – free Ableton Live Pack
Mark Mosher of Modulate This! has released Sounds From a Distant Outpost, a free Ableton Live Pack.
Sounds From a Distant Outpost is more than a sample sound library. Over 30 hours in the making, it is a set of 12 deep and expressive instrument racks that will transport you to a dark and distant outpost. From here you will be able to explore the sounds, machines, and creatures of this world. These instruments will help spark your imagination and I hope inspire you to create your own soundtrack for this world. Of course, the instruments will also help add an interesting “edge” to any sound or music project.
The source audio is made up of some of my field recordings as well as original synthesized and re-synthesis harmonic content. The concept for the instruments was based on a back-story I created as the project progressed. Fueled by the story and setting, I translated these these source samples into Ableton Live racks and meticulously programmed them to create playable dynamic instruments which are placed under your command via macro parameters, velocity, after touch, and modulation wheel mappings. I’ve also provided the original source samples for the project so those who don’t have Ableton Live will be able to use these samples as oscillator sources in synths like Absynth, Alchemy, ElectraX and Blofeld.
Sounds From a Distant Outpost is available as a free download for Ableton Live 8 and Suite 8 (Intro not supported), and a pack of samples for use in your sampler of choice is available as well.

Novachord, MachineKits, Tubular Bells and more
Ableton has announced three new Partner Instruments to add for Live: Novachord, MachineKits plus Tubular Bells.
- Soniccouture Novachord – a collection of presets that is based on the faithfully sampled sounds of the Novachord – a gargantuan, tube-based, 72-note polyphonic synthesizer from 1938.
- Puremagnetik MachineKits – a high quality library of drum machines programmed specifically for Ableton Live.
- SonArte Tubular Bells, a collection of tubular bell presets meticulously sampled from a vintage instrument and transformed into ambient, rhythmic and synthetic sounds.

After crossing the 30 or so hour boundary on the Live Pack edition of the project I’ve been giving some thought as to how to handle other editions. I’ve gone WAY deeper than I imagined on the programming side and know that attempting to replicate the work on another synth would require I set aside a similar amount of time to do the work it justice in another format.
So, if you are following along, you know that Absynth won the reader’s poll. I’ve made the decision that I won’t re-programming the library on Absynth (at least right away). The good news is that instead I will release my original source audio samples licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.
The overall license for using the library for use in music and sound compositions will be “a non-exclusive royalty-free” by the way.
In the end, this means you’ll be able to use this source content in synths that support original samples as oscillator sources. Some that come to mind are Absynth, Alchemy, Blofled, ElectraX and so on.

Seeing the Slim Phatty retaining CV (control voltage) inputs I wondered how well line level voltage would work as a control source. The answer:
Pretty Damn Well!
This is a tutorial/demo on how I pulled this off and everything you need to know! The Moog (notes) are controlled via the MPK25 but the filter and pitch modulation is via the CV inputs.
Yes – Line level (analog) signal has voltage. I learned some of these tricks about a year ago – once thinking CV was far out and not so easy to gain control of – wrong.
The modulation of the SF can be controlled with amazing accuracy and synchronization using an application like Ableton. The possibilities are endless – I am still trying to understand where I would like to go with this idea. For now – you have the basic knowledge – please post back ideas and break throughs! Thx.
