Music from the brain – Epoc Neural Interface
The neural interface for sonifying my brainwaves is here, care of friends who brought it over to the UK. This way I was able to get the standard version (not sold abroad) and avoid the expensive developer licence (seeing as its now been hacked and Apps like MindYourOSC’s) are all I need.
Failing that I want to make a robot arm wired up to a 1971 Gibson Les Paul and shred classic metal licks to my brain’s content. When I’ve done that, discard my body and just put my disembodied brain in a jar attached to a Les Paul and maybe a Moog Voyager…
The Epoc Neural Interface is described as a “personal interface for human computer interaction” and retails for $299.

Cryoacoustic Orb
Cryoacoustic Orb is a sound installation involving multiple illuminated acrylic orbs filled with slowly melting ice. Hydrophones frozen inside the ice amplify the sounds of the melting process, which are electronically processed and spatialized throughout the darkened gallery space. The result is a unique ambient soundscape that evolves over the course of several hours.
Nice knobs – early arc experiment
a micro-looper.
eight samplers, corresponding to columns of the grid.
record by holding second-from-bottom key.
focus arc to column by pushing bottom key.
left knob is loop selection. turn to move selection, push-turn to resize selection.
right knob is volume. turning changes velocity, not position, so a tremelo effect is easily achieved. pushing down stops the spin, like a turntable.
third key up is mute/unmute. top rows transpose up/down by octaves. top rows meter sound levels.
Conductor – interactive instrument
Made a fast version for testing. Dark might work for night mode. Currently HTML5/Javascript. Hopefully iPad version later on.
A new piece in progress. Based on NYC subway system. Tentatively titled Conductor. It’s currently built in HTML5 Canvas + Javascript.

Experimental: Light sensing sequencer
A project I did for halfterms at HKU 15-12-2010
The entire project works with analog electronics. I used an overhead projector to project the images on an 3m x 1,50m screen. Behind the screen are 8 seperate piramids capturing the light and converting it into a pitch, the less light, the higher the pitch. The 8 step sequencer runs through the pattern and plays the corresponding pitch. I also added a filter and a control panel for the tempo, pitch and filtersettings.

Ambient Analogue 001 is the first release of an audiovisual experiment with footage of Chicago cut to an ambient music track of classic vintage and modern analogue synthesizers.

More crazy stuff – Sauerkraut Synthesizer
Gordon Monahan uses fruits, vegetables, and a jar of sauerkraut as voltage controllers for a software synthesizer built with ppooll-max/msp and an arduino interface. Performed live at the Subtle Technologies Festival, on board a cruise ship in Toronto Harbour, June 5, 2010.
The Sauerkraut Synthesizer is based on a technical prototype using lemons (The Lemon Synthesizer), developed as a collaboration between Gordon Monahan, Akemi Takeya, and Noid, in Vienna, March, 2009.
